Church bells across the country will toll. One hundred and fifty years ago today the Civil War officially ended.
I think we can all agree this was a momentous time for the country, and hopefully 150 years later we are reaching the goal of freedom for everyone in America.

Hmm, I wonder if they will toll here in the South? My husband (a Southerner) says the North didn't win the war, because it isn't over yet As a Yankee, I just start humming the Battle Hymn of the Republic.

But they should in some of the black churches! I am also not sure if the south is not now more progressive about race issues than up here in the north, other than the big metropolis areas.

I'm not sure, because I've lived here for about 30 years now, so I can't honestly compare them to the parts of the North where I lived as a kid.
I would say the suburban areas are very progressive, for the most part, and most rural areas are fairly progressive, but you still run into some hard core racists. About ten years ago there was a KKK demonstration (poorly attended) in the little town I live in, and occasionally someone I know will come out a surprisingly racist comment, but for the most part, these are the middle aged to elderly people making the comments, so it may be more of a generational thing. Our little rural school only has about 5% nonwhite kids, but a couple years back the prom king was black.
I know when Obama was running for president for the first time, my mother and her bridge club in Northern Ohio were all up in arms about a black man being president (my mother was certain he would bus blacks to her neighborhood and force her to give her house to them) but there again, her bridge club was all older ladies, so could be more a generational thing in the North as well.

Outside of urban areas of the South, it is much the same. Just less overt.
