I guess if they can hack Kaspersky they can hack just about anybody. I also imagine this was pretty darned embarrassing for Kaspersky. One of the world’s leading cyber security solutions providers, Kaspersky Lab has revealed that its systems have been breached by unknown hackers. The hackers then went on to plant a malware related to the dreaded Duqu family on its networks. Kaspersky says that the hack attack was so sophisticated that it was almost impossible to find that the networks had been breached. Eugene Kaspersky, the company’s CEO described the attack as “almost invisible” and said the software was so sophisticated it could have cost $10m “maybe more” to build it and support it. Full Article

Scary - this seems like such an organized attack, breeching all of our "most secure information" like health, government, now cyber protection companies. This is not good for our country & now, just for a moment, I am going to wonder why the security IT folks are making such huge incomes

Well, considering the Chinese (purportedly) may well have the SS#s of every US federal employee, I guess this breach is small potatoes. Kaspersky (headquartered in Moscow, Russia) is number one in security software; yet, somebody got through their defenses to plant malware right under their noses. It's really difficult to stay a step ahead. It's been a game of leap-frog for years now.

I've pretty much given up on keeping my information secure. I still use reasonable caution, but it seems almost hopeless. Learning that the federal government can't even manage to keep employees' private information secure was like the last straw for me. Security and privacy in the digital world is an illusion.
I'm not a very interesting target and I don't have anything to hide, but that's not the point.

Kaspersky had been going downhill for about the last ten years or so...they used to make really good AV software in the late 90's early 2000's. I'm not sure what happened with them (new ownership, new management, too big too fast?) but I dumped them around 2003-2004 because their product was using up too much memory and getting too instrusive.

I don't use their software, either; however, they do more than just make software for computer users. They also design security systems for small business and large corporations. From what I've seen over the years, they've always been expeditious in reporting anything they find to everyone who'll listen, including whole countries and governments. They're still a force to be reckoned with, I'd guess.
