My understanding is that the original name WAS Welsh Rabbit. I don't know why it was changed, but I'm wondering if the original name may have been because Wales (or Welsh) may have been considered lower class or lower quality than England (or at least by the English.) So of course (if that is true) Welsh Rabbit would not contain any rabbit or other meat. Just a guess.
