My biggest problem with building the wall is that I think it will be ineffective. Where a wall is effective, they already have one. Most of the border agents will tell you that smugglers are just getting creative to get past the wall. To me it seems like a publicity stunt to fool people who don't know anything. The money would be better spent in other areas that are more nimble. I found this article about using digital technology to improve monitoring interesting. It seems like this is a better alternative to the more deserted areas (as opposed to building a road big enough to get construction equipment right to the Mexico border, which can be used later by smugglers.) fronterasdesk.org/content/10644/borders-new-boundaries-digital-towers

IMO Trump is trying to save face. He never admits to being wrong. There was never going to be a wall paid for by Mexico. Trump supporters believed him. Now he has to wiggle out of it. He can blame the dems and fake media. Maybe the Trump foundation will pay for it?

That's because the wall we have isn't big enough or awesome enough! Once Trump builds his wall they will be so intimated they will give up and go home.

But he is still pushing to put it in the budget.
I don't care - blame the Democrats and save face.

I saw a meme that suggested that Trump simply say the wall was built, even though it wasn't. His supporters would believe it, and US will save $21Billion.

A wall is very impractical and everyone knows it. Trump has a huge ego problem ........ and animal migration is also huge.
That being said ......... we can't have open borders. If everyone would play nice we wouldn't be having these discussions ....... but there are a lot of people who have addled brain cells and have no desire to play nice.
What is the answer? I don't know, I'm the proverbial buck passer.
I see the future of the world being controlled by drugs ...... and all of the infighting of the cartels. It will be the second generation after the people say 'enough' and put a stop to it.

Sundar Pichai, Google CEO, and the Trump White House announced today an agreement to create the appearance of a wall existing on the entire length of the U.S. and Mexican border on the popular web site, Google Maps. Although the financial details were not released, the agreement is thought to offer billions in savings for American tax payers. http:/www.businessinsider.com/ceo-sundar-pichai-tump-agreement-wall-google-maps

It's more effective to deny illegals any and all benefits even if they drop an anchor baby here on US soil. No education, no welfare of any sort, show up in the ER? Stabilized per our stupid laws then deported. Anyone hiring illegals? Jail and fines. No slap on wrist. Cheaper than a wall. Stop the bi-lingual signs and ESOL in schools. No drivers licenses and no ID unless you have an up to date green card.

As to the wall, it's just a waste of money and resources and has the potential to bring about unwanted problems, both economic and ecological. Boats can go around it. Airplanes can go over it. People with shovels can go under it. MOO

There is nothing impractical about a wall. Of course not. Where else would I hang pictures of my DGS. But there is plenty impractical about a wall as a device to keep people out of a country. The Great Wall of China, Hadrian's Wall, and the Maginot line (though admittedly that was not a wall in the true sense of the word) are examples of their ineffectiveness.
As for Mexico paying for it? In a pig's eye. Not going to happen and after all the "we need to reduce debt" rethoric from certain conservatives on these boards I would expect something better than a defense that is the equivalent of "waaah, waaah, waaah".
Reduce debt or at the very least come up with a plan to pay for this shitty idea other than taking the money out of our tax money.

And with the drones that you can now buy just about anywhere, human smugglers would be able to keep track of the BP and get out of the way as soon as they are coming.

Ladders that could be manufactured in the US. Drones manufactured in the US and piloted by us. Stopping Trump products from entering the US . Remember made in America by Americans. Let the hypocrite president lead by example.

OK, so let's forget the wall for a minute.
YM is so good at citing all other greatness of all countries of the world - their health care, their maternity benefits, their education system.
So, how do all those brilliant nations protect their boarders against illegal immigration? Let's just do what they do! Whatever that is.....

They make sure those that are there leave, they do not allow them to overstay their visas. They also don't issue ID's or give government assistance to illegals. In the US, the "penalty" for being here illegally is usually: Free healthcare, government support, government issued ID's, a job (or 2, or 3), and being able to be offended if business you want to frequent won't learn YOUR language. If we can stop that, the "illegals" problem will take care of itself.

The concept of a wall is, at best, a oversimplication.
I think it's important to secure the boarder, but even a casual observer like me knows that security is more than just physical security. There are also other factors to consider.
In some places, a wall may be needed, in others, sensors that alert boarder agents of a crossing, satellites that identify drug and human trafficking routes that can be staked out. There are different solutions to providing security for the boarder and they'll vary depending on the location.
Regarding the illegal immigrants already here, a wall or no wall won't affect them. More ICE agents and administrative judges are needed to speed up the deportation process.
But there's no realistic way to find and deport all of the illegals, so I think it's extremely important we start making it a crime with serious consequences to knowingly employ a illegal immigrant. It's also important to deny them any other public benefits, such as driver's licenses and ID's. Once they can't get a job, ID, or other public services, they'll leave for their country of origin.

I think if you are really serious about getting rid of illegals, you need more than border security. The biggest problem is that employers employ them. Government is not the big problem, its some employers. And those employers need to be punished because if there was no way to earn income, illegals would not be coming here to stay.

Totally agree, but Trump supporters like simple, easy to understand solutions. Just tell them it's complete and it's awesome. They'll believe anything.
