I like how the guy took care of the one filming his daughter in their backyard. When the creeps came to complain he met them carrying.

There is an appropriate use for drones. Unfortunately, they are affordable by some real miscreants. The missuse is in the news.

I liked the one that showed the whale watching.

They have good uses. Trouble is some people use them poorly.

Just like anything else ........ they are fine until they invade someone else's privacy.
Personally I think the guy that shot one that was hovering over his yard with birdshot was right on.

drones are a lot of fun...they obviously have commercial applications...
that being said i think there is great potential for misuse...i think it goes beyond privacy issues...
not sure how much a substance like c4 weighs but i'm sure this will eventually be used as a delivery system...i'm aware your average joe does not have the access but there will be those that do...

There seem to be more negatives than positives to them until someone figures out how to adequately police them. One was used recently to drop drugs into a Ohio prison yard.

They showed some footage where they were flying them over the beach and could see sharks. That does seem like a good application of a drone.

Apparently some of them were flying over the forest fires out West and impeded the fire fighting efforts.
I think these are like laser pointers - cool to use until someone points it at the cockpit of a landing plane and blinds the pilots.
Getting packages and pizzas delivered by drones sounds exciting, until they're clotting up the sky over your neighborhood.

Expensive toys.
I am old enough to remember the days when there were flying models - sort of like radio controlled cars but the flew a bit. NOTE: I said a bit. Could NOT get in the way of planes of ANY kind. Were NOT big enough or powerful enough to cary cameras/weapons/drugs.....
I really think personal use 'drones' should be similarly restricted. Municipalities, police, fire, military......assorted state & federal agencies should be the only entities allowed to own & operate these more modern 'toys' and then ONLY fo specific purposes like shark spotting, fire spotting, anything to do with war activities, border patrol.........

I imagine they would be extremely useful to the police.
Instead of having high speed chases on the freeway that can endanger everyone, follow the criminal with a drone until, unaware he's being followed, he pulls into his driveway, then surround his house.

For starters I should state that I live in an extremely rural area. My property is posted for no trespassing according to state law. Even police officer needs a warrant, or to see a felony in action to enter the property. If a camera laden drone was seen over head I would "furtively" shoot it down using #7 1/2 lead shot. That size shot would have enough knockdown power and range but not even be close to be able to reach the property lines from a shooting position near the house. If called by law enforcement, I would claim to have seen nothing.

Thought of this last eve:
Drone operators should be trained in whatever 'rules' are developed and licensed - just like drivers
Drone planes should be registered and licensed just like autos

www.slate.com/blogs/future_tense/2015/08/14/black_bears_interacting_with_drones_in_university_of_minnesota_research.htmlTheir paper published in Current Biology on Thursday found that bears had a physiological response to nearby drones even when they didn't change their behavior to respond. Last fall, the researchers observed four bears that were wearing heart monitors and GPS tracking collars during a total of 18 drone flybys. The bears' heart rates increased during every drone interaction. A 1-year-old male's rate went up 47 beats per minute, a hibernating female had a 56 bpm increase, and a female with her cubs spiked up 123 bpm. The bears' heart rates returned to normal pretty quickly.

They panicked and ran fast and far. Those drones are loud. Might be good for cattle herding !
