I am so sorry. This is one of the hardest walks we have to do in life is saying goodbye to our parents with their passing. I have heard people say they felt like orphans and have lost their rock. DDs are so many things to us. The safety net, sounding board, advice giver with unconditional love. Care for yourself during this time.

Stay strong, and if you catch some moments of clarity make them count!
I lost my dad at a young age to a vehicle accident. I always thought that was the worst thing to go through until I dealt with my mom passing due to lung cancer about 15 years later. Even though she only lasted about 2 weeks from the diagnosis it was just awful. I had to fly back from Germany to see her and I delayed my trip about a week because I was getting conflicting information from family about the severity of the situation. The day I got there my mom had started to take a down turn. There's a part of me that thinks she was holding out to see me since it had been close to 2 years since I'd last seen her. I spent several hard days and nights with her in the hospital before she really got bad. We weren't expecting her to pass and even though it felt like time was dragging in the hospital it was all over so quickly too. There was a lot I wished I had told her, asked her, or just remembered with her while I could. I don't say any of this to make you feel bad, but because I hope it helps you make the most of this time. I know how hard this is, and I am sorry you are going through it.

I'm sorry Mich. You can go knowing you did everything right, and everything you could to be as ready as possible. Sometimes, there is nothing more but tears. On his next journey, your dad will be pain-free. He will move on, but you will never really lose him. Part of everyone you love stays with you.

This morning, I was remembering something while I was in the shower that I had not remembered in years.
My dad had been out flying all night (he was a boom operator in the AF, so had flying status). He got home about 3 pm and proceeded to zonk out on the couch. The couch was short, and Shaker style that had slats at the end, so he stuck his bare feet through the slats. We got home from school not long afterwards.....I guess I was a freshman in HS, my sister in middle school.
My sister and I gathered up every bottle of nail polish we had and painted every one of his toenails a different color while he was asleep. He had a beautiful set of tootsies when we were done, in all the colors of the rainbow.
He was not amused, but we were!

So sorry Mich.
I saw my grandfather in the hospital shortly before his move to hospice. The hardest part for me was trying to reconcile seeing my grandfather as he was that day vs how I remembered him. I managed to keep it together till DH and I reached the parking lot and then I lost it.
I imagine it was even harder on my dad and grandmother.
I was in the hospital when he passed. We got the phone call right after I got home. I really struggle with the fact that I didn't have Abby in time. There is nothing I could have done to control it, but I wish he'd had the opportunity to meet his second great grandchild.
Have a safe trip.

Sorry to hear your Dad isn't doing well. I'm sure that the prospect of losing a second parent is more challenging that losing the first. And losing the first isnt easy.
Peace and love to you both.

I am so sorry that you have this pain in your life now, but your Dad was a lucky man because your posts and memories show just how much you loved him through the years. He will live on in you.

So sorry you're having to face this. It's always difficult to say goodbye to a parent. When my dad got ill (heart) and then had a transplant, he had a few more years with us - but Cancer ultimately took him from us.
My mom's passing was more peaceful - her life here was a long one, and she left when she'd done all she was sent here to do.
Cherish the memories of you parents - especially memories like your story of painting his toe-nails as he slept.
They'll manage to bring a fond smile to your face as you look back & reflect.
Celebrate their lives - and the life they brought to you. Take care.

It's too late. I'm at the gate getting ready to board my flight and my sister called to tell me he's gone.
I don't know if I should press on, or catch the shuttle and go home.
Stunned.

I'm so, so, sorry, Mich. You tried to be there to be by his side, but be at peace that he probably knew you tried to reach him in time to say your goodbyes.
May you treasure your memories of "Dad" and reflect on all the happy times you shared over the years. It's a tough and difficult road to walk, but you'll find your footing and eventually your peace. Blessed Be.

Mich, sweetheart, you did your best. He knew you loved him, and he loved you. That love is the most important thing we give one another. Anything beyond that is just icing. I'm so sorry you're going through this pain. I don't know how your family dynamics work with regard to funerals, and all associated with a passing. If you feel it necessary to go, then go. If, on the other hand, your family is like mine, it would be perfectly fine for you to simply go home. Do what you feel in your heart is the right thing for you, luv.
