Anyone subscribe to this beauty product-a-month club?
I am thinking of giving a membership to a young relative in college.
Yay or nay?

I haven't heard of it. I know some people that love ipsy. It's the same type of thing I believe.

I was given Birchbox as a gift for a year.
Pros: - It was fun to receive a box of random things each month - felt a little like opening a present every month. - There was a new shampoo I found that I loved which I probably would never have known about or tried without it.
Cons: - Although it's fun to open the "present", the contents are incredibly miserly. It can be disappointing to feel like you basically got a box of 3-5 teensy, tiny samples of random stuff you will never use or don't like. - Although they ask about your general coloring and some other personal info, the boxes didn't feel very customized so often the contents were not remotely stuff I'd use or like. - If I'd actually paid $ for it, I would have been really angry since it would feel like there's no "value". There were usually 3-4 incredibly tiny samples of products (and again, they often weren't things you'd use or like) and the samples were so small they were smaller than what you'd be given free as a sample in their store for instance. Then, they'd throw in another random thing like an emory board or Hershey kiss sized chocolate. The YMer in me felt like the entire box was usually worth about $2. Most months, my biggest impression was that as a businessperson I wished I'd thought of this idea; get vendors to pay me to include their samples which they also provide and then get customers to pay me to send them random stuff they'd be able to get free anyway - genius!

They had boxes like this back in the 70s if I remember correctly. They worked more along the premise of "Pay only s&h for the first box and then cancel any time." They were a rip-off . . . mostly no-brand products and the s&h was exorbitant.
I hate those "gifts with purchase" that you get with dept. store make-up purchases. Most of the products aren't my style or color.
However, no, I haven't specifically used Birch box.

Just a suggestion but why don't you google Birch Box reviews and see what is being said. Like bamafan1954 said I remember this from the 70's and it was a rip off. But not familiar with BB.

I will say that although the sample were very tiny, the products themselves weren't no-name or junk products. The quality of the samples was high - expensive brands and high end, quality products.

If she is someone like my niece (21) who loves makeup, she will like it.

World of Beauty was the 1970s version. They are still around but are part of Cosmetique, it seems.
In other words, I did a little research. Birch Box seemed to get good reviews . . . in part because of that random Hershey's kiss, milee. The college kids seem to like that.

Can you make your own monthly box of travel size items and send that? Sounds more realistic. Include that Hershey's chocolate but more than one.

I think you need to consider the 'personality' of the person you are thinking of giving this to....
My co-worker LOVES getting a box like this - she LOVES the idea of getting a "present" every month, she LOVES cosmetics, she LOVES telling people about it. To be honest, I'm not sure how she really feels about the samples - she seems to get a really big Feel Good from the box and being able to talk about it.
I have a friend that gets a bigger feel good from presents than whatever the presents actually are... she LOVES unwrapping stuff... she'd rather have 10 individually wrapped lotto tickets than all 10 tickets wrapped together. <--- OK, maybe not lotto tickets. But, she is a self described "Quantity over Quality" kind of person. If she has to choose between an orange the size of a softball and a regular sized orange - she'll choose the softball sized one - even though on some level she knows it might be 70% pulp or taste like a lemon. She can't get past the "Bigger MUST be Better" rule in her head. She also really likes to receive stuff - she's big on 'reciprocation' since she gets such a big Feel Good from getting stuff - even 'junk' - she gets a 'feel good' from giving stuff to people (because she anticipates the feel good they will get). So, I think you need to consider the recipient of the gift...

I keep reading this thread title as "Bitch Box". I thought it was going to be a place where we can get on our soapbox and complain.

That's because if the media is to be believed, the majority of college kids have no clue about being financially responsible and are getting student loans up to their eyeballs in order to facilitate their 4 year party. They don't think of whether $20 for a box with a sample of nice shampoo, a tiny lipstick not in your color shade, a hotel sized bar of nice smelling soap and a Hershey kiss is a good deal or not.

I have given her personality a fair amount of thought. She's young, she's hip, she's definitely aware of what is trendy although she may or may not buy into a particular trend. I'm not as young and hip so was looking for reviews from younger, hipper, people here. I took NNP's advice and googled Birch Box, and also googled beauty subscriptions. Since my niece doesn't wear a whole lot of makeup, Ipsy and Maven (which are more geared toward makeup) were eliminated from contention. I read mixed reviews online for Birch Box. So I went with a PopSugar Must Have subscription instead, since it tends to have a more varied mix of contents (beauty, hair, lifestyle, gadgets, snacks, etc.). It was either that or some plain vanilla random gift card. I really hate giving plain vanilla random gift cards. I think she'll enjoy it. She's getting 3 months of surprises delivered to her college mailbox. Hopefully, it will be something she will look forward to during the dreary winter months.

This kid works hard all summer long in the family business. She's not a hard partier. She's a strong student -- got a Presidential scholarship to her school -- full tuition. I have no doubt the rest of the cost of school is coming out of a college fund or her parents are easily cash-flowing it. She's got a servant's heart and is a kind soul. She is far more of a girly-girl than I am, but even so, is very natural in presentation and appearance. She's majoring in business -- keeping informed about consumer trends is appropriate and, hopefully, enjoyed.
