Here's a tale of Karma for you. I was good naturedly mocking these things and the people that use them during a staff meeting while cutting a bagel... Why yes I did slice my hand open, thank you for asking You need to nail the knife drawer shut then. Same here. Although I have been known to slice myself just trying to find the knife in the drawer. And I can guarantee that I will hurt myself during the nailing of the drawer as well. I like carpentry but sharp and blunt objects don't like me.

I do not need an incentive to give up avocado toast. I do not like avocado toast.
I like avocado.
I like toast.
I do not like them together.
Avocado is yummy just sliced with salt and pepper. Yum. Or with a little Italian dressing.
Now I want avocado.

We have avocado toast for dinner every month or so, at home. It is definitely above average for the cost of a homemade dinner. I put out prociutto, smoked salmon, blue cheese, avocado, cashews, dates, pears, cilantro, limes, etc. Oh...and 2 big baguettes. The cost of the avocado usually isn't the most painful factor. But, the meal for the 4 of us is probably 30 bucks, not 22 EACH. I so want to come to dinner at YOUR house!

So we're agreed that none of us needs to give up avocado toast to buy a house?
We just need to not spend $22 to get it out there in the world . . . .

Sounds good to me. Never had it and don't plan on it. I'm with dannylion on that particular combo. Books and magazines, on the other hand. There be my downfall. $100 a visit at the bookstore, and that's when I am restraining myself. And why I try to go only once a month.

My middle child is a young millenial. He does almost everything that ym would recommend. He and his wife have great jobs, low student loans, no debt, drive old cars (well he did just replace his 12 year old Kia since it didn't pass inspection and got a 3 year old Toyota). But homes in their area are over $1 million.
Their biggest hope is for him to get a different job in a lower COL area at somewhere near the same pay. That is his plan for the next year or so when he gets to 3 years in his job and his wife will have 2 years experience teaching.

Hey! Avocados are really (really, really, really) GOOD for you - so much better than any cr*ppy, crushed/heated/extruded/pesticide-laden/preservative-filled/HFCS-and-sugar-doused "breakfast cereal." So there!
Don't be hatin' on the avocado - it's not at fault. The fault lies with the hipster price tag. Just make it at home and save $22. Easy-peasy.

This is not the fault of the avocado. This is the fault of human beings.

Who in the hell pays $22 for avocados on toast? I literally just bought 3 avocados for $5 at Wegmans. I LOVE avocados but would not pay $22!

I can get a Dungeness crab omelette with herbed goat cheese and avocado along with coffee at the local breakfast place for $22. The omelette comes with homemade English muffins. I'd do that instead if I was going to pay that for a breakfast. However, when I get cheap avocados (and for us, that's usually about $1 each), I halve an avocado and fill the hole with roasted shrimp with a light dressing drizzled on top. I made a homemade Russian dressing last time, that was excellent. ETA: I am really missing the days where I could get 4 avocados/$1 when I lived in San Antonio......

I don't like avocados so this isn't an issue for me. I need to work on my addiction to high quality chocolate

The winters in Maryland are too cold for avocados.

The winters in Maryland are too cold for avocados. . . . . and lemons, and limes, and oranges, and grapefruits, and pomegranates, and guavas, and mangos . . . Yes, indeed, too cold for all those lovely things, too, but they tend to be more reasonably priced in the grocery stores. Of course, there is nothing like the scent of citrus blossoms, so I do miss that.
I have a special fondness for avocado trees. They make wonderful shade trees, and mature avocado trees are the best climbing trees with big, sturdy branches and smooth bark. The climbing aspect is really just nostalgia as there are few, if any rhinoceroses at large in Maryland and bears seldom venture into my neighborhood, so the likelihood of being chased up a tree is, fortunately, very small. I do, however, miss having ready access to all the avocados I could want just by stepping outside.

I have only eaten avocado as guacamole. The idea of avocado and tomato sandwich sounds good though. What would you put on it? Salad dressing maybe?

I have only eaten avocado as guacamole. The idea of avocado and tomato sandwich sounds good though. What would you put on it? Salad dressing maybe? What do you mean by "put on it"? Some kind of dressing? The avocado is so rich and buttery you don't need to put any kind of dressing on it (sez me, YMMV). That's kinda the point of 'avocado toast': you toast or grill a piece of really good quality, thickly sliced rustic bread, schmear it with smashed avocado and top it with whatever other extra goodies you like. It's supposed to be a toasted, open-face work of foodie art, not a traditional two-pieces-of-bread American sandwich.
Try avocado toast with: bacon; any thin sliced deli meat (Italian meats like prosciutto, salami, mortadella and capicola are wonderful); turkey, tuna or chicken salad; thinly sliced tomatoes, radishes, cucumbers, bell peppers, carrots, green onions, pickled red onion, mild pickled peppers (like the green Italian or Greek pepperoncini); sprouts like radish, sunflower, broccoli; soft, crumbly or fresh cheeses like ricotta, burrata, blue cheese, mascarpone; sweets like dried fruits or jams/marmalades; toasted nuts like pine, almond, pistachio, walnut; fried egg.
The possibilities are almost endless

I don't care for avocado toast, but I like naan with hummus and a slice of avocado. Triscuits (preferably the flavored ones) with hummus and avocado is good, too. Put some bacon on either of those and you have ambrosia.

Sounds good to me. Never had it and don't plan on it. I'm with dannylion on that particular combo. Books and magazines, on the other hand. There be my downfall. $100 a visit at the bookstore, and that's when I am restraining myself. And why I try to go only once a month. This is why you get the Kindle app on your phone/laptop, and then pay the fee for Kindle unlimited. The ability to download books every month keeps me from needing to go to the bookstore, because I will drop $100 if I walk in the door. B&N figured out the smell of fresh brewed coffee and new books is an aphrodisiac that makes people lose all financial restraint.

I love avocados; usually I slice them and add a drizzle of lime or lemon juice, and Kittensaver is correct they are very creamy and need little adornment.
