Most Southerners and many Northerners consider Robert E. Lee to be one of the outstanding figures of the Civil War period. It may then come as a surprise to learn that Lee opposed erecting war memorials. (“A monumental challenge: What to do about statues of the heroes of Dixie — and defenders of slavery,” editorial, May 4) So insistent was Lee on extinguishing the fiery passions of the Civil War that he opposed erecting monuments on the war’s battlefields. “I think it wiser moreover not to keep open the sores of war, but to follow the examples of those nations who endeavored to obliterate the marks of civil strife and to commit to oblivion the feelings it engendered,” he wrote.Rather than raising battlefield memorials, he favored erasing battlefields from the landscape altogether, according to documents at the University of Virginia and the Library of Congress. www.latimes.com/opinion/readersreact/la-ol-le-robert-lee-confederate-civil-war-memorials-20170515-story.html

Very interesting steff. I didn't know that, thank you. And yes, I have long considered Robt. E Lee to be an honorable man, as well as a brilliant General. Had the North had a competent counter to him the war would have most probably ended far sooner, and with far less death and destruction. I also did not know he felt that way. It was a link within a link that I clicked on. I was surprised by it, but not surprised by it, if that makes sense. My mom & I were talking about Lee last night. He was very conflicted on becoming the head of the Confederate army. He was offered the head of the Union army first. He did a lot after the war to try and heal the South. He was a complicated & conflicted man. BUT, when it boils down to talking points, he was trying to destroy the country that George Washington helped create. Finding out how he felt about monuments just reinforced what I already thought about them coming down. Monuments to the soldiers that died is one thing, statues that are meant to honor rebellion leaders & were put up as a means of intimidation MUST come down. That's something else that I don't think people know. The majority of these statues went up well after the Civil War. They were done not to honor, but to intimidate.

We have a new DSM illness. Monument Dysphoria. Perhaps one can get SSDI for that so one has time to protest rather than work?

Isn't there one in every planned parenthood? I'm sure the republicans will gladly burn every one of those to the ground. History can go fuck itself if it is about birth control and women's health.

I'm really curious to see what state/city funded place has a portrait or statue of Sanger up as a memorial.
Anyone think Shooby will tell us where they are?

There is a bust of Margaret Sanger in one of the Smithsonian galleries. Yup, a museum, which is where Confederate monuments also belong.

There is a bust of Margaret Sanger in one of the Smithsonian galleries. Yup, a museum, which is where Confederate monuments also belong. and where many of these removed statues are going to end up. Which is why this idea of it rewriting/erasing history is false.

thehill.com/blogs/blog-briefing-room/news/346771-direct-descendant-of-robert-e-lee-denounces-white-nationalistsFrom the article: "There's no place for that hate," Robert E. Lee V, the general's great-great-grandson, told Newsweek in an interview. In an earlier written statement on Tuesday, Lee and his sister, Tracy Lee Crittenberger, condemned the white nationalist groups and said their Confederate ancestor would not have tolerated such behavior. "At the end of the Civil War, he implored the nation to come together to heal our wounds and to move forward to become a more unified nation," the statement reads. "He never would have tolerated the hateful words and violent actions of white supremacists, the KKK, or Neo Nazis." Lee told Newsweek that it would make "good sense" to move Confederate statues and monuments like the one in Charlottesville to museums, which would allow them to be put in historical context. And that's pretty much close to a mic drop on this subject.
