Returns

So, I needed to / still need to bring a few things back: - a throw for DS2's GF. I wasn't sure I liked it but bought it anyway (so stupid!!!). Of course I found a much nicer one elsewhere, on sale, cheaper than the first one. So I returned the first throw the next day. - two pairs of gloves. From two different stores of course. One returned, the other still to return. - photo frames ... My fault, I bought the wrong size. I bought 3, used 2, I need to return / exchange the third. They were for DS1's wedding photos which he gave to us. Even though the frames were the wrong size, I wanted to put the photos up for Christmas, so I used them anyway (they were cheap). This may not happen in the US, but in both cases, the throw and the gloves, I was not reimbursed. Instead, I got a "voucher" / "gift card" for the amount of my purchase. I find that REALLY irritating! One place matters less because it's right across from my school. I never go to the other store (although I did this time), and don't plan to in future, but now I have to. The throw was $24. I bought other stuff there with that voucher, but I still have $15 I need to spend there by the end of January. The gloves I returned were $11. The gloves I still need to return were $5.50. Do you always return Stuff? Do you ever just "let it go"? I probably won't because money is tight but I have to admit it's tempting. I'm off this week but this is not how I planned to spend my Christmas vacation lol.

I always return stuff. I have one thing left to return. Most of it I returned before Christmas. If I have my receipt here I get a refund back to my card or cash if I used my debit card.

Most places here give you a refund (either cash or on your card), so I'm supremely irritated that these places don't! My best friend at work LOVES that men's store for her DH and 2 sons (the store the $11 gloves came from). I emailed her to ask her if she would like to buy my gift card (we're very close). Otherwise I know I'll forget about it. ETA: I have all the receipts!

I also think it's crazy that one store gives me one year to spend their voucher, but the other store gives me one month.
This said, that month resets every time you use the voucher to buy something.

I would be very irritated if I only had a month to spend it. Most of my really great deals are when I'm just browsing not looking for something in particular.

wvu, I spent some of the original voucher on Sleepytime and fair trade coffee for DS3 / the house. I'm off now so I won't make a special trip there (since it's right by my school), but if they still have Christmas wrapping paper when I go back (hopefully on sale), I'll probably stock up on that. But yeah, it really irritates me. I'm NOT from the shoppers so I really resent HAVING to shop right after Christmas. In a worst-case scenario I'll buy a bag of 1e UK candy (fruit gums) and reset the month.

Your post reminds me why we don't do a lot of gift exchanging in our family. We generally do experiences. No returns that way 😀
But for returns here, if you don't have receipt you get gift card in some places.

Like I said, I have all the receipts, so it's all the more infuriating! This thread makes it seem like my Christmas gifts were a fail ... honestly, they weren't! I returned that throw before Christmas ... but bought it before realizing that store doesn't reimburse. The only real "fails" were those 2 pairs of gloves, and they were just a useful item (I thought), not those kids' main gifts. Everything else besides those two pairs of gloves was a big hit. Which is exactly why it is driving me nuts to have to go back to the stores to return two pairs of gloves ...

So, your kids didn't like the gifts and you have to return them? My family is no takesies backsies. LOL You don't like it, then YOU take it back (and you don't tell them you didn't like it either!)
Myself, I rarely return anything. I don't buy much in the first place and I'm pretty darn sure I want it before I do. Occasionally, if I'm getting clothing for older son and he's not along, I'll buy a couple sizes with the intention of returning whatever doesn't work. That's pretty rare though.

We trade at many stores that will give a credit to the cc you used for the purchase, and I prefer this method. If you paid cash and do not have a receipt, you get a voucher or cash back at the lowest price for that day for the item you returned. It really depends on the store; the more expensive stores seem to have a more generous return policy. Walmart's policy is a pain in the butt IMHO.

I have some things that I found when I was going through stuff de-cluttering from Kohl's to return. I have the receipts. Since I have the original receipts. I can return them. I am waiting until the rush is over to do that. That is why I didn't do it before Christmas. I am not a shopper and mostly shop online. I don't like being in crowded stores and the return line will be long.
When mom died, we found several boxes of depends but couldn't find the receipt. Walmart gave us a gift card for that. I don't think it had an expiration date as dad doesn't buy that much at Walmart.

I always try to return stuff. I have a few pairs of DS' pants that I didn't return because of time. I'll try to sell them to Once Upon a Child or something and get some money back.
The peanut is not touching her Santa gift at all. I'm on the fence about returning it or donating it to a Family Center that provides respite care for children of families that are in the middle of a crisis situation.

I have a bunch of clothes to exchange. When asked, I let people know that DD needs 3/6M size if they're buying winter clothes, and DS needs size 5/6 or Small. Of course, almost everyone bought 0/3M and 5T, both of which are too small.

So, your kids didn't like the gifts and you have to return them?
The youngest one doesn't drive and I'm not going to make him take 4 buses to and from the mall just for that. The oldest one left for his (belated) honeymoon the night of 25 Dec, otherwise for sure, he would have taken them back himself. And he lives in the UK so he can't do it when he gets back. I'll put the gloves and frames in my car, and get there when I get there. ETA: SCORE! DS2 wants the gloves! So just the frame to exchange!

I exchanged the frame this morning. So returns all done, but I still have those 2 gift cards / vouchers to use. ETA: My friend is buying the men's store gift card from me! So just one left to use!

I am going to return a sweater tomorrow. And it turns out a gift I bought my cousin needs exchanged. Of course it shipped from the manufacturer so it can't be exchanged in store. I finally settled on scanning the sheet and e-mailing it to them to return in store and ordering the smaller size and shipping it direct to them. I hope the store doesn't want my card to process the return, they won't have that.

Last week I went to the store where I have the 12.25 euro credit. I didn't see anything I wanted. Since I don't like to waste money, I didn't buy anything. I went back today, ditto. Then as I was leaving I saw these small packages of trail mix, pine kernels, nuts, dried fruit, etc for 1 euro each. Score! So I picked up 12 packages of those. It's a lot for us (in quantity) and I didn't really need them, but I figure, they're inexpensive, they'll keep, and they'll be handy for cooking / outings / long drives / school snacks. I go to the register ... and find out they're on sale. So I STILL have a 2.25 euro credit there! LOL and

I thought about it but I was in a rush so I didn't. Of course the minute I left the store I regretted it lol. Going back there is really not a problem though, it's literally across the hall from my school.

I think for some items it costs way more for the return and processing than the item is worth. That's why Amazon doesn't want it back. I did have to ship a bathing suit bottom back. I think it was $25-30.

I have some heavy duty HDMI cable I accidentally ordered 2 of for DS. It wasn't crazy expensive but I'd think that'd be something you could restock & sell again. I got a refund and kept the cable.
DS bought a Fire stick and then we had to replace the TV so got a smart one & he was going to return it. They wanted to charge $7 for the privilege of taking back an unopened item. He still has it. We'll find a use for it one day.

MJ and Chocolate, that really surprises me that they refunded you and didn't make you return the items. The other day I ordered a box of 12 Yankee Candle tea light candles from Amazon. They arrived yesterday: the Yankee Candle box was completely undone and flattened, and there were only 6 candles rattling around in the (much bigger) Amazon box. The Amazon box wasn't sealed properly so I'm guessing the other 6 candles fell out along the way. They cost $10.
I called Amazon to complain. They offered to send me a new box of candles but I had to promise to return the (half empty) box in the original packaging, which I did this morning. They emailed me a label with free return but I was not happy about having to go to the post office because of their sloppy packaging.
(The new delivery arrived this evening, the express evening delivery was their "gift".)
ETA: That's the first time I've ever had a problem with Amazon, except for a period a few years ago when they refused to deliver here because they claimed our street didn't exist. The geniuses at Google Maps had decided that. Amazon uses Google Maps. DH argued with Google Maps for weeks until they finally agreed that our street did indeed exist. But during that time, Amazon refused to deliver here.

I've ordered from Amazon many times. Once I complained about a keyboard not working, the company sent me a new keyboard without needing to send back the old one. I also complained about a calendar I had gotten last year, they refunded my purchase and didn't require me to send it back.
Of course, I also ordered the wrong video game. I was able to return it to them and get the correct game. (I had ordered PS3 instead of Wii by accident.)

More proof that the returns policy is more generous in the US.

Maybe they wanted to see how it was packaged debt. Or maybe they are more generous here. Of course they might have to be more generous due to laws.

I need to return a sweater to Target this weekend, and not sure if they will take it or not. It was a Christmas gift from across the country, so no receipt and I'm not sure if the local Target even carries it. But it is Mossimo brand, so hopefully they will acknowledge it is theirs. I really loved the sweater, but the first time I washed it one of the arms completely unraveled.
