If rice grows on a plant, why isn't it a fruit or vegetable?

Why do students ask for extra credit when they didn't get credit for some assignments in the first place?

How come a nation could send a man to the moon before somebody came up with the idea of putting wheels on luggage?

Why does Nikki Manage insist on rapping? I start out loving her songs and then she breaks into this awful rap that is equivalent to nails down a chalkboard to me. It isn't that I hate rapping I just hate HER rapping.

How did people ever start eating mushrooms? They seem creepy. Was somebody one day practically starving and decide to just try one, and then showed other people they taste, um, okay or good or whatever people that like mushrooms think?

I can see trying a mushroom long before eating a crab or lobster. [Shudder] Crabs and lobsters look like water bugs. Ick. And although I love them - who was crazy enough to try the first oyster?!?

People were probably smart enough to imitate animals. If mushrooms and oysters were good enough for animals, they might be worth a try for humans.

Reminds me of a time long ago. I saw the comedian David Brenner do a bit about the bravest man in the world. Don't remember which he listed first, but it was either the man who ate the first egg, or the man who drank the first milk. It went something like:
"You see that thing (chicken) over there? I'm going to follow it around, and whatever comes out, I'm going to eat it!" Or, "You see that big thing (cow) over there? I'm going to pull on those things hanging down, and whatever comes out, I'm going to drink it!"

Why do we still use the Babylonian base 60 and base 12 system for seconds/minutes/hours? Why do we still use days of the week named for (mostly) Norse gods? Why do we still use a calendar of months created by the Romans, which includes month names that translate to 7, 8, 9, and 10, but correspond to the 9th thru 12th months?

Because change is hard and the very people you'd need to vote on and implement the change are the exact people who would find it most uncomfortable to change.
And that's why we still use English Standard Measures instead of metric. As a manufacturer and logical person, I love metric. But I am still most comfy in what I have used for years and can easily estimate - ESM. When my European relatives have a baby and they tell me how much it weighs in grams, I still don't really know if it's a whopper or a peanut. Takes some mental calculation and my brain smokes a little.

And yet, everyone and their brother constantly upgrades to the newest iThing, and cars must be redesigned every few years, rather than sticking with the tried and true.

Guess I'm consistent in my slowness to change, then. I'm on my second iPhone (only because I finally broke the first one) and don't have an iPad. My car is now 10 years old and has a little over 100,000 miles on it and I had a little celebration when it hit 100... I will cry when it dies - it's very comfy, setup just how I like it and does all the crazy things I want it to do.

Why do we still have daylight savings time? It just seems stupid to me. The time is what it is... why do we still feel the need to manipulate it.

Why do we still use a calendar of months created by the Romans, which includes month names that translate to 7, 8, 9, and 10, but correspond to the 9th thru 12th months?Because two roman emperors decided they deserved their own months and took days from other months to make it so. (Poor February) I had to Google it, because I thought I remembered (from Latin classes) that they'd renamed the months for themselves, and took days from other months to make theirs longer (and thus more impressive/auspicious). It looks like the Romans mucked around with the calendar many, many times. At some earlier time March (and spring) was the beginning of the year, and thus the ordinal names were correct. December was the last month, and the days of winter weren't part of any month at all. It was a lunar calendar, so to align things the months roughly alternated 29 days (hollow) and 30 (full), with full months more auspicious. After more tinkering, days got added and subtracted, because even numbers were unlucky (??), things got confusing, January and February were added to the front, a complicated scheme began of intercalary months of varying lengths inserted into the middle of February to realign lunar cycles (and for political purposes -lengthening my party's term). And of course there's the whole counting backwards from the kalends, ides or nones system: the kalends is the first of the month, the ides is either the 15th or the 13th of the month (depending on how long or short the month is), and the nones is eight days before the ides but the Romans counted inclusively, so the word is "nones", for nine. Obviously all logical, right?
