My uncle is having a garage sale this weekend. I figured I'd see if I could get any money out of my kids' old clothes. I went through closets and so far I have 4 trash bags full. We're not talking cheap stuff either! And I'm not done with it all either! I still have clothes all over my living room to put prices on. Granted, I am a bargain shopper so it was all bought off season in a size bigger than they wore at the time or 30-50% off clearance with free shipping etc. , but really?! I never had this much designer stuff when I was younger! Damn kids!

Good luck on your sale. Don't know your tax situation but you might be better off financially to donate these clothes to a shelter and getting a tax write-off.
When DD was growing up I spent a lot of time in thrift stores. One Christmas when grand-daughter was about 8 I was in JC Penny looking for an outfit for her. Saw a really cute pair of pants for $35 that I refused to buy. She would outgrow it in 3 months.
I love my kids ........ but need to be careful with funds.

My kids never had designer clothes. Except for the youngest, and that was only because I had a friend who would buy her kids designer clothes every school year and give them to me at the end of the year for my son who was about 1 year behind her son in growth and same body type. So for several years I would get a bag with 6 pairs of nice Levi jeans plus ~10 shirts.

I am shocked at how much better my kids have it in life than I did. Hopefully, that trend will continue.

My kids have almost all designer clothes. I don't really care about the label, but I find amazing resell deals and have never spent more than $5 for an outfit. I can't beat that at Walmart. My latest score was 12 zackali4kids knitted outfits for the baby. I had no familiarity with that label and no idea they were $100 outfits when I was low-balling the seller. I got them for $2/each- new with tags. I just thought they were cute and didn't want the baby to look like her sister in every single picture I took because all she had was hand me downs. It wasn't until I got home and my husband said "more clothes?, I told him they were really nice and probably cost a lot more. He looked up the label and asked me why I didn't buy them all so we could resell them for more. I watched his pupils turn to $. Um, no- I have a full time job and it's not selling stuff.

I worked at an outlet for a designer clothing brand for a while. Bulk buyers would come in when there was a sale with coupon in hand and buy as much as they were allowed. We only let them buy 5 of each item so they didn't clean the place out. I would love to know how much they made on it!

I practically clothed them when they were little. Not anymore since they are all older and have pretty much stopped growing.

My boys are 2 yrs 2 months apart. When they we younger (less than 8 and 6), the youngest LOVED hand-me-downs. It was like younger was taking older DS's clothes (in his mind anyway).
When they were a little bit older, they changed body types, DS1 was super skinny and DS2 was average to a bit muscular, and for a long time they weighed about the same weight and there were no hand-me downs. About high school, younger DS passed older DS in weight and height, and in when they were in college, we actually had some "hand-me-ups".

She was always bigger than me even tough I am older.

Try having the only girl in 7 generations. I never bought her clothes until after the divorce. When I sold my baby stuff, a consignment shopper bought the whole tables full of her stuff.

Are you exaggerating the 7 generations part? That would mean the last girl was born during the Revolutionary War more or less. That would be great-great-great-great grandparents.

So I was told. The joke was "our last name don't breed women, they marry them ". She's the only female cousin and two of her male cousins have one boy each so it's another generation started again. I know there's none in 4 because I've seen pics I've met 3 generations.

They are now 12 & 16. #2 is now the same height as #1. There is lots of sharing and a few hand-me-ups have happened also. I donate everything to goodwill also. I don't have time for garage sales. This year-to-date, we've donated clothes that we paid $3,100 for that have a write-off of $1,313. For 2013, the total was $3,365 that we paid for that was a $1730 write-off.

My kids are still little. So I send all my clothes off to friends. Most of my boys clothes go to a childhood friend. Right now, most of girls clothes go to midjd. I think her DD is probably getting big enough that it might not work to pass things down to her. Almost everything I buy is consignment sale or hand-me-downs. So I don't bother trying to sell them.

I buy everything new but at a huge discount. I have a complex (one of many) about wearing used clothing. If it's something that is a hand me down from someone I know, it's fine. But I never shop garage sales or consignment. I do however have my name on the free mailing lists of any store the girls and I like and rarely shop without a coupon.

So what exactly is designer according to this thread? I consider Levi to be middle of the road jeans.
When I think designer jeans I think 7forallmankind jeans.
Depending on how we're ranking designer either my kid is a spoiled fashionista because very few of her clothes say Granimals on them or she's way behind the 8 ball and doomed to be a social pariah. Time to save for therapy.

I agree with the post about donating. Although if its someone else's yard sale I suppose it wouldn't be as bad to participate in. I know yard sales can work quite well depending on what you are selling.
