The official also rejected security concerns about allowing Russian officials into the Oval Office, including Kislyak, who is widely considered to be a spy by US intelligence officials. "What are we supposed to do?" the official asked. "Not meet with the Russians?"
um....yeah.....that might be a really good idea for the time being.

I keep thinking trump cannot lower the bar of common sense any more than he already has. But he keeps on surprising me by going even lower.

I am as well. And while that is horrible, the more depressing time is soon to come - when I am no longer surprised or shocked.

I was shocked to find out the US press was barred from Trump's meeting with Russian officials but the Russian press was allowed to attend. WTF?

Did they really think that the Russians wouldn't publish the meeting?

Most (if not all) of the pictures being seen on the internet are from the Russian press contingent. That just frosts my arse. There's no excuse for that.

Dunno, but this has resulted in a lot of consternation among plebes like you and I and even some GOP members of Congress. What with everything else going on right now, it's starting to look like pure chaos reigns.

Has anyone seen questions being raised about why the American press was barred and the Russian press was allowed?

Has anyone seen questions being raised about why the American press was barred and the Russian press was allowed? Some of the American press was invited, per the New York Post: "Among the slew of outlets barred from the invitation-only gaggle were news organizations that President Trump has singled out for criticism, including CNN and the New York Times. The Hill, Politico, BuzzFeed, the Daily Mail, the BBC, the LA Times and the New York Daily News also were kept away. Time magazine and the Associated Press stayed away in a show of solidarity. The major networks — Fox, CBS, ABC and NBC — were invited, as were several outlets that cater to a conservative audience, such as Breitbart, the Washington Times and One America News Network. The White House invited the regular media “pool” — which on Friday consisted of Hearst Newspapers and CBS — as well as the other outlets into Spicer’s office, while barring the rest." Link to Article

Unfortunately the NY Post is a tabloid rated as the least credible publication in NY Here's what the NY Times had to say: "When President Trump met with top Russian officials in the Oval Office on Wednesday, White House officials barred reporters from witnessing the moment. They apparently preferred to block coverage of the awkwardly timed visit as questions swirled about whether the president had dismissed his F.B.I. director in part to squelch the investigation into possible ties between his campaign and Moscow. But the Russians, who have a largely state-run media, brought their own press contingent in the form of an official photographer. They quickly filled the vacuum with their own pictures of the meeting with Mr. Trump, Sergey V. Lavrov, the Russian foreign minister, and Sergey I. Kislyak, Moscow’s ambassador to the United States. Within minutes of the meeting, the Foreign Ministry had posted photographs on Twitter of Mr. Trump and Mr. Lavrov smiling and shaking hands. The Russian embassy posted images of the president grinning and gripping hands with the ambassador. Tass, Russia’s official news agency, released more photographs of the three men laughing together in the Oval Office. The White House released nothing. <snip> Mr. Trump’s session with Mr. Lavrov was listed on his schedule as “Closed Press,” meaning the news media would not have a chance to photograph or otherwise document the meeting. “Our official photographer and their official photographer were present — that’s it,” a White House aide said, speaking on condition of anonymity, lacking authorization to describe the ground rules." www.nytimes.com/2017/05/10/us/politics/trump-russia-meeting-american-reporters-blocked.html?_r=0

More about the meeting with the Russians (from the above link)
"Former White House officials were left to wonder about the security implications of having allowed a Russian photographer unfettered access to the American president’s office.
Colin H. Kahl, the former national security adviser to Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr., took to Twitter to pose what he called a “deadly serious” question: “Was it a good idea to let a Russian gov photographer & all their equipment into the Oval Office?”
David S. Cohen, the former deputy director of the C.I.A. during the Obama administration, responded: “No, it was not.”"
Wonder if they swept the Oval Office for bugs afterwards.... Security doesn't seem to be a big issue with this mis-administration.

let's use an example of an illicit affair. you are sleeping with some stranger that is not your spouse. your spouse discovers this, and it becomes a public matter. is the first question that crosses your mind: "what am i supposed to do? stop sleeping with him/her"? this administration regularly crosses over the line from incompetent to utterly bizarre.

He is now down to 35% in approval ratings- one thing he does (seriously) look at. He has a disapproval rating in the high 50's. For the first time his strongest voting block- uneducated white males- have turned, a higher percentage disapproving than approving. Even Bubba and his other brother Bubba have figured it out. Now all they have to do is convince Cousin Bubba..... Congress people look at these things too. If he doesn't turn that around he will be very lonely in DC as re-election season looms. he is going to get crushed under the weight of his own hubris, imo. but who cares, right? my opinion means nothing, as Paul loves to point out.

Was this some kind of secret meeting? Because I swear I read about it before it happened. Maybe I'm thinking of something else.

The staff photographer was there, and the Russian government photographer was there, but that is the Russian press. If the administration didn't realize that, they are brain dead.

That's kind of my thought. I don't see why anybody is "upset" over the pictures. The meeting was no secret. Photographers were there and allowed to take photographs. It shouldn't be shocking or upsetting those photos were published. I can't figure out why the White House is "surprised" or feel they have been "tricked". I have to be missing something, as usual.

I can't even see the upset about meeting in the Oval Office. Even our President wouldn't leave his plans to blow up North Korea laying on a table by the couch.

My guess is Trump & Co were thinking that by only allowing those they "approved" in the meeting that they would be able to control the flow of information. Russian press either didn't want to play the game or wasn't in on the game. It seems to come as a constant surprise to the adminsitration that not everyone wants to play Trump's game, they may have their own games to play.

He held a sensitive meeting about North Korea in public view with passersby snapping photos with their cellphones. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has been characterized by the CIA has characterized as a "spy". This is the same man who compromised Michael Flynn, has had private meetings with Flynn, Trump's son in law Jared Kushner, Carter Page, Paul Manafort, Attorney General Jeff Sessions amongst others—all of whom later lied about it (Sessions was under oath at the time). The main question about this particular meeting is why was the American press barred when the Russian press was allowed in?You have an answer?

Honestly, because I bet that Trump was too stupid to realize that the Russian government photographer was the Russian press. I suspect he thought he was barring all press, but he'd have the official white house photographer and let Russia have their equivalent. Our president isn't the and the people he surrounds him with aren't the sharpest knifes in the draw when it comes to these sorts of things. This is the same guy who couldn't work out why people were upset that was busy talking about a response to Syria over dinner.

Was the American press "barred" or was it just that select news agencies didn't receive an invitation?

Oh of course you know all security plans were in place, he probably had all kinds of privileged info lying around, the idiot. But then he uses friends and news to get his security briefings!!
