I know this is supposed to be a dead thread, but I was on one of my rare clothing shopping trips, looking to replace the shorts in my profile picture (they're probably 10 years old and I need a pair a couple of sizes smaller- far more flattering than cinching up the current pair with a belt). I went to Marshall's and everything was either ultra-short or capri pants. I HATE capri pants. Why are they still around? I swear that no matter how slim you are they make your rear end look fat. Does anyone here actually like them? I didn't know there were capri haters in the world I like capris. I have always liked them. They are comfortable. easy to wear around and excellent for running chores or working around the house. Maybe you are not buying the right kind? I never feel it makes my butt look big. I actually have that problem with shorts If the fit is not good, my ass looks huge, even though I am far from heavy.

I like capris. I don't find that they make look fat. It just depends on your body type. I like cargo type shorts too, but they make me look dumpy. I'm way to curvy to wear them.

I didn't even try any of them on yesterday. It's just that I can think of only ONE woman who looked good in pants that were that length. They weren't capris because they were flared; they were brown and she wore them with brown boots. She was young and slim. Most of the time, when I see a woman in capris who's hippy, I just wonder what she was thinking when she bought them. Not that I'm a fashion plate myself, but I try to get things with a flattering fit.
I think cargo pants are what I'm actually looking for. I dont' like shopping for clothes on-line because it's a hassle to find out where they were made (I avoid China) and I really want to try them on and see if they're flattering, without having to return them if they're not. I'll just keep looking!

I am a fashion plate and I rock capris. I'm also pretty curvy. You just have to wear the right shirt and accessories. I'll go shopping with you! I live to shop! My budget doesn't allow for as much shopping as I'd like, however.

Thanks, but I rarely shop for clothes these days- I almost felt guilty when I bought a top I liked because I'd planned to buy shorts, not a top. DH and I spent a total of $300 on clothes last year. This year I've bought the top I just mentioned plus 2 pair of Birkenstock sandals. I'd rather spend the money on travel!

But, capri's are like skinny jeans. I think people like them or they hate them. My boss hates skinny jeans so much that she made sure to get it written in our policy manual that the days we can wear jeans in the office, that skinny jeans are not permitted.

I like capris better than shorts for the summer. I don't look as good in ones that are tight, but rock the straight leg ones. The ones the are more like floods, I think I look best in. I really need to go clothes shopping too, 'cause my preferred pair are a size or 2 too large, and I'm cinching them up with a belt, too.

We have a long list of things we can't wear on days we can jeans (including flip flops, t-shirts with non-sporting logos, tank tops, etc.). It's basically a long list of all the clothing that my boss and other c-suite staff feel is inappropriate. However, keep in mind that until about four years ago, all the men in the office were required to wear a shirt and tie in the office. So the fact that we have any day where we can wear any type of jeans is a win!

I like Capri because I have long legs so it is difficult to find things long enough, but there is some leeway in capris.

I really like capris. I'm tall and a little hippy, so they work. I have thick thighs, so any shorts more than 2-3" above the knee are a no-no for me. I prefer the short capris (a little longer than knee length). The long ones make me look like I bought pants in the petite section. I also like bermuda shorts since they're the only shorts I can really pull off.

I have great legs, but I also have bigger thighs, so shorts tend to "ride up" the legs. Capris or longer shorts work for me. Actually, I prefer skirts/dresses. Because I'm lazy!

I have a few pairs of ankle length pants and capris. I love them for the summer months! I also wear skinny jeans and rock them.
Loft has great shorts, all different lengths. The ones I get have a 4" inseam, I think. Not too short and not too long.

I don't wear capris either. I'm fat and they look terrible on me. Nope, not going to wear them.

Try the regular size on in the store and ask if Penney's carries the petite sizes online. Most Chico's stores do not have petite sizes in the store but have them online.

I used to wear capris a lot but haven't the past few years. Just skirts and short shorts lately.
@athena53, since you are tall and thin, I'd think non-flared capris would be flattering on you.

Funny that this thread was revived just today! Yesterday a coworker I'm friendly with asked me about how to move up in the company and up her image. She's not a BFF, but we do chit chat from time to time and get along well.
She's about 50 or so and a little overweight but not fat by any means. She works in our IN office, so I don't see her much except when we attend meetings or I have to go there for meetings. What I've seen her wear are maxi skirts in black or brown, oversize long sweaters over a shell or tank of some kind with scuffed flats. Her hair is skinned back in a bun and she doesn't wear any makeup. Just kind of dowdy. She doesn't wear makiup because she doesn't know how.
We talked for a while to define what she meant and I then said, well, you asked so I'm going to be honest. If you don't want honesty, then stop me now. She said OK, go ahead, I really need to know what to do differently.
My advice was to go to a Macy's, Dillards, Nordstrom or other fairly upscale department store and ask to see one of their stylists or someone who can help you pick out a couple of outfits. Then follow their advice. You don't necessarily have to buy everything at that store, but you do need someone to guide you in getting a new look. Once you know what kind of clothing to get, you can branch out to TJ Maxx, Marshalls, Kohl's or Ross.
I also told her to visit a cosmetics counter and ask them to help her choose makeup for a natural look, not like a 30 or 40 yo person going on a date. Told her to also upgrade her shoes. If she doesn't like heels, then get some cute flats, but ideally, she should get some pumps or other low heeled shoes in addition to the flats.
So what do you think? She was really OK with what I told her. I know she's got two kids, one in HS and one already launched. I don't think money is much of an issue, but did say that if it was, then talk to the department store, buy one or two pieces but go to the cheaper places for more. Buy one or two outfits now while summer stuff is on heavily discounted sale and buy more later on as you can afford to.

I should add that I told her to look around and if she saw someone whose haitcut she likes, ask where they get their hair cut. Otherwise, goto a salon and ask to speak with one of their stylists. Discuss getting a haircut that is easy to maintain but not too fussy.

A previous boss of my did that, and while I didn't like all of her choices, she definitely put together a more polished look that was WAY more professional than what she'd had.
