A lot of people seem to have or perceive a pretty blem being "bored" in retirement. I don't understand this concept.
My wife kinda had same thing. When we moved for military assignments my wife would be without a job for a few months usually. She would complain about being "bored".
I can understand a little bit if your funds are lacking. but even then i can keep myself occupied easy. Go to the base gym for free. Watch a lot of TV or netflix. Go hiking. Internet. Etc.
heres my "dream": sleep in an extra hour or 2. take a bath for 30 mins. Go to gym for 2 hours (includes commute time). go back later again to gym for Pool / jacuzi. Re-watch great movies / tv shows. etc. etc.
i can also understand being bored if ur health is bad though.

I'm never bored. Although I prefer to work out outdoors and it's too bloody hot for anyone but a masochist to do it right now, I've never been bored since I retired.

I don't get the "i am bored" thing either. I have plenty of things to do. You are only bored if you choose to be bored.

As long as you are healthy, what you do in retirement is the life you always wanted. It is for me. I earnedit.

In my case I retired in good health. I was a runner and enjoyed that. I gardened. Within 2 years I developed back pain that took all physical activity away. It wasn't retirement but the unknown.

I've known a coule of people who were bored in retirement. One lady visted the workplace after she retired and complained about how bored she was and how she wished she hadn't retired.
Another started doing security guard work. He hated not having a job. I don't think money was the problem - he just needed something to do.
I think being bored in retirement happens to people who never had much in the way of interests outside of work.

My husband is still remodeling houses though he is finding it hard to have time with all the things he gets caught up in. The house he is working on should have been done months ago. I can't help like I used to.
I have been canning and caring for a garden, not sure if that can continue, getting old, feet and back problems finally catching up with me. The last 4 months I have slowed down.
But now grandson and DIL are here so we are super busy.
I've never had time to be bored, would love to get to sleep in more.
Tomorrow morning up early, going to a meeting with VA rep for MIL, we are her guardians and of course I'm stuck with paperwork for everything. Then home to another meeting with DD's state rep and have to go over paperwork for her music therapy. I have constant demands on my time. Have tons of paperwork to keep on top of. This is retirement?
I do think if you are strapped for money you are more likely to be bored too.
But I love to read so that is a pleasure I can now indulge.

I am bored, I have chores I could do but don't want to. I thrive on dead lines and now don't have any. I don't want to travel and don't have kids or grandkids. I haven't been well for months and just feeling better now but no motivation.
My brother is bored they take vacations but most time nothing to do. They go to casinos and dog parks nothing really fun.
My ISO fell on the stairs broke some bones in his hand and racked up his bad knee He can't even get in his boat, he can't ride his motorcycle.
Bored isn't so bad, peaceful, relaxing. Doing stuff is more fun with other people even going out to dinner alone is boring.

I'm sorry, I hate to hear that. Can you join some things or volunteer? I'm not much of a joiner but grew up alone, spent most of my adult life alone so doesn't really bother me much.
Oh sure there are days I want company, but with DH home I'm ok, would be lonely without him.
Ok, off to take care of business today, then have to run to the city.

Hubby and I are having the time of our lives with them.
I told hubs you are going to miss him when they leave, he said oh its only a 12 hour drive. I can see us up and down that road a bunch.
But its fun and different for us. I look at the little guy and remember his dad, they are so much alike.

I took early retirement, and have yet to be bored. I start my day bright and early at noon. Until then it is surfing and coffee time. Gotta give myself time to wake up. Once you get old, everything takes a little longer.

I'd be willing to try retirement right now to see if I'm bored.

I retired from full time work in 2000 and from part time work in 2009. Grandkids are grown now. I don't have time to get bored. There aren't enough hours in the day. Most mornings a neighbor and I walk our dogs 3-4 miles. After that, shower and lunch. Then maybe a nap. If it isn't too hot, I work in the garden. If it's too hot, I play on the computer. Then it's time for happy hour on the patio before dinner. After dinner, I relax while DH does the dishes...

I would *love* to have a chance to be "bored" in retirement. There's so much I want to do that working 40+ hours prevents (grow more food, save more kittens, read, knit, take classes, travel, do home improvements, and on and on and on . . . )
I truly believe that if the financial circumstances were right (they will be in a few more years) I could never work another day in my life and be perfectly happy.
However as always: YMMV

I am forever asking myself, "How on earth did I get anything done when I was working?" The truth is I was tired -a lot.

I got caught in the economic downturn and a major move in 2001 and forced into an early retirement. I was bored to tears ...... Having worked most of my adult life, not having a schedule was the worse. It got so bad we didn't know what day of the week it was. .......... Now we have a 'day of week' clock in the master bath.
Volunteer work filled part of my time but it wasn't enough. I worked one day a week at our community center, delivered meals one day a month, did the 'give a lift' program and drove various people where they needed to go.
Now I have a part-time, on call job and this is keeping me involved with life. I still deliver meals so that keeps me in the volunteer loop.
I'm 76 and I'll continue to contribute as long as I can.
I'm happy with part time retirement and part time working.

I have spots of boredom. With FB and this thread to chat on, helps. All of my activities stopped when I broke my wrist in June. I replaced exercise and tennis with reading and painting pictures between hand therapy exercises. Also TV. I can nap when I get bored. I belong to a ladies club with lots of activities. I limit what I sign up for because it's too easy to overdo the groups.
A good challenge is finding free activities. A friend has something almost everyday.

I always felt like people who were bored retired were bored while working. Some people are defined by their jobs/careers/profession so when retired they are lost. Retirement has nothing to do with it, that is just who they are in real life.
