It's name is Hermine (Her-mean) I had to look it up and get a pronunciation for it. I heard it just upgraded to a Hurricane. It's been 11 years since the last hurricane made landfall in Florida. I'm worried people are "out of practice" and unprepared. Stay Safe!! As a fan of Opera - I like the Gershwin reference

Yeah, we're going to either get hit or it will bypass us. They don't know yet.

IDK if anyone in hurricane country ever gets "out of practice". This is a baby one. They'll drink through it ETA: Yes, I do know even the baby ones can be vicious. I hope everyone has a "stormy day" experience vs a viscous one.

It really is true that those of us that have been around a while just stock up on booze unless it's at least a 2. Prob more like a 3 but I've lived far enough inshore my life that they're usually calmed down a bit.

I always see surfers out in the Gulf when they get close. It's the only time they get any decent waves around here. I'm not in the path but I can almost hear some people shouting "Hurricane party!"

Oh hell yea, I'm just pissed that it's not close enough so I have to go into work tomorrow. Can't party too hard. But man, weather this weekend should be perfect.

I've been offended about not getting sent home/out of work myself, so I totally understand. Enjoy the sunny weather that always follows.

I was just thinking that since "somebody turns 18 every day" - there might be a lot of newbies out there experiencing their first hurricane. It's been a lot of years since something more than tropical storm came ashore.
Party safely!

There's always newbies and the news will have them scared out of their minds right about now. The coverage is intense and very focused on preparation. Unless they live under a rock, they've heard the basics by now. The experienced locals are at the liquor store.

I'm admittedly weird, but damn I miss living on the Gulf Coast & having a storm roll in. I LOVE the rain & don't get nearly enough in Georgia. Not every hurricane is a Katrina. Only ran from 1 hurricane my entire life & it was only because they were going to close the airport & I had tickets to see GnR in Dallas. Then it didn't even hit Galveston like predicted. lol

Screw the newbies, they're making me feel old. So are the newscasters. They're going on and on about how it's been 11 years since the last hurricane in Florida. I was fine until the jerks had to actually mention the year and name of the storm.
Had to drag it out of my subconscious that sophomore year of college was 11 years ago. I didn't need to freaking realize that!!!

It hit the day before my bday & it was the year I got my first boom box. I got it a day early because of the storm hitting. I really didn't need to know it has been 33 years since then. lol

I'm under a tropical storm watch and we are expected to have winds of 50 mph, rain about 9 inches with a high threat of tornados. I work in a Federal building, but am not a Federal employee and our building is closed tomorrow. It's a good thing that I already schedule a vacation day tomorrow, since I cannot enter the building if it is closed. Schools are closed tomorrow so at least I don't have to worry about the kids. I haven't really stocked up, but did stop by the store for some food, water, and beer. So we're set to stay inside for the day. My only fear is that the worst weather will happen later tonight and I won't be able to see what is happening outside. I think my kids are going to be surprised, they don't remember the year when we had 3 hurricanes back to back. Heaven forbid if the internet goes out, they won't know what to do with themselves.

Hopefully, any tornadic activity will be announced by your town sirens. Or better yet, none st all. I dislike all tornado warnings but the overnight ones are the worst. Plus our tornadoes are hard to spot because they are rain wrapped. I will say though the only funnel cloud II have ever seen was around two in the morning when the tornado sirens were going off and a couple of lightning strikes backlit the funnel as it was dropping toward the ground. It was impressive. No damage during thst event.

I've lived in FL all my life and the only sirens that I have heard of are those in tornado alley. I have to rely on the local news station.

On average, Florida has more tornadoes per year than Tennessee, Mississippi and Alabama and we all have tornado siresn throughout the states. .

Tornados are stronger in Midwest than in FL. Alabama actually has most tornado deaths in last 10 years. Less stringent building codes than Midwest.

Most tornado deaths in Tennessee happen in the rural counties where there are plenty of mobile home. You and I live in Dixie Alley separate and distinct from Tornado Alley. Dixie Alley

The map shows Md 9.9 and Delaware 1. I'm in Md close to De. Tornadoes here are rare and not as damaging as the Midwest and South.
Stay safe everyone.

Not to mention, most houses in the Midwest have a basement to retreat to in case of a tornado. I don't know how people manage who live in areas where you can't put in a basement, due to the water table. Where do most folks hide in places like Florida? Bath tubs or closets?
Best wishes to all of our friends in the hurricane-affected area.

Any room that is not connected to an outside wide. The kids and I use my walk-in closet. I guess I need to clean that out real soon. Three adult size people in a cramp space and two of them don't get along should be interesting if we need to use it, hopefully not.

I think it's because a lot of our tornadoes accompany a tropical storm or hurricane. So they're not entirely unexpected but also occur at a time and in places where sirens would already be down? Not much of a help if the thunderstorm last week blew them down.
The tv and radio does come in with warnings. Also, I think the tornadoes here don't last as long as the Midwest ones?
Though frankly considering how little I hear about tornadoes, at least in central Florida, I find 50+ hard to believe. Unless it's more in the panhandle?

Though also those don't last super long either A few tornado warnings are going off a bit west of me. Can't think of the last one that wasn't tied to a big storm.
