Hey! Avocados are really (really, really, really) GOOD for you - so much better than any cr*ppy, crushed/heated/extruded/pesticide-laden/preservative-filled/HFCS-and-sugar-doused "breakfast cereal." So there!
Don't be hatin' on the avocado - it's not at fault. The fault lies with the hipster price tag. Just make it at home and save $22. Easy-peasy.

Read the article and now am craving smashed avocado with crumbled feta on five grain toast. Yum yum. It's awesome. We have it at least a couple of mornings per week. OTOH we live in avocado country, so we're not stuck paying $8 or $9 per each. I usually get them from a friend's tree (when in season) and from the Farmer's Market when the tree is done for the year.

Oh, I love avocado toast! Though I've not made it with bacon, so thanks for putting that in my head now too!!! I'm usually content with just avocado, tomato, salt and pepper. But now, I need the bacon!

I miss living in south florida, people were always bringing avocados to work from their trees. Or selling them at street corners for cheap. But where I am they aren;t at all unreasonable. Just not free!

Yeah avocados don't cost that much here. But if you want to buy a house cutting back on eating out might get you there faster. Depends on your spending.

I paid .50 cents for avocados the other day. They were really good. Cookies Galore my son is going to Kodiak in July so I will be knee deep in good salmon/halibut and some yellow fish (can't remember the name). I just put in my order when I want some smoked salmon.

Between DVD and VHS I've got at least a couple thousand, including many of the greatest movies of all time. I do have other spoof comedies though, but Cannibal Women should be a classic! And it is Bill Maher back when he was just an actor and comic.

Well I just read an article about all the injuries caused by people hurting themselves while trying to cut open and remove the pit from avocados. So the avocado may only be 50 cents but the ER trip costs could add up. www.cbsnews.com/news/avocado-hand-injuries-on-the-rise/For the record, I love avocados and have never injured myself

I am downright dangerous in the kitchen but I have never hurt myself cutting open an avocado.
And I still can't to this day figure out why the chefs on food/cooking shows make such a big deal out of how to get the pit out of the avocado. Like I said, I'm dumb as a red brick in the kitchen but I figured that out long ago with no help from talking chef heads!!!

I think the writer has good point just not ones that the people he is talking about care about. Of course if you are saving up for something, or just don't make a lot of money and need to economize, $22 for a sandwich or $4 for a coffee is a lot. But the article said that the people he was talking about didn't put a lot of emphasis on "things" like houses or cars. they put more emphasis on experiences and eating out. His point was really that they should do things like buy a house so they can build wealth not just for a place to sleep and put their stuff. And since people who own homes are generally wealthier, in the long run they would get to eat more $22 sandwiches presumably.

I don't do the " hit the pit with a sharp knife and pull it out" maneuver. I just use a teaspoon and scoop out the pit. It is easy and safe, but doesn't look. As cool as the TV chefs.

When I think back to my 20's and the 'possessions' I accumulated, they are things like: a TV, a stereo, with speakers and a CD player, CDs to play on that stereo, a DVD player and maybe some DVDs, a video game console and games for it, later a computer, a printer, etc. Now all of that is in your phone, in your pocket, from the time you are 12 (or 6 or 17 - depending on the kid.) And since that 2008 fiasco, real estate is no longer seen as a sure fire winner. Many on this board have said that owning your own home is a wash after you pay maintenance and taxes and inaurance and everything. 'Rent and save the difference' may have its merits. Depends on the math and the situation. Maybe in the future home ownership won't necessarily be a pillar of the American dream. I could see many "millionaires" feeling uneasy about that.
That said, if you are spending a significant amount of your income on restaurant food, you aren't likely to grow wealth in any way.

I think they feel that it wasn't the method (100% financing) or the stretching (total cost of house 5 or 6 times their income) or being unprepared financially (no EF and big CC bills) that was the problem(s) that caused their house buying experience to be so horrible it was owning/buying the house. That said, if you are spending a significant amount of your income on restaurant food, you aren't likely to grow wealth in any way. I know some millennials who DID get burned by the Real Estate crash - they listened to the then prevalent "superhype" about how buying a "home" was the way to go - even if it meant stretching ALOT and putting no money down. They are VERY leery of buying a "home" again. Renting seems "safer". And, more importantly I think renting lets them spend less time thinking about where they live (they don't bother with constant upkeep and maintenance - why clean if in a year or two you will move and start over with someplace clean?) Renting also gives them an "experience" - they can redecorate every few years, they can buy new furniture (in the latest trend), they can live in the "latest trend" place. When you buy a house - you loose out on a lot of those things OR you have the big expense of the house and then incur more big expenses every time you redecorator or update to keep up with the trends. SOME of the millienials in my life - are very much swayed by "pop culture" AND what their friends are doing (following "pop culture").... While I do agree the restaurant food/bar hopping can be a huge financial drain - it's also a "lifestyle" -- their friends are doing it too.

I sold my car to qualify for the loan for our first house. DH and I then survived a year with only one car, the car we then acquired was a Plymouth Horizon I inherited from my Grandmother. I drove that little car for nearly a year before we bought a different car.
When we decided we wanted to buy our second house we held off on buying a newer car to make it easier to qualify for the mortgage. We had sold a rental property and I had about $60,000 in the bank, but only told the real estate agent we had about $40,000 to put down. I now think that was a mistake, but que sera.
We have a very nice house, but it is not at the top of what we can afford for our income. I am trying to pay down all our debt so that by the time we are retirement age, everything is paid off. DH wanted a new truck, we thought our truck was dead, but he called a mechanic he knows and they towed it to the shop and replaced the water pump. Hopefully that will buy us at least a year - that will get us to the point of having my car and DH's car paid off.
DD has a 20 year old friend that just bought herself a new Car - it was at least $25,000. DD says she works about 60 hours a week and she is not in school right now. Hopefully some young people will listen to him, I hope my own kids pay attention to this kind of advice, but I sometimes think DD knows what the conventional advice is, but doesn't follow it.

Home ownership isn't for everyone. Maybe some people prefer to spend their money going to Europe every summer rather than on a house. The American Dream has been evolving over time. I am just now getting to the point to where I might want to purchase a home. The reason being is that I can now afford to buy a home AND take vacations, eat out, save for retirement, etc. For me personally, owning a home just was never that big of a deal. If the choice was to live like a poor college student and own a home, then I chose to not own a home. Now that my financial situation is allowing me to own something AND provide me with my wants I am looking into purchasing something next year. I am also a SINK so would probably feel differently if I had a family. If I had kids I would want a home with a yard, etc. People have different priorities at different times in their lives.

Everyone just makes their own toast as they have time. My son will usually have dinner twice - once before and once after practice. He puts more meat and such on his first round, but more fruit on his last round - so it is like a dessert. It is quick and easy and a breeze to clean up. When we run out of bread we just smear cheese or avocado on the pears with cilantro and lime - surprisingly works together extremely well.

Here's a tale of Karma for you. I was good naturedly mocking these things and the people that use them during a staff meeting while cutting a bagel... Why yes I did slice my hand open, thank you for asking You need to nail the knife drawer shut then.
