Hey all, I need some help with cable & internet providers (and no, I am not interested in doing dish or going "internet only" at this time)
I move early March and started "shopping" around (there are 2 providers where I am moving to in MD--Verizon and Comcast / Xfinity)......Both quoted me that it would cost about $150 a freakin' month!!!!! ($149 for XFinity and 151 for Verizon)
This is withOUT telephone......
some questions- How much internet speed do I need? We don't much on the internet (no home based business or thinsg like that)....but we do like to watch Amazon prime......they seem to offer all these plans with the megs or whatever, and I don't understand that
Also at first we were going to hook up 3 TVs.....but apparently each TV costs money each month......they say each TV needs a little box which costs money I thought all TVs are cable ready?? I only want one DVR box and the other 2 TVs don't need a fancy hook up......
And all these equipment costs, I was thinking to buy my own router and whatever, but reading on the internet how tech changes often.... they were saying it is better to just "rent" the equipment from the provider....is that true?
So now I am thinking to just try the cheapest plan (which may be slower internet speed) and just do one TV instead of 3 (it's just the wife and I), but I'll have one web based TV and we can watch Amazon prime and whatever on the 2nd TV....
Ideas? Suggestions?
AND BTW I am axially NOT a new poster Eye just lost my password and stuff from my other account (Moon nose this)
Thanks all

As far as Internet speeds- I have 250 mbps with Comcast and it's just fine for web browsing and streaming Netflix. I don't do any gaming. My package costs $125/month plus taxes and junk fees which bring it to $136. Google Fiber is almost ready to roll out in my neighborhood (they tell me one month). I just got MagicJack for the phone and have Netflix up and running, so will go with their 1000 mbps Internet only at $70/month.
I highly recommend MagicJack for the phone. I think I paid $36 up-front for the hwole year. I couldn't keep my old number but since you're moving you'll be changing your number anyway.

I am NOT worried about phone.
I am thinking to do a Verizon bundle for the $79.99 intro rate (equip and taxes, etc. is extra) It has 150 mbps (whatever that means)---it's only 2 of us using the internet and the most we do is normal web surfing & watch an amazon prime video....no gaming or stuff Is 150 mbps enough?
Also they have a plan for just TV & internet for $69.99 but that has 50 mbps?

For internet, we have 30 mps and it has been fine for video games and streaming Amazon Prime/Netflix.
We had previously owned our own modem, but unfortunately our cable company won't sell us phone service unless we rent their modem. The rental fees are a total rip off, since you could easily buy the device with less than a year of rental payments. Unfortunately that is the cost of doing business with a monopoly. I would definitely buy my own equipment if they let me.

If you are worried about the speed, check with them and see how much it would cost to upgrade the speed later if what you get isn't sufficient. I believe most places like to have you upgrade and make it as attractive as possible.

Like anything, costs depend much on what you ask for. Sounds like they offered you the kitchen sink package or very close.

I must have Athena's package. I have Comcast for just internet and cable and I pay about $132/month, including all fees and taxes.

Get the slowest internet speed they offer. Any cable company is going to be better than what we have out in the sticks on a wireless service (3 Mbps) and we have zero issues streaming anything.

Yes, and I don't have the premium channels. To be honest, we don't even watch tv but I'm locked into a 2 year contract.

[/p][/quote] Yeah, it was $130 total until last month's bill, which was $136. I thought maybe DS and DDIL unknowingly downloaded a pay-per-view movie while they were visiting and found that they'd just increased a couple of the fees (I think it was broadcast network access and ESPN?). That was the last straw. I'd been promised no rate changes for 2 years and while the $120 package rate didn't budge, it sure looked like a rate change to me (even though it was because they chose to pass on cost increases from their sources). So, they're losing me as a customer over $6/month as soon as I can get Google Fiber. And yes, I know that most providers will offer you great deals if they think they're going to lose you. I don't play that game. If you're willing to accept lower monthly payments from me, then decrease my rates and don't make me call up and fight for it.

the other is deactivated, but yeah, you can change it to be your usual. user names have to be unique but not display names.
Go to profile > Edit Profile > Personal tab.. that's where you change it.

We pay more than that for basic TV and Internet. It sucks, but they are the ONLY game in town. Where we live, if we want internet we pay.

We pay $70 a month for 100 Mbps internet only. We also have an antenna in the attic which is wired to all of the tv's in the house and we get about 22 over the air channels with that antenna.
I know you said you don't want any other devices, but we have Roku on 3 of the tv's and Sling TV for all the channels we want but can't get from Netflix like HGTV Food Network, etc. and we love it.
With Sling tv, internet charges and Netflix, we pay about $100 per month. Before we cancelled cable, we were paying $160 or so and it was going up again by $3 a month and they told us we had to get the new mini boxes at $4.99 per month each. Not gonna happen!

I pay about $75/month for mid-grade speed internet through Comcast. I have an HD antenna for the regular channels. I use 4 devices with the wi-fi and other than random temporary outtages (I believe due to the large amount of users in a relatively small area), I haven't had any problems. I have Netflix, Amazon Prime, and YouTube. That's enough TV options for me and DS.

We don't even have the option of anything greater than 40 Mbps. The highest speed available here is 10Mbps. I upgraded to get a lower price, but I didn't really upgrade because that's as high as it goes here, so less money spent for the same speed. They screwed themselves on that one.

Well they got me for $132.00 a month for 2 years (all fees and everything....of course the "fees" can increase)
"Free" HBO for 2 years
"Free" Quantum DVR (sounds impressive but we'll see)
150 Meg internet
"Premium" TV channels (to me that means all the "Basic" channels I am used to)
And telephone (even though I don't need it. it was axially cheaper to include it)
