pittsburgh.cbslocal.com/2015/11/17/local-soccer-club-treasurer-accused-of-stealing-350k/?utm_medium=social&utm_source=facebook_KDKA-TV_|_CBS_PittsburghOAKDALE (AP) – The former treasurer of a traveling western Pennsylvania youth soccer team has been accused of stealing almost $350,000 from the team’s funds. Forty-nine-year-old Richard Hurey of Oakdale is charged in Allegheny County with theft, receiving stolen property and other counts. Prosecutors said he resigned as treasurer of Arsenal Football Club Inc. recently after six years, and an assistant U.S. attorney who is a board member of the under-18 soccer club then contacted authorities with concerns about club finances. Prosecutors allege that Hurey made hundreds of debit card purchases and ATM withdrawals for personal use in addition to writing numerous checks to himself and others. Hurey waived the charges to Common Pleas Court on Monday. Defense attorney Lyle Dresbold said he and his client “dispute the figures” but declined further comment

We had a thread a while ago about crazy family secrets and shame. I felt so left out with such a boring family, but later found out that my father's uncle (a favorite amoungst us all!) stole a million bucks from an organization he was involved with. 78 years old, and went to jail for 2 years.
I feel guilty about charging people what they actually owe to cover our expenses for our soccer club - AND - we are an all volunteer club, so we are super cheap. I think our "all-in" number is around what teams like Arsenal pay for their uniforms. How can these people do this? Is it an act of desperation or over-confidence?

That had to be one heck of a soccer club to have that much money available for theft.

These clubs have a pile of money. Our local Booster clubs have piles of money. It's pretty incredible how much they can raise.

Having two signatures required would help that.

These club teams are such a sham in general. They convince parents to pay them large sums of money to train their kids, they spend their weekends traveling around, and they pay even more money for travel/hotels/tournaments/etc.
Even the level-headed parents will say "Oh, I know Billy isn't going to be a professional baseball player, but he's having a lot of fun and it keeps him busy".

Well, DD does travel basketball. And, we spend money to travel even though we know she isn't going to be professional. But, we have a lot of fun doing it. And, we had to sell candy bars and then there was a fee to join and that was all we paid. The hotels and stuff, you personally pay for.

Nothing like winning state or regionals and winding up in ESPN camp at Disney with Pop Warner in December.

Yeah this is limited travel. Mostly within driving distance where we might only stay one night or not at all. We do a couple that require a weekend but nothing you would have to fly too. The gymnastic families go everywhere.
