Ex-Montana judge who sentenced teacher to 31 days for rape to be honored

A Montana judge who was censured for suggesting that a 14-year-old girl raped by a teacher was culpable in her own assault is due to receive a lifetime achievement award from a local bar association, an official said on Thursday.

State District Judge G. Todd Baugh was censured by the state's high court in July and suspended for 31 days for undermining public confidence in the judiciary by remarking that the girl, who later killed herself, was "as much in control of the situation."

Baugh was also reprimanded for sentencing the former teacher in the case, Stacey Rambold, to 15 years in prison with all but 31 days suspended for the 2007 rape of Cherice Moralez, who killed herself before the case could be brought to trial.

State justices found that Montana law required a sentence of at least four years for a defendant guilty of sexually assaulting a victim under the age of 16.

I realize Montana is not the most populous state in the nation, but they seriously couldn't find ANYONE better to honor?

Hard to decide which I was more shocked by.  His comments about the victim, his sentence of the rapist, the fact that he is being honored, or that this wasn't in a Southern state.

No. 14 is a minor. I don't care the sex of the kid, they aren't at the age of consent to be having sex with adults. And the adult in question was a person in authority, which makes it worse.

We had that situation in Seattle.  34-year-old married teacher with four kids, 13-year-old boy who had been in her sixth-grade class.  She had an affair with him which cost her her marriage and kids.  She also did seven and a half years in prison.  The two are now married, and they have two kids older than he was when the affair started.  Love conquers all, I guess, but she was still sentenced to years in prison.

And yet she gets air time with Barbara Walters and continues to petition the state to reinstate her teachers license.

Having sex with your 13 year old student is sick and unacceptable. It is making me really angry that people are trying to be sympathetic to Letourneau and somehow justify what she did. It was wrong, it is wrong, it isn't ever going to be not wrong. I don't want a psychopath/sociopath/sexual predator in the school system in a position of trust and responsibility. 

These are children for God's sake.
