since when has this become a requirement, though? it's like cell phones - I've been a customer with the same provider long enough that I didn't need to provide mine back then and have managed to avoid providing it since then. someone said in here that her utility company appears on her credit report. I always thought that the utilities didn't report. of course, that could just be that they can't report on me b/c they don't have mine. It depends on the state I think as to if the utility reports to the credit bureaus. MA does. I have a couple on my credit report from a short-term rental and when we had our condo. The ones in this house are in DH's name and SSN though.

Utility companies should have a way to verify identify without ssn. We do it with two forms of ID and a birth date. Most people fax us a license....that has their ssn on it. Lol! If someone refuses ID or ssn we charge a deposit and it has to be paid in cash prior to starting service. Not in MA. They did away with the SSN on licenses about 10 years or so ago and issue a state ID number now.

Just always makes me smile though when someone is so insistent on refusing ssn, but doesnt realize they are giving it to us anyway (?).

I would have gladly given them my DL number, but if I wanted service, I had to give them my SSN. No number, no service period. I offered them a deposit too, to avoid giving my SSN, but that was not acceptable.

I pull my credit report every year and I have never seen utilities reporting to any of the three bureaus. But like I said, I've never had them ask for SS# either. ETA: Concerning SS# on drivers license I think they stopped that in my state years ago.

I think only my first DL had my SSN on it - before I was old enough to know better.

From my understanding, they only report negative information...utility companies can ding you, but they don't help you if you pay your utilities regularly.

Could be that is why I've never seen utilities reporting on credit report I suspect that that's the reason why very few of us on this board have ever seen utilities on their credit report. I can't ever remember seeing anything reported, but I DO remember hearing people needing to pay off utilities in order to try to raise their FICO score.
