I've got a cold from hell, I'm hacking up a lung and my head is draining. I do feel like crap, but am functional.
Today is the first day of classes, including Statics (which scares the crap out of me). There's also a structural design class, where I'll be downloading yet another software package to my computer (and usually the first class gives the instructions on how to start using it). So if I blow off today, I'll miss too much (plus, according to the online course info, both classes have assignments due next Tuesday). I know at least one of the instructors will count absences against me.

Yes. I would go. I don't think I've ever missed the first day of a class. I get too much info and a feel for how things are going to go during that first class.
Oh...and I almost forgot the most important reason. At the college I attended if you missed the first class they could drop you. There were often people in the class that weren't enrolled just waiting for their "blue card" to get signed that would get them in and they could bump people that didn't show.

Just gather yourself up and go. Mentally you'll be glad you did. Physically....you'll collapse in a heap at bedtime.
Hope you feel better.

This sounds like one of those situations where you load up on whatever OTC symptom-mitigating products you find useful, safe, and tolerable, give yourself a pep talk, and go.
Don't think about it too much. Just do it. It will be over before you know it, and you can sleep and feel better tomorrow. You're going to feel miserable anyway, so you might as well spend the time moving forward with your plan. If you don't, you will still feel miserable, but you will also regret not doing whatever it was you didn't do because you felt miserable. Then you will feel better tomorrow, but you will still have the regret.
Sometimes you just gotta suck it up and do it.

It's not so much that I feel crappy (but I do), but I don't want the rest of the class pissed off at me for spreading disease and pestilence to the rest.
ETA: I'm dressed and ready to go. Today's the first day I've had on something other than sweats in 3 days.

When is the drop/add deadline? If it hasn't happened yet, it would probably be okay to miss and get caught up at the next class, because others might be joining later anyway. If the deadline has come and gone, I'd take something to ease symptoms and at least pop-in to pick up a syllabus and just excuse yourself if you have a coughing fit.

Back in my 20's, I would have skipped it. Back then, the first class was usually a throwaway anyway. Hand out syllabus, introduce yourselves, and dismiss early. Now, I would try to go, if I could. Different school--more teachers that have a full class the first day.

The problem is, these are 2 x 2 hour classes each week and a phenomenal amount of information gets covered in a single class and I have yet to have a class here where they've not covered a full 2 hours of information the first day.
I missed one class when my dad died last year and I scrambled for 3 weeks trying to get caught up.

Kids can't really be counted on to keep their snot and coughs to themselves, adults have better luck. Take all the personal care stuff you need and some Lysol wipes. Sit away from others explain they want to keep a wide berth, keep your germs to yourself and wipe everything down before you leave.

Today's the first day I've had on something other than sweats in 3 days. I think as long as you are open and careful about it, it isn't a big deal. It's not as though you will be having any direct contact with people or handling their food. So bring tissues, hand sanitizer, don't shake anyone's hand, and sit near the door so you can make a quick exit.

Go. Your classmates will forgive you. Take hand sanitizer to set on your desk, a bunch of tissues, and cover your mouth when you cough/sneeze. The last thing you want to do is start out behind.
(I work at a university, and just accept the fact that sick students are here every.single.day. If it's just a cold, I forgive them for coming in, because each class covers so much info they'll behind if they miss one).

Excellent advice about the Lysol wipes, hand sanitizer, etc.
Mythbusters did a segment on the spread of cold germs through sneezing, hand-shaking, contact with surfaces, etc., and demonstrated that a few common-sense actions taken by the person with the cold can avoid or eliminate pretty much all opportunities to spread the infection. Maintaining distance and avoiding close contact with others and cleaning surfaces that were touched were the primary means of reducing or eliminating contagion. Just be sure to protect or decontaminate things like doorknobs that others will touch after you, and your classmates should escape the encounter unscathed.

Ricola. The natural herb drops are legit at keeping the hacking at bay.

I made it through the first class, one more to go. Looks like my stash of kleenex and cough drops is going to hold up.
However, my head is going to explode. I'd kill for some Sudafed right now.....the good stuff that you need to sign your life away to the pharmacist.

Sending good thoughts for Mich's head to retain its integrity.
Think soothing, nonexplosive thoughts. Think of puppies and kittens and baby giraffes.
(I know what you mean about Sudafed. That new OTC stuff is worthless.)
