I guess he'd be surprised to find out that many of those women drivers are armed!

Shouldn't they be more concerned with the fact that the mere fact of being on the side of the road(when the car breaks down) is unsafe enough to get you raped? Does Saudi Arabia have a bunch of rapists lurking on the sides of their roads? If so, shouldn't they clean that up and put those people in jail? How any of their citizens listen to this garbage and take it seriously is beyond me...

No, I drive because my husband isn't home to drive me everywhere that I & the kids need to be.
I guess you just can't fix stupid. And, how about making their own men responsible for their "urges", rather than blaming the victim?

The mental gymnastics this man had to go thru to reach his conclusions are staggering.

Did anybody else catch the part where he acknowledged rape by male chaperones/drivers could be a problem that's why they should have female drivers for Saudi women. Okey dokey. I guess the female drivers will be fair game to distract rapists from the passengers?
That led the host to ask if he wasn't afraid that women might be raped by their chauffeurs.
Al-Saadoon agreed.
There is a solution, but the government officials and the clerics refuse to hear of it," he said. "The solution is to bring in female foreign chauffeurs to drive our wives."

I tend to agree that there aren't a lot of mental gymnastics going on too.

See you need to stop thinking like an American or a Western woman. Put on your Mideast hat and realize women have to cover up so men behave appropriately. It is not womanly in that culture to desire to do things by yourself without a man present in public.
Rape of foreign women is likely even less of a crime than raping Saudi women by Saudi men.

While this guy is a loon, don't forget for a moment that he's NOT alone - it's a "cultural" thing so he has LOTS of company.

Yeah, because foreign women are just lining up to go be chauffeurs in countries that treat women like less than dirt under their feet. I think NOT

Yeah, because foreign women are just lining up to go be chauffeurs in countries that treat women like less than dirt under their feet. I think NOT I'd think the cost would be prohibitive, even for a rich country like Saudi Arabia. What does Pat's husband and other contract workers make when they're working in the ME? Around 6 figures a year? That would probably tempt some women to apply.

I do think it's a good reminder to all the woman in the US who complain about not getting maternity leave, or a special room to breast feed, or 47 weeks off a year to care for their kids- that there are much worse situations to be in the world.
In the end, this guy is saying that any female alone is fair game for rape. Under the guise of protecting them, limit their rights.

I'm guessing that he didn't consider that MAYBE women that want to drive, don't care about that religiously driven bullshit.

This guy doesn't sound any different from the guys in the Rush Limbaugh rape thread that Paul started last night.

And it wasn't really that long ago, relatively, that women here were subject to similar thinking and rules... Indeed, as res pointed out, not everyone here is so far off today....

Yes, I have always felt much safer walking through the city streets alone than riding in my locked car.

I thought the logic was kind of interesting as they continued to question him:
-His solution is that women should be driven around by men -Wait, couldn't those men just rape the women then? -Why yes, they could, so his better solution is to hire foreign female drivers to drive women around in Saudi Arabia -They stopped there, but then isn't the question wouldn't the rapist just rape the 2 women, the passenger and the driver? -I'm sure at some point, the solution is that the only people in the car are women, and that at least one of them is armed...so couldn't a woman drive herself but just be armed?
It's difficult to find a good solution when women alone, women with women, or women with men all lead to rape in your scenarios.
While it sounds insane, at least it kind of makes other feelings about women make sense. If you think any guy who sees any woman is going to rape her, you'd do what you could to prevent a guy from seeing a woman?
