Just saw this drone footage of our state hwy department clearing snow through Yosemite. I actually camped in one of the meadows last fall on my big hike.
Hwy 120 is the road from Yosemite to Mono Lake. The pass gets up to 9,000' and crosses from the west side of the Sierras to the east where it meets 395. The road is typically closed from October 15 through May 15th.
The snow melt this year is going to be AWESOME!

I was up in the Cave Creek area last week; hiked Elephant Butte in Spur Cross on Wednesday morning and it was getting pretty toasty by the time we finished at 10am. Glad we started at 6:30!

No, we already had 108 about 10 days ago followed by a few nice days of 80s. But in a couple weeks we'll be starting 100 days of 100+ degrees. That's when we go on 'Daylight Avoidance Time' - get in the house by noon and stay there until after supper, lol.

I'm currently at my mom's condo at La Jolla Shores. Feel sorry for me!

The DOT has already informed the press that one of the passes over the Cascades they don't anticipate being open until the end of June. Normally, this pass gets opened up in April. I'm guessing that it is going to be well into Aug. before they get the road opened to Artist's Point (normally, it opens in July). Last month, the DOT went up to see what the status of the last 2.7 miles is, and found over 500 inches of snow.

Global Cooling!
I attended DS college graduation last Friday. It was outdoors in the evening. It was cold! I had to borrow a sweatshirt from him because I was not prepared for cold evening in May. He graduated from the rival of my alma mater, so of course he gave me one of this college sweatshirts to wear. There were no pictures taken of me in the sweatshirt!

Lol, I'm in San Diego working on my mom's condo. We had a rainstorm over the weekend and I didn't have any kind of rain gear. DH is up at the cabin about 100 miles away and they got 3" of snow. Very, very unusual weather for CA in May. Our rainy season usually ends early April and doesn't start up again until late October/early November.

www.sfgate.com/news/article/Tioga-Monitor-Sonora-Ebbetts-Pass-open-Sierra-snow-11138676.php Could be one of those years my old boss talked about, when Tioga opens after the Fourth of July. Here, a couple of hours north of Tioga, we've had over 60 feet of snow at 9,000 feet. And it's not done yet. Had snow down to 6,000 feet last week and snow accumulations are forecasted for down to 4,500 feet during the next week. Kind of funny to see the irrigation system running during a snow squall. There is some talk that snow will remain on the ground in some spots until spring next year. Squaw Valley ski area is planning to be open weekends yet, after July 4th for as long as the snow holds out.

I thought based on the pix they might have it open during the normal season but right now the Yosemite road conditions page is stating that in snow years like this the road hasn't opened until June or July.
That's definitely going to upset some people and make a mess of the Valley.
Glad my first high country hike isn't going to be until August. And not in Yosemite.

Did you read where the global seed bank in Norway got flooded? There has been so much ice melt way beyond anticipation that water was pouring down at the entrance. It then refroze and they had to chisel their way in.
They have now added pumps so it won't flood. So far nothing damaged but they had no idea that would happen. Looks like they are taking precautions to further protect it.
