so last night, my pups managed to shatter the glass top of my 10+ year old discount store coffee table. I'm trying to decide whether to replace the glass with tempered (custom size, will run a couple hundred $s at least) so it will be near-impossible for them to shatter again, or to go buy a new table completely. the rest of the furniture on my 1st floor is Pottery Barn, that I paid literally next to nothing for, since I redeemed AmEx points from all my travel. neither pup has shown that they will chew on the wood, so I'm not worried about that so much. PB is having a sale right now, with free shipping, and I have a $100 gift card from who knows how long ago. a rectangular wooden coffee table to match the console table already in the room (currently the cable box holder) would end up running me about $250.
were I to go buy another discount store table, I'd try to match the one that broke since the end tables are still okay. and that glass would just be the same plate glass that shattered last night. not really a good idea, IMHO.
tell me, YM - WWYD?

as long as it matches (or comes close) to one or the other, I don't really have a preference. it seems like it's going to run me a couple hundred either way. I just know that if I replace the glass, it's gotta be tempered to be safer for the pups.
the reason I even thought of matching the PB stuff is that I found a bunch of gift cards in a box a few weeks back, one of which was that $100 one from my parents. between the sale, and the 15% off promotional code that just landed in my inbox for signing up a new email addy, it isn't going to cost me a whole lot in the grand scheme of things.
as far as $200? I could think of at least a few other things I'd rather spend it on than a table, but I kind of need a table in there. so I have to do something.

Wood coffee table. Any number of things beside the dogs could break the glass in the future.

Get the wood table. Broken glass could hurt the doggies' paws!
(How did they manage to break the glass, anyway?)

I would fix the one you have. If you buy the same table, you will have the same glass problem. I never have a good experience matching things I already have. It is either the color, style, or the scale are off just enough to bother me. You can always spend the gift cards on something else.
Edit: misunderstood your OP. Since pottery barn still has something that matches your console, I would buy that pronto. Because once they discontinue it the opportunity is gone. I am having this problem with my couch, which I love. I would like the matching love seat, but the line has been discontinued. I am stuck with driving all over town to find 2 complimentary style chairs in the same scale.

I think I'd get the wooden table, chiver78. Seems like it would be safer in the long run. Those pups are gonna groooowwww ...

(How did they manage to break the glass, anyway?) Are you familiar with Nylabones at all? one was dropped *just so* and splintered the plate glass in very clean cuts. thankfully neither one of them got cut.

yes, the PB table has a wooden top. if y'all want to look it up, it is the Metropolitan style table. I have the dining room table and a console table (it used to be my front hallway table in the townhouse) both in black. the round table would fit strangely in the space, so I would go with the rectangular one for $50 more. the dimensions just work better.

When we say "wood", do we really mean "pressboard" or something along those lines?

You're not going to like my answer: Get rid of the furniture, get rid of the dogs or send the dogs to obedience training.
See, told ya you wouldn't like it.

One minute it's just sitting there minding its own business, the next minute someone puts a book on it (or a Nylabone) and it goes to pieces. I'm glad that no dogs were injured.

I missed that the pup became pups (plural). Is the second one a golden also? That happened last weekend. 2nd pup is not a golden, but a rescue pit mix. he's a total lovey, but last night was just a mess. if you want to Google "Houston Street Dogs and "Q-tip" then you can see pics in the articles/fb stuff. we are calling him by the same name as the family that returned him. he's been answering to it, so why make more changes than we need to.

If you are 'crafty' or want to give it try - why not around the 'net for ideas for "up cycling" your broken coffee table. Hometalk is a website with all sorts of (corporate sponsored) crafters doing interesting things to furniture. If not that - I think you should buy something new.

ya know, the thought crossed my mind today about getting a nice clean piece of plywood and a snazzy tablecloth. going to wait to make a decision until I get a quote on tempered glass for the existing table.

Glad the pups didn't get cut when they broke the table. The Houston Street Dogs site was amazing-didn't know you were in my area. Another possibility is a piece of scrap granite left over from a countertop job. You might be able to get it for little more than the cost of edge finishing and granite is indestructible.

When we say "wood", do we really mean "pressboard" or something along those lines? it's Pottery Barn. it's fancy packaged pressboard. that said, my dining room table and the upper surface of the console table have done well. the proposed coffee table has the same breakdown - upper is a thicker layer, lower "shelf" is a thin layer. I believe both surfaces are particle board or something similar.

How about a piece of unfinished furniture. You choose and do the staining and poly finish of your choice. 25 years ago, I bought an unfinished coffee and two end tables I finished myself. I still have and use them.

Get cats.
Congrats on the new pup! You are awesome for taking him in and I would get the Pottery Barn table with wood.

Winter is setting in which means tradesman are winding down and are short of work. Anything that would keep them working inside, they will take it and will do so at a discounted price. So my suggestion would be that you find a local cabinet maker/finish carpenter that would build you a solid wood table to match your existing but much more solid and sturdier than anything that Pottery Barn is selling. Plus, you keep that local unlike buying from a store which most likely brings it from a shop(or sweat shop) in Vietnam or Thailand or God knows where else. Buy local MADE!

I'm actually not. that little guy was adopted out to a family in MA, and they returned him. HSD was looking for someone either local in MA or back in TX to take him.

Ditch the glass table(s).
They're always going to be a source of worry in the back of your mind. Besides, speaking from experience, paw cuts (slices, really) from broken glass are REALLY tough to heal.
Either go with the PB, or, search Craigslist. I have found some really fabulous deals on some really fabulous solid wood furniture there.
Everything doesn't need to be matchy-matchy to look put-together. You could probably find something to pull the glass side tables and the console together.

And don't you wonder what kind of puppy shenanigans led to the Nylabone being dropped just so?

I have a pretty good idea of what happened, given that the table was moved clear across the room before the top was shattered. they wrestle, pretty much all day long when they aren't passed out. they have actually managed to slide my dining room set over a few inches too.
I think while I'm waiting on the quote for tempered glass that my roommate's supposed to call around for today, I'll take a look at some FB yard sale sites in my area. I can always paint something black to go with the PB stuff. there's nothing wrong with the frame of the coffee table. I can always put that up for sale myself for like $10.

I have doggy daycare - my roommate works nights/weekends. when this all happened, they were alone for all of 2h. yesterday when we went out to do the grocery loop, we crated the new pup to split them up. we will keep that up for at least a couple weeks and go from there. sent from my electronic distraction

I would not get another glass table if you are going to continue having bones of any type around. But I would crate your dogs when you aren't home if they are that playful. My dogs are 4 and 12 and one is always crated when we aren't home.
Together, they would destroy the house if we aren't there to put a stop to the playing. It's for their safety as well as your sanity.
