It sounds like those two were feuding for a long time.
So, taking that into account it was a really bad move to just sell (or give away) the car. I can't imagine that in a normal family dynamic that any of this would have ever gotten to this point. Even if the Dad had the gall to sell the car without warning, most sons wouldn't press felony charges, especially if Dad really did have most of the money stuck in it. They'd just be hurt/angry, but not at the police station filing charges.

I agree this seems to be a situation long in the making. Dad gives over the car in 2009 but the son is still keeping in Dad's garage in 2015. I think Dad was stupid and deserves to have some consequences happen because he felt he could do things illegally just because he had put so much money into the car. I wonder what steps he took to get his son to no longer store the car at his home and what other things were happening between them.
