they let us go early for the storm so I am home
but I don't do much at my new job so far.....I am chalking it up to being "new" and still waiting for systems passwords and background checks and things
I never thought I would say this, but I am getting bored...ideas on things to do to fill my time?
I can't have a cell phone....I read random crap on the interwebz.....I make sure to even poop twice a day so I don't waste time pooping on my free time away from work :-)
also I read a book once....
ideas on other things to do?

well I don't think I can be overtly obvious about it, but no one will say anything (unless one of the big bosses shows up)....so the time I read a book I faced the corner of the cubicle out of sight and kept my computer open so it looked like work stuff

I play on message boards
I also go to Barnes & Nobel website where you can read the first 20 or so pages of books. I've read the first 20 pages of hundreds of books.
I also read the blogs of my Real Housewives.
I read about celebrity love lives like Taylor Swift but never Kim K.

Do you have a catalog you shop from? You've already mentioned reading a book and that is my go-to. Or...you can just stay here and be entertained by us! Do you like doing crosswords, logic problems, etc? You could get a puzzle book.
Hopefully, your work will pick up. A slow work day is slow death to me.

How tight are they at work regarding extracurricular activities? It's the word "tight" that got me wondering. It was all downhill from there.

I work in the lab in a food factory. Can't get caught reading and most internet is blocked . We scrounge around in the R & D cooler/storage room and make good things to eat.

I worked for military base as a contractor. I was SOOO bored. Couldn't find enough to do, but everyone loved my work. I would rather be busy than bored. The day is so long when you are bored.
I surfed Internet a lot. That was when I found the old msn money board.
I also did puzzle books. Word find, crosswords, etc. I got hooked on those books. Po got good iathiding in my portfolio so people walking by couldn't tell what I was doing.

What interests you? There are a lot of science-related websites that are aimed at people who are interested in science but are not actually theoretical physicists. I love science, and I used to peruse those when I had some downtime. If anyone had questioned it, I could legitimately have explained it away as work-related since my translation work mostly involved scientific and technical material.
The Smithsonian website is interesting as is the National Geographic website. The latter has a lot of live cams observing various types of wildlife that can be quite mesmerizing. The Smithsonian website currently features a 3D rendering of a wealthy Pompeiian's residence.
There are websites with quizzes on any subject you can imagine.
There are websites that let you learn a language at your own pace.
Most of the world's major museums have websites with selections from their collections and other interesting stuff.
There is a 3D virtual tour of the Lascaux cave paintings.
And there is always the Khan Academy.

Take a look at Coursera or other online learning sites and pick up some new skills, work related or otherwise.
I schedule my continuing education to be during our downtimes. If I'm really desperate and sick of professional reading I'll watch some free CPE webinars. Or clean my desk, archive old client stuff on our computer servers, etc.

Yep, I'm one of those weirdos. One reason I dvr "mystery" shows - so I can fast forward to end and then I go back and watch to see how they go to that conclusion!!

That would explain why I never peek at the end of the book I am reading. I've been hooked on historical books for decades. The problem is there are no surprise endings. If you are following Napoleon enroute to Waterloo, you already know things are gonna be tough for the emperor when he gets there. If you are following Custer toward the Little Big Horn, well, he's gonna have a bad day at the end of June in 1876. If you are looking at options open to Robert E Lee when he abandoned Richmond in 1865...well you already know there will be a meeting with General Grant at Appomattox on April 9, 1865. Or, if you are following Julius Caesar, well, the Ides of March will not be lucky....

But seriously I think past history has been as distorted as modern history!!! Therefore I don't read many historical books unless you count The Day of the Jackal. Just picking at you wyouser

I will openly admit that I'm not reading anything of real value most of the time. And I have a horrible soft spot for historical romance novels (yeah, shove that on my list of housewife stereotype). I balance that by reading a lot of Stephen King. lol But I have a goofy system for picking my romance books. I buy them at Goodwill (paperbacks 2 for $1!). I read the 1st page & look for the date/time period. If it falls into the periods I like, then I open the book to the middle & read a page. If it looks good, then I turn & read the very last page. lol

So you have time to kill while at work. I can't stand those offices or places of work where management dam well knows there is nothing for you to do, but still get upset that you are not working! reading a book is a bad idea - showing you have nothing better to do. so if you are not allowed to walk around all day or just be away from the desk / office. I suggest to look busy. work on a fantasy budget excel spreadsheet - create an insane amount of money for personal spending. do a little research or just guess how to spend the money, how much things cost (personal trainer / personal cook / personal assistant / etc.) start a journal in Word. start off the journal with what and where you would rather be right now, where you would like to go, errands to do, etc. point is keep busy typing on the PC; while constantly thinking of something creative or even helpful which would keep you from bordom; and when people walk by they see what looks like something but is actually nothing

last time I was in the courthouse last year waiting to see if I could get in a case / trial. I brought a pad and a mechanical pencil. I wrote out details of what I could remember of how I lost my BFF. page after page, until I got blocked. then I would work the room for attractive women and start a conversation. something simple like Hello - do you hope to get on a case? Hello - how horrible is this to miss work? LOL
so if you can walk around at work. get away and explore your area, building, neighborhood.

I organized my workout schedule. I transcribed over my axial workout (the sets and weights & reps, etc.). I am learning the art of doing nothing. Seinfeld would be proud of me. Catching up on music and YouTube videos. Finding new music to put in my workout mix. I read all about all my benefits package at work. I look at new action figures to buy. Plan my meal menu so I don't eat much junk. And I keep up with the Kardashians.

something like close to two decades ago when I was working for 3 temporary agencies. I would fill in for an admin assistant. and most assignments were to come in and just sit there. the worst was this Vice President guy took retirement and was sending his team to different departments. but my job was to be host to this technology advanced (at the time) demo room. I was to schedule people or groups to take a tour, order refreshments. but these schedules maybe happened twice in a month. answer calls that came in maybe a few times a week! so I literally had nothing to do. one day he caught me playing Freecell on the PC. said something like don't I have some work to do? then gave me a hand written note, asked to type it up. which I did in 30 seconds, and gave it back. so this assignment I was to stay at the desk to answer calls that almost never came in. which prevented me from walking around. another assignment I had I was supposed to help co-workers with there work, including filing and making copies or update their spreadsheets. but when I arrived no one and I mean none of them gave me any work to do! I'm like what the fuck people. after 2 months I started introducing myself to nearby departments and got work from them. then after four months I started getting most of my work from Accounts Payable. still sitting at a desk and getting paid from this other group. who still didn't give me any work to do?? Stupid!
