Its based on several factors. One being immediate gratfication. Another being ignorance as to the monetary value of silver. Yet another being the fact that you can immediately assess the validity of the chocolate bar while there is no indication that the person on the street is giving you real silver. ... I'd like to see people discuss their reason for their choice.

Most people don't know the worth of a 10oz. bar of silver including me. That said, I'd take the silver bar because Hersey's is milk chocolate and I can't eat it.
Where would you sell the silver bar to get cash?

That has to be fake because it would be way to expensive to give away dozens of silver bars just to catch a few dumb people that want the chocolate.
You can sell the silver bar at a pawn shop for close to the spot price of silver.

ETA: Thanks for the answer. Now if he'd just come to central NJ...

You can sell the silver bar at a pawn shop for close to the spot price of silver. That's the sad thing about experiment. It stands to reason he ran out of chocolate before he got anyone to take the silver. It's also possible that he got some takers for the silver and then reneged, giving them a chocolate bar instead, but there's no direct evidence of that. Optimist: He was standing in front of a jewelry shop. They'll buy silver bullion for near spot price.

Yet video evidence doesn't lie. There wasn't any people with a commodity value knowledge/education in his very limited sample? Here in the US if you have $10 in your pocket and no debt, you are richer than 50% of the population, sadly another area lacking in financial education.

I have to say I agree with Archie. Being of an untrusting mind, I would assume there was no way a guy would be giving away that much silver, and that he was tricking me with some silver looking fake stuff. But the chocolate looks real, and chocolate is yummy.
This is the same reason I hang up on the robo calls that promise me they will drop my credit card interest rate if I call them back RIGHT NOW.
Possibly they are sincere in their offer and I've been squandering oodles of interest payments for years (well, since I don't usually carry a CC balance, not OODLES).

I mean it's not as if the choice is between a silver bar and an iPad. The worst that could possibly happen is you lose out on a chocolate bar.

Oh heck yes, a dollar candy bar or possibly $170 in AMERICAN cash if it is legitimate. I bet most of them are college kids taking a year off from classes

Personally I would feel bad taking the silver. I would see all the chocolate and be like "Ok, cool a lot of people can have this." therefore, I'd be more apt to take it. I'd feel awkward taking the silver and find it to be a joke like I think the point was him just giving out chocolate and he wouldn't really give me the silver. I'd probably feel weird taking the chocolate but I'd still take the chocolate before the one silver piece in his hand.
I always reach for the most of something because I never like to take the last of anything...even the pizza in the pizza box. =P
Also, some of the people clearly knew the silver was worth something but you could see they were hesitant.
And it def. wasn't all kids taking a break from school as even the adults denied the silver.

Virgil, I think the only responsible thing for you to do would be to replicate the study and see if you get the same results...

It just working the system. I've also given out plenty, money and my time, but that's a different subject for a different thread.

free bars of silver on the street... only slightly more believable than the email I got claiming i won the Nigerian lottery. Someone posted a funny cartoon on Facebook a while back about the Nigerian email thing:
It had a Nigerian prince sitting at a computer saying, "I don't get it...I've sent like a million emails and no one's responded. It's free money for Christ's sake!"
I nearly spit up on my computer
