So we just got DH a new vehicle. Chevy Traverse. The old vehicle was a Kia Sedona I call our insurance agent to get the auto insurance updated dreading the news. The Sedona was close to 10 years old so the insurance on it had to be really cheap, right? I found out that our insurance will go up, wait for it, $37 dollars every 6 months. Yep, you read that right. $74 dollars for a new car as opposed to an older car. I know different vehicles have different rates, but dayum. I need to check into this BEFORE buying a car. I also maybe shoulda taken up the collision limits once the van got older . I mean who pays for full coverage on a 10yo vehicle - yep - apparently The Captain does . Ah well, lesson learned young grasshoppers. It's something I'll try to keep in mind from now on.

I keep my collision coverage too. I think it is worth it. Once I had an accident with no collision coverage. Totalled the car, I sold it for a few hundred for parts. It wasn't worth much, but 3 or 4k would have been really helpful right about then. That will not happen to me again.

Collison is usually so cheap on old cars. I would have saved maybe 30 every six months and it would have taken me a long time to get the 3000 I got when it was totaled by saving that money.

Ah well, lesson learned young grasshoppers. It's something I'll try to keep in mind from now on. Insurance isn't always straightforward. The insurance on my new Forester wound up being cheaper than my 5 year old car by about $10/mo (both were fully insured). I kept collision on my 13 year old Mazda (fortunately) as it only added $50/6 months to my insurance. That Mazda wound up getting hit by an uninsured driver, so the insurance company wound up paying me out about $6K when it was totaled.

Keep talking, you're making me feel better about being lazy! In most cases I advise my clients to keep the collision on older cars. It just doesn't save much to take it off & like Justme said it may not be much but a couple of thousand helps if you total it. And because the value of older vehicles is so low even a minor fender bender could result in a totaled vehicle.

The make/model and year have a lot to do with rates. Ex's old civic cost a lot because they're stolen so much for parts.

I keep collision until the value of the car is $4k or less per kbb. My truck is about that now.
I dropped the collision on DS car and he totaled it 3 months later. I saved $50 a month (teen driver rates). Car was worth $2000 when totaled and we had $1000 deductible. We did get $400 by selling to junk dealer so only lost $450....

You might want to rethink this. Insurance companies do not reimburse to KBB, but to fair market value. KBB had my totaled Mazda at around $3200 when it was wrecked, but insurance paid out nearly twice that, as that was what a used vehicle in my location would go for.
I'd be even more careful with trucks, as they usually go for a premium.

We kept full coverage on my 1999 Civic until we bought the Fit in 2013. It was our main car (hubs had a 1997 civic he drove to work), so it was worth it for peace of mind. When we dropped the 1999 to collision only after buying the Fit it wasn't a huge deal, money-wise.

Well I'm grateful for the feedback on the collision. Turns out I was lazy smart after all!

Congrats on the new car, Captain! Thanks, but I did mention it's my hubbies' car, right? He's so cute/excited about it. Blue tooth, wireless, usb ports yadda, yadda, yadda. You'd kinda forget the primary purposes is getting from point a to point b if you were listening to him . He's talking about getting a small hard drive so we can copy our mp3 library and just have all our tunes on demand. I guess the radio is capable of controlling something like that? Remember we tend to drive cars for awhile before getting something new, so the advances in technology are pretty amazing.

I have full insurance on both our vehicles, 2004 truck and 2006 car. Both vehicles have less than 50k miles, so they should last a good long time. To make matters worse, DH just had liability on his truck and I actually added the other insurance when we got married.
A few times I have caught DH leaving the truck unlocked with keys on the seat, and once at a highway rest stop he left his wallet sitting on the seat as an additional cash bonus. I have at least got him locking up the garage and the house now that one of his friends was robbed.

Now see, I consider myself a bit of a car gal but it's about how fast I can get from point A to point B.
Probably a good thing I'm more of a YM'r than a car person, otherwise I'd be broke from the speeding tickets.

<<Snatches The Captain's YM card and tosses it into the Chicago River, and when it floats by the Trump Hotel Monstrosity, it bursts into flames.>> That might be the most dramatic way of revoking a YM card I've ever seen...nice job :-P !! If you've been to Chicago and seen the Trump Tower of Terrible, you'd understand. It's fugly from every angle. It's a blight on the landscape. All that fabulous architecture (and remember, this is a New Yorker saying this about another city!) and that 92-story wart wedged in there, reflecting its namesake's ego.

I've had that car for 10 years before he started driving it so I still consider it mine (well, it is still mine on paper). He found his dad's ashes in it the other day, so that would have sucked if he knew they were there and they were stolen!

When my car was ~8 years old (?) and I was in the range when I should have not been paying for collision, I got in an accident. I'm glad I didn't have to pay $3500 to fix a car worth $6000. I know I paid for it as that was one of my very few claims in the 30 years I have been driving, but I would have been so irritated if I had to pay out of pocket for all of it.

If he has a smart phone and has his music on the cloud, then with the wireless, there is no need for a hard drive.
My son connects his iPhone and listens to his music this way. He has hands free calling too - so if he gets a call, the music will stop and he can answer the phone using a button on the steering wheel.

My daughter leased a 2012 2 door civic. Now she leased a 4 door 2015 civic. $486 cheaper per year!!! Who knew. She said she'll never drive a 2 door again.
