I'm not sure where to put this, so please move to the correct thread.
I need to be able to hook up to the internet at work and I cannot run any lines into the office. It is a weird situation, I am paid through a county entity, work for a non-profit in a federal building. I need access to the internet that is not governed by the feds. My work does not have anything to deal with the feds, just office space.
I know, it is convoluted, but the board that I answer to wants me to research how I can have internet access, even if it means finding some kind of hot spot device that I can hook up to my computer. I know that there use to be devices that could be used, but need some opinions/suggestions.

If you have a smartphone you can make it a hotspot and use that to access the Internet. My office does not allow us to use the Internet except for business purposes. I get around that by using my phone as a hotspot and getting onto the Internet that way. I usually bring my IPad to work with me and get on the Internet at work using the phone hotspot. You may need to go to settings to connect the hotspot to your device though.

My DH has a hot spot through Verizon. It's not a phone, a little smaller, and it connects wirelessly. His company pays for it, I think something like $50/month. It's 5gig of data, which, as long as we don't stream movies/music/games, we can get email and facebook and internet without going over all month long. You can get larger data plans, but it's really just a backup for us since he works from home and really can't be without the internet. We don't use it often, but it works really well when we do.

I have a stand alone hot spot though AT+T that I use camping, it is great. in fact it worked so well I dumped Mediacom(cable.co). My company uses Verizon hot spots and they also work well. make sure you get unlimited data as it uses up fast

Thanks to all of you! You have given me some great ideas and I will check with Verizon. I knew that I could use m personal phone, but I do not want to pay for it on my bill, plus I don't want my phone to be considered a public record, so to speak.

well this is a close to what we use at work Hot Spot. we take to customer sites, basements especially keep it in your purse, pocket, shirt pocket, pants pocket, desk, just somewhere where you will not forget it. people in the area can connect to it when provided the password
This is a USB Connect only connects to your PC - not shared - I also have this at work. I keep in my bag. I use at my parents cause I don't have to use their network and they have to find the password and all this BS. they get confused! LOL so I just go there visition with my work PC and just connect through my USB Connect LOL
lastly we used this many very many years ago internal wireless air card
but all this shit is for mobile Laptop mainly you can use on a desktop USB port for the USB connect not the wireless air card. the desktop may or may not have an air card internal? and the desktop will need to have an internal air card to connect to a hot spot. actually I don't know - just gibber jabb'n
