www.wsj.com/articles/pick-and-pay-tv-coming-to-canada-1426798265 The change, unveiled by Canada’s broadcast regulator and set to come into force next year, brings an end to a hotly contested fight by cable firms that sought to keep the status quo, and marks a victory for consumers who will no longer have to pay for bundles of channels. The new regime will be implemented in two stages. Starting in March 2016, Canadians can purchase a basic cable package, priced at a maximum C$25 a month and made up of local stations and the main U.S. networks. With that basic package, cable firms have the option of offering subscribers more channels either through smaller, bundled packages or on a pick-and-pay basis. By December 2016, cable firms are compelled to make the pick-and-pay option available Doubt it will happen here.

Wow. I'm envious. Canada must have politicians who actually pass practical bills rather than bloviate about themselves. Where can we get some of them? We can trade. I can hook you up with some fine catfish and hush puppies and enough sweet tea to float a battleship.

Time for shitty TV to survive on its own. Forget the damn monopolies.
Imagine the outrage if you went to the grocery store and you were not allowed to buy a steak unless you also bought a bag of prunes and cat litter.
I hate cable- and as soon as Google fiber is up and running here I am going to cut it at my property line

Well crappy TV channels can still get in, cause it's going to be both individual channels and small packages. I figure this is going to make those big conglomerates a ton of more money, that's why it's being brought in. This wasn't done for the little people, it was done cause Bell, Rogers & the other companies figured they will be making more money.
This is all right for someone like myself, I only watch 5 or 6 channels at the most.

I'd be willing to pay $5 a channel for the dozen or so channels I actually watch... I'd still come out cheaper than what I pay now for all the garbage channels that I have to skip over.

Specialty channels now are $2.79 a month on Rogers, that's for channels like Discovery Channel & National Geographic Channel.

Now you are just rubbing it in and that is cruel I posted that to see in a year or so where we are at. The CTRC is saying you can go a la carte or you can stay with what you got. I'm wondering if those 2.79 a month prices are going to rise or not. I'm also wondering what channels will be in packages or not. Rogers seems to already be embracing the new rules, but we shall see.

I have about 50 worthless channels and I have the small package- I do pay extra for HBO- or I could pay another 50 bucks to get the other 'premium package' of channels to get it.
I am starting to rethink this in terms of shows rather than channels- why should I pay for hours of bullshit like 'Amish Mafia' 'Storage Wars' or the myriad of other garbage just so I can get The Walking Dead or Mythbusters.
I only have the time to follow so many shows- like maybe 10- so I really like the idea of scrapping the whole model and buying a series pass or something.
Of course I still enjoy streaming HD movies for free through my cable company when they sell them on demand for six bucks or so
Gotta love Russian servers- if you doubt try the notorious ffilms.org- asspile of HD films- a laptop and HDMI cable is all you need.

I'm in Canada - and in my area, we've had "tier package" offers for almost a year. You can choose what package you want for your channel line-up - everything from basic local channels, to local/national/major US networks, to movie channel packages included, PPV, etc.
It depends on your cable provider if this is something new for you, or something that's been in place for a while.

Yep- I could narrow my choices to 20 channels or less- probably less. That leaves about 70 garbage channels in my tier I have never watched and have no interest in.

I'm probably cutting my tv soon. With sling I can get the channels that were my hold out (food network, tbs). I wish USA and bravo was added but I don't need those as much. So I need to empty my dvr, buy an antenna, and sign up for sling and maybe hulu.

I dumped cable two years ago and bought a digital antenna...I've found 12 channels is all I need. Where people get stuck with cable is when they "can't live" without their sports channels. Ugh...get a life!

HBO is coming to Apple TV in April which is awesome. Between Netflix, buying individual shows on ITunes and now HBO i have everything I want except some live sports which I go to the bar for.
