Every thing else is a petty problem compared to the earth quake and resulting tsunami. The world will never be the same.

Disasters happen all the time around the world. It looks like there will be a significant loss of life but nothing compared to the SE Asian tsunami a few years ago.

I for one think we just have better and faster news coverage. That is why the impact is so shocking. I still cannot believe the videos. TD, it may be a while before they really know the extent of things. That nuclear plant thing is scary.

Yes better and faster news thats why it is devestating. I'm sure everyone in Japan feels the same way. This happens to be the largest quake in the nations history I would say shocking in it self. I for am gonna work on my emergency preparedness kit I have been putting off. Since I live in earth quake territory never know when disaster will strike.

I agree. I heard a report on the news about a passenger train that was washed away by the waves. On the good side (if you can use that term), people in Japan are very aware of the risk of tsunamis and hopefully headed for high ground as soon as the quake hit. 8.9 is a strong quake.

The world will never be the same.
Humans have an amazing ability to pick up and rebuild their lives. Just look at old pictures of San Francisco after the 1906 earthquake and how quickly the city rebuilt.
Obviously, people still grieved for those injuried and killed.

Uh-oh, looks like a nuclear reactor may be in trouble.

Beyond the loss of life, livlihoods and being nuked. There will be a huge disruption of shipping of goods from the Far East. The insurance claims on the W. coast marinas is beyond comprehension.

I was reading that commercial fishing boats in Crescent City headed out to sea to avoid any tsunami issues, I'm surprised more people didn't. I hate to think what major waves in a marina would do.

They're reporting damage to the harbors here, but no injuries so far. Sounds like the only result here is that some rich guys will have some banged up toys.

My brother is in Hawaii, he said it was pretty creepy watching 100 yards of reef get exposed before the waves came in, but the waves weren't bad where they are, and barely came up to the beach walks.

I heard that outside of some minor flooding in Maui there's not much damage in HI.

Oregon's tsunami warning ends in 20 minutes. 6 foot waves hit here at low tide. No reported damage.

Three idiots in Crescent City who went to take pictures got swept out to sea. Two made it back to shore, one is still missing. Freaking MORONS!

Another stomp to the smiley face. The happiest states - 1. Hawaii, tsunami; 2. North Dakota, blizzard ; 3. Wyoming, sunny 48.

My brother and his family live in Osaka. The wife and child were out bicycling and didn't feel anything. The wife didn't even know about an earthquake until she reached her parents' house. My brother, OTOH, was knocked off his office chair.
Few morning updates surpass "Your [family member] has experienced a [humongous act of God]" as effective wake-up calls.

It's been reported that the Earth's crust over in Japan has torn open a large hole in the Earth. 150 miles in length X 50 miles wide.
Something bigger is on it's way. California, here I come.

Great photos.
The thing with the U.S. rescuing, we are footing the bill; but the U.S. has to respond.
ETA: I was wondering about the giant whirlpool. That looked like a bathtub draining.

Mich said the news reported that a CA who was in Japan went down to the beach to take pictures of the waves and got swept out to sea. Bet he got a last few great pictures though.
I remember one of the clips of the Indonesian earthquake when waves were rushing in over a beach. There was a person who appeared to be just sitting on the beach watching the waves arrive, they washed over him/her and they were gone. One young girl saved her family by insisting they leave the beach as they had just studied tsunamis in school and she realized what the receding water meant.

The idjits I was talking about were at the mouth of the Klamath River, just north of Crescent City. The "one" has been found and confirmed dead.
I wonder if a coroner can list "Gross Stupidity" as a cause of death?

That would be unkind to the relatives Dawg. They could just list "Darwin"
