I need a new camera, one that can be used to take under (shallow) water pictures as well. Since I am mostly a snapshot type of photographer I really don't want to spend more than $300. This will be my mothersday present to myself.
Does anyone have any advice on what a good camera (in this price range) would be? I promise I won't bore you by posting endless pics of DGS/family/fishes/flowers/etc.

I honestly haven't looked in that price range in a while. I am a Nikon fan - I have their dslr - and I think they have a waterproof one. Canon and Nikon are always a good bet camera wise.

For product reviews, I really like both ConsumerSearch and WireCutter. The links will take you to their evaluations of waterproof cameras.

You can also check out dpreview.com. That was a site my dad always looked at an recommended to me. Unfortunately, I don't know anything about waterproof cameras, though one of my cousins takes some great underwater shots while he scubas. I can ask him and see what he says. Otherwise, a lot depends on what you intend to do with it. You mentioned being a 'snapshotter', so I'm guessing only shots from fairly close up? If so, you don't need a lot of zoom. Regardless, make sure the zoom you do get is more optical than digital. This explains the difference between optical and digital zoom. It will make a difference in the final quality of your photos, if you ever enlarge them.

I don't know about underwater photography either, but www.dpreview.com/ (also mentioned by moonbeam) is where I go to check out lenses I want to buy, and where I found reviews for my last camera purchase (a compact camera to take on my trip to Europe). I do know I much prefer a camera with a viewfinder to one without, but those are getting harder to find when it comes to compact cameras. There are also underwater "sleeves" you can buy for some models of camera to make them waterproof. If you do that, go with one with great reviews so you don't risk ruining your non-waterproof camera.
