Their study covered encounters such as stops and apprehensions by officers but also those in which police responded to a report of a crime or a request for help. (from link above) Considering that whites aren't as likely to end up dead when they come into contact with the police, I would guess they are more willing to initiate contact. Wish I could find a link to the study that has the "contact with the police" data.

Thoughts? Yes. Why are you so focused on black people?

I wonder if you added up ALL minorities stops (black+hispanic+indian) how it would compare to whites.
IU do know our local police used to stop blacks quite a bit (back 35 y/ago)BUT that was due to their not being very many living locally then. Today I see about equal stops. Junky looking cars appears to be a determining factor.

Like deminmaine, driving a really old truck, paint gone, the bed of the truck held on by a comealong. Being stopped was almost a daily occurrence.
Then one day I bought a much newer truck(heavily financed). Guess what, I got stopped in my newer truck, but this time was to check on the temp. sticker.
After the officer checked out the paper, handed me back my licence, said "Thank you, Have a good day, Sir"!!
"SIR??, SIR!!, Holy Crap, I had went from a"White Trash Punk" that need to be stopped almost everyday, to a respected citizen,
All it took was for me to go deep in debt for a nice looking truck!! I also moved out of that neighborhood that may have helped.

... Is it any surprise though that whites get the most stops? Whites are by far the biggest single demographic in this country. This isn't the claim of the article in the link. I quoted the actual claim in reply #1. It is also a percentage of total population, not an absolute number of contacts.

Both are incidental to the main point (and headline) of the article, ... ... Yet the first questionable claim became the title of the thread and was presented as fact. Your reply presented it as fact. For me, it is worth calling people on questionable claims. If it isn't for you, well, whatever.

I got stopped by a traffic cop this morning. I know there's no u turns on Oak Grove, Citrus or any of the other side streets off Oak Grove. But there's a small side street where I've never seen a no u turn sign (business area, not residential). And I did one. Needed to. Apparently I just didn't see the sign.
Me: "I'm sorry sir, what did I do wrong?"
His tone changed. Let me off with a warning. Nice guy!
Think it was bc I wasn't argumentive??

Without additional data of how the police officer response to people of different ages, races, and genders who commit the same infraction and respond the same way it is impossible to determine.

Judging by how his expression changed, he wasn't ready for an apology
My formula for getting out of a ticket:
Be polite Do exactly as asked Apologize
You can fight it later but at that moment the objective is to not get it
