That's crazy. If the court is willing to drop the charges, the school should too.

Okay, maybe the totality of the punishment was overkill but being dumped from "the gifted-and-talented program" makes perfect sense. Hell, I was in general ed, actually stoned, and never got caught holding.

Remember those white chalky candy cigarettes? We used to pretend we were smoking. They would've had a hissy fit about that!

From the article
or if another kid thinks it might be marijuana, that's grounds for expulsion
So a kid that can't tell a maple leaf from a pot leaf could get another kid expelled?

If parent were allowed choice on where to send their kid to school, schools would stop this idiocy. It is child abuse the way some schools treat students. What this teaches is that students should not trust authority because authority is out to get them.

They pay for public school all their lives through property taxes and many can not afford private tuition because some school administrator has &*() for brains. It is malicious stupidity. My opinion for what it is worth.

My opinion for what it is worth. We could certainly shut down the public school system and save us all the tax money. Then parents could use their savings to pay for school and I could get a new truck.

Zero tolerance policies tell me one of two things:
1) Your superiors don't trust you to make reasonable decisions, and you may be an idiot.
or
2) You self-imposed the zero-tolerance policy because you know you are too much of a to enforce the rules on your own. You have to cower behind policies like this instead of using your own authority to punish reasonably.
I know a lot of time, these types of rules are brought in with much pressure from various people - in which case, you are probably both an untrustworthy idiot and a with no stones.

The problem lie in the fact when it was proven to be wrong, the school continued to push their decision.

Wow. I remember kids bringing dillweed or oregano to school bragging that it was pot. The only thing that happened was everyone thought he was an idiot. How times change.

It seems that there is never a apology from those in charge when such idiotic events happen, in fact they always go into attack mode to justify their actions..even when it makes them look like idiots in doing so..
How the parents explain these actions to the boy is beyond me...they also have to be careful in their criticism as their own jobs might be on the line if the complain to much..being employed as educators..not sure if in same school system , though it seems all of the systems have same policy..
Does no one ever believe in using adult common sense when things like this happen..look into the childs history..trouble maker or not...seems he is a above average student..gifted program...a good talking too with parents present..a stiff warning..Does it always have to be the extreme punishment..zero policy means what...no common sense involved..? Child{children} is now suppose to respect the adults educators . Possible more just fear them..great for the education of the kids...
Not be able to go back to his original school like he is now a piria ...For shame the educators, the school system

LOL - I have a (silk) 7' potted false aralia sitting in the corner of my living room. It looks like a very healthy and mature marijuana plant.
