Hi, this is my first post in this thread. I have some medical bills I want to race. Besides the medical bills, I have a mortgage, student loan, and some credit card debt. The credit card debt is annoying because I clear it, and then start again, clear, start, etc. But since I need to focus on one thing, I want to start with the medical bills.
The three bills are related to a check up I had in May. The doctor's office is getting out of control with prices and they are becoming very greedy. The practice has been sold a couple of times and getting worse each time.
You never see the doctor, just nurse practitioners. That is fine with me, but since they switched to nurse practitioners the prices have not gone down. Since I have a HDHP I don't have a copay. Once the insurance negotiates I get the bill. Now the doctor's office charges an extra 20 bucks if you don't pay the bill in full the day you visit. Hello, I don't know how much my bill is going to be. They don't care, now I have to pay 20 extra. Then they use an expensive hospital lab for blood work and refuse to send you to Quest which is way cheaper. Besides the blood work being expensive, they sent you a separate bill for the pathologist who processed it, while Quest doesn't charge you extra for that. So after paying these bills and before I start racing the credit card, I want to switch doctors so I don't end up with the same debt a few months down the road. There is one doctor I know of who's very good and more reasonable with prices, so I'm going to see if he's taking new patients. It's difficult to find a spot with him.
Debt 1- Pathologist- Original 107.14- Remaining 27.14. I plan to pay this one off on July 30th.
Debt 2- Office visit- Original 132.47- Remaining 122.47
Debt 3- Lab work from Hospital- Original 255.85- Remaining 215.85
I am using the snowball method to pay these off. I'm sending 40 each time to the pathologist, and 20 to the other two. Once the pathologist is paid off I'll apply 60 to the office visit.
I am not sure I have all the bills. I think they may still send me more because the nurse practitioner discovered an infection and took a urine sample when I went to pick up my results. I am pissed of that a routine office visit has cost me so much.

Who had Murphy last? He came to my household a few days ago. The check engine light came on three miles into my return trip home. Took the Jeep to get the codes checked--thermostat stuck open. It's gonna be a $475 fix. Sorry to hear that. I've had my share of Murphy to last a lifetime.

Mind you, I have had Murphy visit recently and am still not done with the aftermath, so don't send him here.

I'm looking into a new-to-me vehicle sometime in the next six months or so; just gotta run the numbers and find the best scenario that'll work for me.

Don't worry guys, Murphy's with me. I went to the mailbox this afternoon and alas, there it is, another bill from the Hospital. This one is 235.85 for the urine exam. I'm sure the pathologist will send me another bill soon.
I'm beyond angry with this doctor's office.
Tomorrow morning I'm going to call the other doctor my friend recommended to see if I can get an appointment with him in three months. If I can't get in I'll search for another clinic.
I believe in racing the debt, fine, but I particularly believe in finding the root of the problem and attacking it, so I don't end up in the same situation again. Changing health care providers is the only thing that can get me out of this.
I need to calm down. The nurse practitioner gave me enough medicine for two more months. So he wants me to go there and spend all this money every three months when I have no health complications. I specifically told him to give me refills for 6 months, and he said yes.
What they are doing is unethical.

Hugs Ava. I really hope you can get your health back soon. Thanks, but my health is all right. I have a chronic condition I need to monitor every six months or so. The problem is the doctor's office I was using got greedy and starting charging for everything. One bill for the urine sample, one bill for the blood work, two pathologists bills, one for the urine and one for the blood, one bill for the office visit and then another bill when you go back to discuss your test results with the nurse practitioner. Unethical and greedy, that's what it is. The practice has been bought and sold a couple of times and it's becoming dysfunctional in their quest for more and more money. The good news is that I called another doctor who has an excellent reputation and sends your blood work to Quest, way cheaper, and I got an appointment with him for October. So after paying this set of bills I'm over with this crazy doctor's office. I'm leaving and never looking back.

All told, it was about $460 for the diagnostic and the repair.

Ava,
Lab bills are almost always charges outside of the office visit. However, if your doctor is using a lab that is not in network, you will pay the bill out of pocket until the deductible is reached. Then you would pay a % (according to your coverage under the policy) for out of network bills. I agree you should find an endocrinologist who uses a lab in network.

I've told them I have to use Quest and they refuse. Besides that, you are only seen by nurse practitioners now, but the price hasn't gone down. And every time I go there's a different nurse practitioner. I don't know if the pay is bad, or the environment or what, but that's not good for me as a patient. Fortunately I got a spot with a Doctor that treats patients directly instead of using nurse practitioners, he uses Quest Lab and doesn't make you pay for a second office visit to give you the test results. He's very well regarded here in CT and it's difficult to become his patient, but I got in. Better quality care at a lower cost, what else can I ask for? So my uber high medical costs saga will be done once I pay off this set of bills.

Hi, this is my first post in this thread. Debt 1- Pathologist- Original 107.14- Remaining 27.14. I plan to pay this one off on July 30th. Debt 2- Office visit- Original 132.47- Remaining 122.47 Debt 3- Lab work from Hospital- Original 255.85- Remaining 215.85 I am using the snowball method to pay these off. I'm sending 40 each time to the pathologist, and 20 to the other two. Once the pathologist is paid off I'll apply 60 to the office visit. Hi Ava and welcome!! Can you please post your race with a tagline? This helps you and the captains keep up with your numbers. Your tagline will have your name: date of the update, $ amount left (race start date, $ amount beginning, page number race started on). I'm not going to add up your numbers, but you can start with the following: ava: 07/09/17, $xxx (07/09/17, $xxx, PBxxx) You can use tables or whatever else if you are a visible person and like to see the progress in that form. Several of the ladies here can help you with a table. Once you get a tagline together, post it and I'll add you to the smiley list. I like your plan to payoff the debt. It's a good plan. The snowball method works to get it paid quickly and there's plenty of motivation when you see them knocked out fast. Congratulations on getting into see a better, cheaper doctor.

| $19,129.12 | 53% |
Everything is down this month. I don't know that it will stay that way. I've got a $1,200 legal bill that needs to go on the Diamond card, and next month's legal bill is not going to be small, either.
However, I do have a 0% balance transfer (for a 2% fee) on another card that has a $15k limit. So I am going to transfer the BECU balance to that card, to keep it at 0% through May 2018. 2% is less than 7.4%.
Other than that, just plugging along.

I normally don't believe/discuss Murphy but between 2 vehicles we are looking at $1000 in maintenance/repairs in the last month. Frustrating. In addition, most of the repairs were on our primary car that we drive when we go "to town" an hr away, which is at least 2-3 times a week. So while our gas saving car is in the shop creating bills, we are driving the truck ($$$) or the Jeep($$) to town. Double whammy. This week MO went to town Monday for softball, I go to town Tuesday for softball, Wed for nail apt, Thurs for hair apt (I am getting beautified for Vegas vaca, these are not normal apts), and then Saturday and Sunday for softball tourney. So 6 out of the 7 days I need to drive an hr there and an hr back, car is not done at the shop yet, so I will be driving the Jeep. If I didn't have to come back home to work I would just stay down there all week. As is, I work from home, but we have an office in the town I have to drive to, so I am going to try to stay with a friend Wed night, work from the office Thursday, go to hair apt then come home. And we should also be able to stay Saturday night to Sunday for the softball tourney, so at least that will reduce 2 drives (4 hrs). But it's still a ton of gas money. In the long run $1000 would only be a few months of car payments if we bought new vehicles, so it really isn't that bad, but I am so ready to be done with this car repair revolving door!

bankergurl you are doing an AMAZING job on your debt-reduction journey, so please, try not to sweat it. Just a couple of thoughts: - Is it worth keeping up three vehicles? Might it be worth either selling one (and having two vehicles), or selling two (and buying something more recent) with the proceeds? Just a thought. - Could you not get a good haircut/manicure anywhere closer (of course I don't know where you live)? It's not even the money, it's the time: I would just hate to have to drive 2h for that. But really, don't sweat it, you're doing an AWESOME job!

debthaven - Thanks for the support! We actually have 4 vehicles. We have 2 "beater" cars, a 1997 Cavalier and a 2002 Malibu. We each had a car when we got married, they are worth way more to us then they would be to sell. So we took the insurance off of the Cavalier, parked it in the back of the garage, and will use it when the Malibu dies. The Malibu is our daily use car that we use to drive to town, an hr away, and MO uses for work, 5 mins away. I work from home, so most days I don't drive unless we have something going on, which is frequently in the summer. We also have an old truck, we need a truck as we do a lot of hauling for rentals and we also have 2 old boats that we take to the lake. Then lastly we have a Jeep that we bought last year to have a nicer vehicle for when we have both of us and the puppies, and the softball equipment, etc. We needed a vehicle that could fit everyone and everything and we got a good deal. The plan has always been that when the Malibu dies we would let it go and then bring the Cavalier out and have that for the daily use vehicle, we certainly don't need 4 vehicles, there was just no reason to sell a vehicle that has a lot of use to us, but wouldn't get more then a few hundred to sell. I though the Malibu was being taken in for $100-$300 in repairs. I was NOT happy when I found out it was $600, and then a week later it was back in again and we haven't gotten the bill yet on that repair. Had I known that it was going to be so much we would have had to have a serious talk about letting it go. Now the repairs are done so it's too late, but I suppose next time there is an issue we will have to be done. I only paid $4000 for the Malibu in 2008, and it's been driven pretty much every single day, so over 9 years of life out of a $4000 car, I couldn't be happier with that!

Update to Race #1, 2, 3 and 4!$1033.76 paid off in the last 2 weeks!!! Just keeping trucking here! As you see above we are dealing with car repairs so savings will be going done a bit. We are also in that pre-vacation stage where you feel like you don't have time for anything and we are spending too much money on eating out for convenience. I am still doing good on the weight loss though, down 16lbs and trying to reach 18 down before we leave for Vegas next week. We are both big gamblers (weird I know since I am so into savings/debt paydown ), but it's what we like to do for fun so depending on how Vegas goes will give us an outlook on the rest of the years paydown. We are cruising towards getting under $500K and I can't wait! Celebrations for this update:
-$1033.76 paid off in the last 2 weeks! -Race #1 went under the next $1000 mark! -Race #4 went under the next $1000 mark! -Total debt went under the next $1000 mark for the 3rd update in a row! -Payoff on Race #3 passed $35K!

TheHaitian : 7/22/17 -> $731,954.59 (6/1/17 -> $738,805.91) Holla folks look who is back! We, or should I say I took a break from tracking our finances closely because we had so many things we were juggling that we took the easy way out on many things : grocery shop + grocery deliveries (at a fee), someone maintaining our lawn ($40/every 2 weeks), eating out more often than we should, charging expenses that we could have planned for, etc. Yes we took our eyes off the prize a bit and while my heart stopped when I finally added the numbers a couple of days ago, and I was tempted not posting them or coming back... I don't regret it. I needed to take a few things off my plate to deal with a new baby, an asshole of a boss that made my work life stressful (and was tempted to quit). My wife is back to work now and also job hunting (2 interviews the past 2 weeks) so I am back to tracking our finances and getting things moving to pay down this debt. Will not be easy (never expected it to) but need to keep our eyes on the prize moving forward. Also I am starting fresh and I changed our format for debt payment if that is ok with everyone. I used some of our savings to pay down our debt a bit when I saw the amount in July; so don't expect that kind of paydown month to month ... being 3/4 of million dollars in debt is not for the faint of heart! . @thehaitian, the best way to get out is to start and keep going. It looks like that's your plan, so you've made a good start!
