This has been on the news most of the day here. It is kind of strange, because if you remember the escaped convicts in NY state earlier this summer, this is a semi-rural area with lots of boating lakes, vacation homes, etc. Similar area, but not really hilly.. Only difference is the police have no pictures of the three offenders this time.

Always a sad affair for the family, police force, and the community.
The three are a danger to the community. Desperate men take desperate measures.

I live in metro Chicago - about 45 min drive away. Late DH & I used to camp & fish in the area BC (before children). Life is getting WAAAY too scary.
It was on the news all day Tue & I suspect will be a top story today - have not had the news on yet.

The link didn't work for me. Do they know why these three suspects shot this guy? Were they fugitives? Where they in the middle of a crime when he came on them? Or just random drunk stupid guys?

here is an updated article, but honestly, nothing close to finding these perks. He reported suspicious activity, three suspects, two white, one black, asked for backup, then said he was in foot pursuit. www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/manhunt-continues-as-fox-lake-mourns-slain-cop/ar-AAdQEXYI think the police are really being tight lipped on all details. It was believed they stole his pistol, pepper spray, and police radio. If true, he must have run into some really bad people. Most people if confronted by a policeman, would simply fight back, throw a couple of punches, and run like mad. They had presence of mind to take things off him. from the article More than 100 officers were expected to continue searching overnight Tuesday for the suspects, described by police as three males, two white and one black. All day, officers from throughout the Chicago region, sweating in bulky tactical gear and toting high-powered rifles, combed the village of about 10,000 near the Wisconsin border. Helicopter blades pounded overhead as traffic froze and schools went on lockdown. Gliniewicz, 52, was on routine patrol around 8 a.m. when he radioed that he was responding to suspicious activity, according to the Lake County sheriff's office. He started a foot pursuit, but no one heard from him after that, authorities said. His colleagues responded and found him shot in a marshy area near U.S. Highway 12, a main road through town, authorities said. His gun was found near him, said Lake County Undersheriff Raymond Rose. Gliniewicz died at the scene, Rose said. The offenders should be treated as armed and dangerous, Rose said. He said police were working with "limited descriptions" of the suspects. Known to some as "G.I. Joe," the trim, muscular, tattooed Gliniewicz had served in the Army, according to his Facebook page. He was known locally for his work with Fox Lake's police Explorers program, which gives youths who aspire to careers in law enforcement an up-close experience. "He, as the leader of that, had a tremendous impact on a lot of young people in the county," Rose said.

Without going into details, this is not too far from where I live. Some schools went on lockdown yesterday and others are closed today. One of the commuter train lines out there was shut down for awhile as well.
They have no idea where these guys are. Hate to say this, but I think they're long gone by now.
The officer was supposed to retire but stayed on at the department's request. He left behind a wife and four boys. He was a pillar of the community and worked heavily with youth groups.

I was curious, because what little I saw about this, it was being reported that the police officer was targeted and killed just because he was a cop - as if there are people rampaging the country looking for police to shoot. I was wondering how they formed that opinion when they hadn't caught or even identified who these 3 guys are.
Sounds like this cop came on a crime in progress and when he chased the criminals they realized, at some point, he was alone, and turned on him and killed him.
This is a horrible thing, and I hope they can find enough evidence of who these guys were to track them down and stick them under the jail (or if they killed them in a shoot out, that wouldn't hurt my feelings). But at least it doesn't sound like a case where some random guy shoot the first guy in a uniform he could find - that would be getting frighteningly close to anarchy.

I have lived very close to Fox Lake for the past 12 years and have definitely noticed an increased law enforcement presence the past couple days, DW was impacted by the train delays. It is just sad here right now, I fear as well that for the moment the perpetrators have gotten away. Hopefully they do something stupid that gets them caught, I remember the Browns Chicken murderers were caught several years later because they couldn't keep their mouths shut (hoping this don't take near as long).

I hope you're right. I hope these criminals have left the area. I imagine everyone around there is pretty darned nervous right now. I know I would be; especially, if I had children. Here's hoping the creeps are caught quickly.

... I hope you're right. I hope these criminals have left the area. ... No personal offense meant but this just stuck me as interesting. Reminds me of Twain's War Prayer. Where do you hope they are now a threat?

I do not believe any media reported it was a targeted attack. There was some confusion in the beginning whether it was a traffic stop, or "suspicious activity observed" in the early reporting. Evidently it was suspicious activity, and he asked for back up, then said he was in foot pursuit. That was the last transmission and back up found him down in the grass.

I imagine the three suspects have split up and all have gone in opposite directions of the country.

I imagine the three suspects have split up and all have gone in opposite directions of the country. I am wondering if they had a vehicle in the immediate area, and simply got in and drove away before law enforcement even knew he had been shot. If they did, unless someone in the area saw them before the shooting, these guys wll get away with it, since there are no descriptions. Hopefully, one of them will get arrested for something, in the future and probably make a deal to squeal on the trigger man.

The media is jumping to conclusions and pushing a 'war on cops' angle. Some are calling out black lives matter protesters as a murder cult because of one horrible shooting instead of blaming the person that pulled the trigger. Cops get killed- it is a risky job- but cop killings are down this year- a good thing- even thought the media won't report it. Not a lot was said about the drunken white guy that used a shotgun on a LA cop- guess there was no citizen movement to blame on that one.

They are looking for three people 2 white 1 black They have no clue if all three joined in, or if it was just a single person. As far as a war on police......well some Muslim extremists have no problem killing them And if the "black lives matter" group want pigs to fry like bacon, they are promoting a war on cops. Please post something about the case you reference. I assume he was arrested without white people rioting??

Please post something about the case you reference. I assume he was arrested without white people rioting?? I already have it straight- they are looking for both white and black subjects that killed the officer during an arrest attempt or something like that- what does that have to do with 'black lives matter'? On the protester front- because one asshole has a sign promoting 'frying pigs like bacon' then the thing to do is attribute that to the entire movement? Has the black lives matter group come out on record as promoting the shooting of police officers? And what if they did- is the song 'Cop Killer' responsible for dead cops? You cannot have it both ways- either the person pulling the trigger is at fault or not. If you agree that the black lives matter group is responsible for creating the one criminal that ambushed a cop (which there is no evidence yet that was the case) then you agree that the confederate flag groups and other racists are responsible for the kid that shot up a church. Take your pick- tell us where the blame should lie.

The "Black Lives Matter" protesters are just like any other large group that's unhappy with the status quo. There will always be some within any such group who will take the rhetoric too far. There will be some, but fewer, who'll actually resort to violence. That's what happens when a large group of people gets together because they're fed up with something. The whole group isn't made up of monsters. There are, however, almost always a few monsters among them.
