I get the impression that a lot of Americans are serious about the "moving to Canada" escape plan. These people do realize that life up here is ridiculously expensive and that getting permission to stay here for more than a year is exceptionally difficult, do they not?

How are the taxes in Canada, Virgil?  Is it comparable to Europe with 20% VAT and $6-$8 a gallon for gas?

13% VAT, which we call HST (Harmonized Sales Tax), and $2-$3 USD per gallon ($2.75-$4.10 CAD per gallon) for gas.

Bear in mind that commute distances in Canada are huge compared to Europe. I wouldn't be surprised if the average Canadian driver and the average European driver wound up paying roughly equal $ per day, even with the price difference.

Also mind that in Ontario, the most congestion-free routes are toll routes. The irony there is that the provincial government built them (using taxpayer money) to raise revenues, then promptly sold them to private investors (mainly US-based) in order to cover budget shortfalls.

Only been to the area of Canada at Niagra Falls, and along the great lakes, and this city is one I do intend to visit.

I would think Canada would be excited beyond belief that so many people want to move there to live.

Isn't that where Virgil Showlion is from?? Guess you might have to fight off the snow leopards though. Or at least keep a safe distance from him just in case snow leopards come sniffing around.

You don't have to be dramatic.

The most recent data I could find is from 2013-2014, but it suggests a backlog of 350K applicants and a target of 285K new permanent residents per year. Hence the wait to get in runs about 1-2 years. This is prior to reforms made in 2014 made by the PCs to expedite immigration of skilled workers.

That's a far cry from getting in overnight, but I'm pretty sure NNP won't have trouble imagining it.

The 350,000 figure is for people already here and waiting to become permanent residents.

The last figure I found for how many on the waiting list to come into the country was over a million.

I saw that article too, but it's dated 2011 and I get the impression from other articles that things have sped up considerably since then [2] [3]. We've had five years, hence even an amortized increase of 125K approvals/denials per year (assuming no growth in the rate of applications) would cut down numbers by 625K, putting us close to the 350K backlog suggested by the 2014 CBC article.

It's not that I have trouble believing the list is more than a million names long, but all the data I've found suggests a speed up in 2014 and puts the backlog of citizenship applications at ~350K.

In any case, the wait to get in now is supposed to be less than a year. If you Yankees apply now, you'll only have to endure a month or two of Mr. Trump's rule.

ETA: I can't link to the chart because it's in a PDF, but the CIC report on permanent residents in Canada for 2015 shows that immigration from the US is practically nonexistent (roughly 1% of the total). It will be interesting to see if those numbers actually increase meaningfully or if it's all hot air and bluster by Mr. Trump's detractors.
