Recently I've noticed an uptick in the number of concerned family/friends/co-workers asking about IRS collection calls. They are all bogus.
A few things to remember.
1. The IRS does not initiate collection activity by phone. It is always in written form, and before accounts are frozen, there are certified letters sent.
2. The IRS does not ask for your credit card number over the phone in an initial contact.
3. The IRS does NOT have the authority to take away your children.
4. There are many levels of communication that should take place before an account goes to collections.
5. (Used if the called detects an accent) the IRS will not threaten you with citizenship revocation or threaten to deport you.
In the past week I've had three co-workers and one family member ask about this. The scam artists appear to really be ramping up activity.

I was feeling neglected by these scammers until last month when they finally honored me with a call.
Up until that call, I felt like Peggy Bundy of Married With Children. Peg was depressed because all the other women in the neighborhood had been peeped by the neighborhood Peeping Tom but her. Peggy did everything in her power to get peeped. Al Bundy, her husband, took pity on her, put on a mask, and peeped her. Unfortunately, the neighborhood women saw someone peeping Peg and beat the crap out of him.
If only we could beat the crap out of the IRS scammers and put them in prison.

Wait until some of the Mormon missionaries complete their service and then work as door-to-door salesmen around the country for security companies based out of Utah. Real treat as they pester you at your front door.

Having spent a career in collections, I would love for these pukes to call me. Unfortunately, as soon as I detect robo call or accent, I hang up. But, it could be a fun thing!

For fun, a friend of mine used to keep a whistle next to the phone just for calls from scammers. Unfortunately, scammers must a a do not call list, because over time the scammer calls disappeared.

My grandma lives next door and would call me when people were out going door to door so I could release the hound. My dog wouldn't hurt a fly, but they didn't know that. She would sit in front of the house and they would walk across the street and keep moving watching to make sure she didn't start running after them. The whole time my dog just sat there looking at them like "That's right. Keep walking". I miss that dog.

This phone scam is being worked on the electric utility company now. They call and tell you your power will be turned off unless you go buy some prepaid cards and give them the info on the card. The scary thing is they have your info and what some of your old bills were. The local utility is working with police as they are not aware of a breakdown in security on their end.
