My brother thinks he has the key to making the philosophers stone. Sorcerers stone for those that read Harry Potter. He spent all Christmas morning explaining the science to me and DH. Do I win? Omg. Drama has your DB been evaluated for schizophrenia? serious question. No. It's possible but I think it's more he's been smoking way way way too much strong pot.

Atlanta's aquarium destroys Baltimore's hands down. I'd definitely go back again.

I know that's probably true as well but this delusions of grandeur stuff/quitting life to be a nomad points to some potential mental issues.schizophrenia often appears in young men in their early 20s. If he spent that long explaining the "science" in a way that makes you think he actually BELIEVES this vs is just fucking around I would be concerned. Pot could be self-medicating vs the root of the problem.

Agree pot could be self medicating. Also in people predisposed, isn't pot shown to increase/heighten development ... Something like that...
Milee knows about this but I can't tag her from my phone..

Some studies have shown that. They haven't involved huge numbers and obviously for ethical reasons they're not double blind studies, but the ones that have been done suggest causative effect. It's strong enough evidence that I talked to my kids about some family mental health history that I would rather have left alone, but it's there and they should know before making the decision to do drugs.

Mine was with people who all love each other, no drinking, no fighting, quiet with good food. My live is so boring my big news is my great nephew changed majors in college. He was double major in finance and account and switched to entrepreneurship and hospitality, I am not please and nearly said something, only said I don't see why but I can't be a debbie downer and I stopped talking. He wants to own a restaurant, can't see himself selling investments. I did say that will cost hundreds of thousands to his mom but not to him. He has no money and no family backing and will never own a restaurant but hopes to at least manage one. His grades are high and he was waiting for his acceptance to the business school. I see this as a major mistake but I will stay silent until he graduates. Then maybe talk him into going back to school for an MBA or something if he can't land a job. Kids all want to do restaurants at least he doesn't want to be a chef. He has 6 years in a restaurant mostly as bus boy but also waiter now so maybe it will work. Other than giving him a lot of money for college it is none of my business still needs two to two and a half years to finish so pretty much a full 4 years when he started with an AA.

I sometimes think maybe ive gone too far, but while both my kids love art and I encourage them, it's not something either are top 1% at or anything. I'm the drudge who constantly asks, in their presence, any artist we meet if they re making money from their art to live, and noting how many work tons of crap jobs (often more than one) to pay rent and no not making money off of the art school debt...

My inlaws came over for Christmas. We get along just fine, but they have been trying to convince me to join their crafting business for years. MIL starts in again this year and I smile and nod, half listening. But, then she goes on about how she feels bad for all of us w2 people who have everything on paper. So, I stop smiling, confused and ask what she means. She says she feels bad that everything is tracked on paper, the government knows everything and we have to pay our full tax bill. I try to let it go, so I don't have to get into a debate, but she keeps going. Finally I said, don't feel bad for us. This is the society we live in and taxes are part of it. We're doing just fine with our w2 jobs. She says okay, but if you were working your own business you wouldn't have to report as much. Sigh, so now I have to talk about how I feel okay about living an honest life and not being a dishonest person. At this point, I just want to end it because I don't want my statement to imply she is a dishonest person. She tried to back step by saying that for 30 years her husband had a w2 jobs too. I just couldn't...that does not give anyone a free pass to live the rest of their income producing years dishonestly. Fine if that's how you want to live, but please don't brag to me about it. How do you get out of these conversations gracefully? Any fun stories from the rest of you? Send her this story.. www.boston.com/news/local/2015/12/14/owners-nick-famous-roast-beef-accused-cheating-taxes/s8k2EqoE5EjKai43NOPp6O/story.html one of my favorite roast beef places. (I doubt your MIL makes the kind of cash this place does, but still) We had a nice quiet Christmas with no drama or annoyance this year, except how cheesy my mother got after we made the big announcement (I expected it and can't blame her, but it makes me uncomfortable!) My MIL was happy on the phone when we called her and told her, and my brother didn't do anything to annoy me this year. so it was fine!

Lol, my mind went in that direction. It was tempting just to get her to stop bragging to me about it. I'm not leaving my cushy, reliable, 40 hour week, decent paying job so I can work around the clock 7 days/week and turn my beautiful home into a shop w/ inventory. I'll happily pay the taxes. I don't have a problem with legitimate write-offs, but she was making it sound as if they deal with mostly cash and just don't report it. Plus, it didn't help that 30 minutes before that she was telling me about the man they were going to hire to help them with 3000 orders, but could pay him less than minimum wage because it would be "under the table". Word to the wise, don't look for validation from me on this sort of thing. Yeah, but just remember to be avoiding taxes, they actually have to have income to report. If they actually tracked all their costs, it is doubtful they have much of a profit. I get frustrated with my Mom and her home based pyramid scheme all the time. She puts an awful lot of time into it to make a few hundred to a thousand $$.

Ok, so I was not present for this conversation, but one of my Brother-in-laws said that our niece who is 26, said that one time her family was eating at Rocky-rocco's (a fast food pizza place) and her Mother (My SIL) looked at her husband and said remember we had s*x right over there when we worked here? They had their (young adult) kids with them when she said this. BIL said my niece was grossed out as was the rest of the family and they didn't want to ever eat there again. This would have occurred before my niece was born so it was a very long time ago.

How do you get out of these conversations gracefully? I usually just cheerfully announce that the IRS pays a huge bounty on people who turn in others for tax fraud and wonder how much in taxes I'd need to pay on that bounty. (I'd say it gracefully, of course) I you.

She puts an awful lot of time into it to make a few hundred to a thousand $$. Oh you'd be surprised. It's their own business from crafts they create themselves out of recycled materials. Their recent 3000 unit order was for $10 each. Which makes their revenue from this one order $30,000. It will take them 2-3 months to fill the order and each one cost about 10 cents to make. Meanwhile they're selling at craft shows and markets on top of the big orders every weekend. Sure, there are a lot of expenses they can claim, but the way she was talking made it sound like they don't report cash income where there are no paper-trails.

Every [smart] business owner passes on the taxes to the consumer. So if there is a 7% sales tax, you charge 7% more for the item. Business owners aren't really paying any of it out of pocket, the consumer is and the business owner is pocketing more profit by cheating on their taxes.

Not that under-reporting income is ever OK, but with that kind of markup it's even more obscene. If true, I'd be seriously looking into the IRS bounty (as long as I could remain anonymous ). I have known a couple of people over the years who seem to see the owning-your-own-business thing as an easy way to not pay taxes (and who also seem surprised to learn that not everyone routinely cheats on their taxes). I don't think they really understand the potential penalties at stake or think that sort of thing only happens to celebrities. Paying taxes can be painful (especially writing out those quarterly payment checks), but it sure beats prison...

I had an awesome Christmas. Went to a resort in Napa on the 24th, just got home yesterday evening. My son, my mother, my brother, his new-ish wife, my nephew, and my SnugglyBumps were all present. Other family members were not able to make it and were missed, but we had a great time anyway.

My BIL commented that he wasn't worried about money for retirement, because when his was gone the government would support him. I REALLY had to bite my tongue. Here's to wishing your BIL a lean, and not overly comfortable retirement.

So I will gift him a minimum amount of money to stay in school two more years like 6K a year let him get student loans, work two jobs and let his grand parents or someone make up a shortage if needed. I had hoped he would land a great job after college then I might help him buy a condo or something but now expect he will have a struggle so I will let him until he figures his life out. He has bedrooms at his grand parents and his dad's and when home for Christmas his sister stayed with dad so he had her room so he won't be homeless if he flounders. I wanted him to like investing and was thinking of buying him a ROTH but now won't. He can grow up first he is only 19 if he is making 20K a year paying student loans at 23 I will talk to him. If he is making 50K then I was wrong, I am not always right. I don't know what entrepreneurship and hospitality degrees lead to.

We had mostly uneventful holiday. We did enjoy embarrassing DS21.
On the way back from MIL we snapped a picture of rad signs to post on Facebook. The sign showed Trojan Abe going one way and clinic avenue going the other way. We posted with the caption " sometimes you have to make a choice in life". DS rolled his eyes and DS told him " yes your parents make condom jokes so deal with it"

Some of these places you can stay at hotel or their employee quarters. The Marriott in Cayman had rooms for their valued employees.
