House Intelligence Chairman Devin Nunes said Wednesday that the U.S. intelligence community collected multiple conversations involving members of Donald Trump’s transition team after he won the election last year.

After making his disclosure at the Capitol, Nunes headed to the White House to brief the president on what he had learned. Trump then told reporters gathered for an unrelated event that “I somewhat do” feel vindicated by the latest development. “I very much appreciate the fact that they found what they found.”

Nunes said that intercepts he’s seen appear to be legal and weren’t targeted at Trump’s transition team or related to an investigation of Russia’s attempts to influence the U.S. presidential election. But he said he was troubled by the collection -- which he described as part of unrelated foreign surveillance -- and that the intelligence community reported the names of transition team members internally.

“I’m actually alarmed by it,” Nunes, a California Republican, told reporters at the Capitol. “Details with little or no apparent foreign intelligence value were widely disseminated in an intelligence community report,” he said. He said he didn’t know if Trump’s “own communications were intercepted.”

Devin Nunes, chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, made a somewhat confusing statement to reporters on Capitol Hill on Wednesday afternoon, the headline being that communications by the Trump campaign were “incidentally” monitored by the intelligence community. But beyond that, a lot of things are unclear. Here’s what Nunes said:

First, I recently confirmed that on numerous occasions, the intelligence community incidentally collected information about U.S. citizens involved in the Trump transition.

Again - seems they were Surveilling suspected russian operatives and incidentally got in with the trump folks.

Not seeing how this is good news for Trump.

Mr Nunes said President Trump was "concerned" when he briefed him at the White House, and it was "possible" Mr Trump's own communications were collected.

He said the intelligence collection was brought to his attention, also legally, by an unnamed source or sources.

He said the collection took place mainly in November, December and January.

Mr Trump was later asked if he felt vindicated, and answered: "I somewhat do. I very much appreciated the fact that they found what they found."

What Nunes definitively did not say was that President Obama had ordered Trump’s phones tapped, which, it bears repeating, is the only logical way of interpreting the president’s claim.

The ranking member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) said that he has "grave concerns" over Chairman Devin Nunes' (R-Calif.) handling of the Trump Tower wiretapping investigation.

"This afternoon, Chairman Devin Nunes announced he had some form of intercepts revealing that lawfully gathered intelligence on foreign officials included information on U.S. Persons, potentially including those associated with President Trump or the President himself. If accurate, this information should have been shared with members of the committee, but it has not been," Schiff said in a statement on Wednesday.

"The Chairman also shared this information with the White House before providing it to the committee, another profound irregularity, given that the matter is currently under investigation. I have expressed my grave concerns with the Chairman that a credible investigation cannot be conducted this way," he added.

Nunes on Wednesday said that President Trump was "to some degree" right about being surveilled by U.S. intelligence.

I haven't been following this all that closely, but I don't see how Trump was wire-tapped by other on going investigations has any link whatsoever with Obama. If I call a known Mafia boss, should I really expect my phone call to be private?

For Obama to be implicated in tapping Trump's phones at Trump Tower, he would have to be directly involved in making that decision. I don't think its that likely, but anything is possible. I find this Trump outrage all very interesting given Trump's reactions to Snowden and his revelations. I just watched the Oliver Stone film "Snowden" which I thought was remarkably done. In the bonus features section it even had an entry where the two stars, Stone, and Snowden answered questions. I think for Trump to be outraged now is to show an utter lack of understanding as to what was revealed in 2013.

I guess the Donald didn't realize that what Snowden revealed was that America, and most countries are trolling our private and public footprints whether we want them to or not. This includes all phone calls and anything on computers that can be accessed via the web. But yeah Donald, killing the guy makes sense if you want to accomplish nothing and show America can be a third world country too.
