We are going to a wedding this weekend at a resort in the middle of nowhere BC. As it's high season, minimum stay is 3 nights so we have a cabin for those nights. We're going up Friday, wedding is Sat. and we're returning Monday.
It's an utterly spectacular resort if you are mobile - all sorts of hiking, rafting, horseback riding, skiing (if it was winter) - all activities that I simply cannot do anymore. No WiFi. No TV.
I told TD that if he wanted to join his cousins on hikes, to do so. I want him to get out and enjoy himself.
I have a loaded Kindle and will likely grab my laptop and bring it along with the first 5 seasons of Downton Abbey that I've been intending on watching. I think that this is the first time I've been slapped in the face as to what I cannot do anymore, and it's really hitting me hard.

Yikes, that would be a bummer. I'm sorry. Have you already contacted the resort to see if they have anything that is accessible for you?

Wow, you mean you'll actually have three days of peace and quiet? I'd commit a felony for that right now.
You can catch up on some reading, do some sketching (nice views, right?), just sit and listen to the wind whisper through the trees...
Make it about what you can do, rather than what you can't.

Do they have any spa stuff?
I'm with captain I'd kill for relaxation. However I understand when you get slapped in the face with those things. It does badly suck to be reminded of what you can't do anymore.

I get what you mean about limitations, The Walk of the Penguin Mich, and you have my sympathies (I'm kind of in the same boat with some former - but not all - outdoor sports). Are you willing to ask if there are any local outdoor adventuring groups or guides in the area who work with/provide assistance/accommodations for folks with limitations? I know they exist out there in the world - - I hope there may be some in that immediate area. Good luck whatever you decide.

I liken a day without some form of exercise to a day in hell. I could not sit and read or watch anything for three days, regardless of the scenery or company. I'd bury all the bodies in the wilderness!
Mich, can you swim, or do any in-water movements? Does this place have a pool?

I already have lots of peace and quiet most of my days. My problem is that I probably have too much. I know that this isn't a problem for many and shouldn't seem like a problem, but I don't like how isolated that my life has gotten over the last 3 years. I don't like that I can slam through a dozen books/week or watch way more TV, be online, play more games than I should. When I was working and could get around, I'd have killed for the time. SO's family had a cabin that we used to go to in the same area and I LOVED it.

No spa, this place is pretty rustic (albeit expensive). I think that this is really the first time my disability has really pissed me off. Always before, I've been able to figure out a work around.

I'm a knitter, so I look forward to those times that I'm 'forced' to be without electronic distractions. If I didn't knit... I would read, deck of cards, hell I once spent 24 hours staring at fog from a boat and enjoyed every minute of it. Instead of a hike, can you stroll? Are there towns nearby to explore? I knit too, but not in the middle of summer. I suspect no a/c and it'll be very warm. I can walk, as long as the path is not too rough as I have very poor balance. I also have a limit of about 100 yards.

Maybe the resort has all-terrain Segways (it's really a thing).

Can you PM me where? I'd love to see the location.
Can you walk, albeit slowly? Maybe find a nice walking path with some views. What about bird finding with a book and binoculars? Can you golf? (is that lame?)
I offer you my sympathies. I'm an extremely physical and active person and you are definitely living one of my worst nightmares in being limited. It must be so frustrating for you.

Don't know if you like to draw, but hours of uninterrupted time to do landscape studies sounds heavenly to me right now. Or, as geeky as it sounds, I'd be working on learning some new macro coding in excel with time to just play around. As far as connections - do you have a smart phone and can you tether a laptop or tablet to that? Heck, this sounds like an occasion where it'd be ok to pay for extra data.

Wine...lot's of wine. Is there any sort of project you could bring with you to work on? Do you like to play music? Like, get a ukulele and a book and teach yourself to play? (Okay, that may sound a bit crazy to some, but I love learning new instruments.). Photography might be fun to try. Umm, candy crush can take up a bunch of time. . Anything crafty. Start a blog. ETA: surely there will be a few others there who aren't going to be out doing stuff all the time. Maybe bring a cribbage board and some cards in case they want to play card games? That would be less isolating.

This is what I was thinking too. Maybe host a "get together" for some of the other guests with food, drinks and games. It would at least give you a social outlet even you can't do the physical stuff.
You do have my sympathy as I am a very active person. Having limitations put on that is not fun but I hope you can find some sort of outlet to help you get through the weekend.
