So, I have what can best be described as a skeletal Facebbok page.
I have 20 friends, all family, some with polar-opposite political views who I mostly just keep tabs on.
I post to just my friends, so my public page is basically non-existent.
However, I do belong to a couple Facebook groups (Facebook yard sale pages, parent pages for my kids' colleges, some food allergy groups, etc.) and post there frequently.
Other than simple posts and replies, I don't do much with Facebook and so have none to little experience with Facebook Messenger outside my small group of friends.
I recently received a couple of Facebook Messenger messages from a high-tech guru who is branching out from his current gig to assisting some research in another area for which I post in Facebook group pages.
I read the messages, did a little research, and he, and his messages, appear legit.
If I "accept" messages from him on Facebook Messenger, does he then automatically become my friend with access to all of my goofy meme posts and loving teasing of family members? Or, can one message someone on a "public" level and still reserve one's private Facebook page?

No. Friend request is separate from accepting messenger requests. I get message requests all the time from selling stuff on Facebook, but they are not then made friends.

No, I have clients contact me on FB regularly, especially the kids I represent in family court.

Thank you, both!! Off to find out which post this guy found just so compelling that he messaged little, old, boring, suburban, house-wife me.
