from NBC News - linkGUANAJUATO, Mexico — A 14-year-old Mexican girl who was taken by authorities and sent screaming to live in the United States was returned home Wednesday after DNA tests showed she is not the daughter of the Houston woman who claimed her. The case of Alondra Luna Nunez drew international attention after a video of the distraught girl being forced into a police vehicle last week circulated. The Foreign Ministry said Mexican officials were carrying out a court order to send Alondra to Dorotea Garcia, a Houston woman who claimed the girl was her daughter who had been illegally taken to Mexico by her father years ago. Alondra's family insisted authorities were mistaken but their pleas were ignored. ** click the link for full story** okay, what the hell? how was this woman's story not vetted before traumatizing a child like that? I hope she faces charges. wow.

After seeing it on the news this morning, my one question is how do you vet it? The kids they're looking for in these situations are kidnapped. If you asked permission to DNA test that'd tip the kidnappers off.
That being said, I think I heard that it was quite a while before they DNA tested her. I can't believe they waited that long and I'm shocked the mom didn't want to ensure she did the same thing that was done to her.
Eta jk guess I heard the timeline wrong. That was a fast DNA turn around.

if you know where to find the girl, you just keep her/her supposed kidnappers under surveillance while you do your due diligence and verify everything.
compare this case to Sean Goldman - the kid whose mother took him to Brazil on an unsupervised custody visit. it took his father almost a decade to successfully bring Sean back to the US.

I'm a bit suspicious of the Houston woman. Did she intend to treat this girl as her daughter or something else?
From an ABC News article, her daughter should be about 12 not 14.

It was also unclear how the girl came to be identified as Garcia's daughter.
In 2007, the Foreign Ministry received a claim stating Garcia's then 4-year-old daughter, Alondra Diaz Garcia, had been taken by her father from the U.S. and was believed to be in Michoacan. This year, Garcia went to Mexico and said she had found her daughter in Guanajuato, prompting U.S. authorities to seek the help of Interpol in retrieving her.
Meanwhile, Alondra Diaz Garcia remains missing. Reynaldo Diaz is suspected of abducting her from Houston in 2007, according to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. A felony warrant has been issued for his arrest.

chiver78-which woman do you hope is prosecuted? I would think if anyone should come under scrutiny, it would be the Mexican judge who could have/should have ordered DNA testing before announcing her decision.

From the story on today she found her through fb. The girl did look quite similar to the aged version of her daughter on the missing flyer. I'm assuming she regularly searches social media and regular media in the supposed area her daughter was taken to.

ETA: I don't think the Mexican judge is touchable under US jurisdiction. I could be wrong, though. it's happened before.

Mexican authorities should deal with the judge if any dealing is necessary. But it should be a learning lesson for Mexican courts (DNA testing to confirm parentage). I am not sure the mother should be charged though either. Apparently it is fact the Houston woman's very young daughter was taken away to Mexico by the girl's father and hidden away. A felony warrant was issued for the child's father's arrest in 2007. Joy, anger for family of Mexican girl wrongly sent to US
