The delegates were appalled by the lack of gender equality in America. They found the U.S. to be lagging far behind international human rights standards in a number of areas, including its 23 percent gender pay gap, maternity leave, affordable child care and the treatment of female migrants in detention centers.
The women discovered during their visit that women in the United States have "missing rights" compared to the rest of the world. For instance, the U.S. is one of three countries in the world that does not guarantee women paid maternity leave.
Another main area of concern for the delegation is violence against women -- particularly gun violence. Women are 11 times more likely to be killed by a gun in the United States than in other high-income countries, and most of those murders are perpetrated by an intimate partner.
While the delegates were shocked by many things they saw in the U.S., perhaps the biggest surprise of their trip, they said, was learning that women in the country don't seem to know what they're missing.

The UN can stick it where the sun don't shine. What a bunch of mealy mouthed hypocrites. How about they go to come barbaric countries where women are truly mistreated.

So it isn't embarrassing that in a comparison between other wealthy countries in the world, American women end up getting the short end of the stick?
I thought we supposedly cared so much for families? I guess we do, as long as we don't have to pay for any maternity leave to encourage those families.

Who is saying they care about families? People who have families care about families. F the UN. I wish we'd kick them out of this country once and for all.

The "23% gender pay gap" is a myth debunked many times over by anyone able to search, read, and add. Paid maternity leave isn't a human right, and frankly it shouldn't be a company's problem if and when their employees' productivity goes to zero on account of their personal choices. The "11 times more likely to be killed by a gun" is a poor attempt to conflate Second Amendment support with misogyny.
But by all means, America, if you want to be as crippled, broke, and miserable as the rest of the UN, dying off as quickly as you're being overwhelmed by immigrants that want nothing to do with you or your culture, there's no shortage of UN working groups to get you started.

Yes, it's embarrassing and I agree with their findings. But it's not surprising to me. I live in the South and some of the beliefs and behaviors towards women around here go back about 50 years in many circumstances. Yes, there are many countries that have horrific conditions and women are treated like chattel but it doesn't make what's going on here not true. It's not comparable to what they deal with on a daily basis but their findings are correct here in America. Not every where, not everybody but it's still happening right here in the land of opportunity.

Can you describe the "American Culture" Virgil? I fear that my understanding and definition of it might be outdated and I'd like an update if I may!

It's always odd to me when people keep using the women make 77 cents for every dollar a man makes (which is really not even worth arguing because the people making the argument obviously ignore anybody who disagrees with their extremely faulty logic), and why is it that people like to cherry pick areas where they feel women are "being mistreated" while conveniently ignoring areas where men are falling behind (like living). As far as the rest of the "complaints;" like passing campaign finance reform to allow more women to get elected into office or really most of their bashing....all I have to say is:

Why don't they compare job classifications instead of gender? Like MDs make more than RNs & more male MDs / female RNs? More female preschool teachers VS male high school math teachers. And I could go on ... to compare in a vacuum is useless dribble

Maybe what they are missing is that American women don't feel the need for the government to get involved in their family. They also don't want their tax $$ spent on these programs.

So women who aren't Americans spend 10 whole days here and presume to tell us how to run our country?
I call bullshit on that. The UN is a joke. Last I checked, we don't vote for them.

No, not really. Americans have the common sense to know that it's the governments or your employers responsibility to accommodate your procreation.

Yes, because the UN is too useless and scared to go where there could be real issues and do anything about them so it's easier to point fingers at "civilized" nations and tell them what they're doing wrong. Assholes.

Apparently they don't read BloombergThey probably read it, along with the many other economists or studies that show that the 77 cents for every dollar is simply untrue when unless you don't compare the same job, and value placed on income or other benefits...but at the same time probably also choose to ignore it.When men outnumbered women graduating from college, it is "interesting" to see the difference between what people complain needs to be done to correct the gender imbalance, but when women outnumber or outgain men (or pay less than men in different types of insurances)...it's evidently not a big deal.

Even if they were US Citizens, the salary comparison failed to take into account: ♤ job classifications ♡ seniority ◇ education And WTF with: ♧ female migrants in detention centers (don't like it, leave) ☆ maternity leave (FMLA = 12 wks)

If someone like Cruz is elected, women in the US can say goodbye to their reproductive freedoms.
Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, said last month that Congress could “absolutely” criminalize all abortion by passing a law giving 14th Amendment protections to fetuses and zygotes, thus bypassing a constitutional amendment overturning Roe v. Wade.
This represents the Republican presidential candidate’s strongest endorsement yet of the radical anti-choice “personhood” strategy, which, based on a questionable interpretation of Roe, holds that Congress can simply outlaw abortion by classifying fertilized eggs as persons under the law. If successful, personhood would outlaw nearly all abortions and could even criminalize certain types of birth control. - See more at: www.rightwingwatch.org/content/ted-cruz-we-can-absolutely-outlaw-abortion-without-overturning-roe#sthash.QeiP4Z9e.dpuf

He assumes Republicans have enough votes and that SCOTUS wouldn't hear a challenge. Neither scenarios are likely

... another group of people that don't live here telling Americans how best to run the country. You'll excuse me if I don't get too excited. Has the UN stopped genital mutilation, child brides, genocide, famine, nuclear arms amassing, and all of the other things? They must have if they're worried about the relative ease that US women live in. I'm surprised they didn't cite the lack of a 3rd tv or a non smart phone in their list of grievances [sarcasm on] Wait... you wimmins want smart phones now? That's going too far! [sarcasm off]

I bet they'd shut up right quick once they saw those statistics.

Women in numerous other certain countries are probably 50x more likely than that to get killed by flying rocks being thrown at them if they displease their husbands... or dare to GET raped (Well... you know it's all their own fault for being female and all...). That's why they had to specify "by a gun"
