I went to the grocery store for lunch today. They have a decent salad bar there. As I am finishing making my salad this bent over old guy, probably 70 or so, comes up and looks over the salad bar and then grabs a cucumber slice with his filthy fingers and snacks on it. Then he hobbles over the the olive bar and picks out an olive with the same nasty fingers and pops that into his mouth. Oops, that one has a pit. What does he do with the pit? He put it into a basket of chocolates for sale. Then I see him with his crotchety looking old wife and he is chewing on something else. Old people are disgusting.

Probably their daily free meal. A trip to the store to wander about grazing & sampling.

One of the reasons I don't often eat at salad bars. I remember when the big bulk bins became popular & you'd see people grazing out of them all the time.

LOL!! Is this, perhaps, "payback" for the screaming kids thread? Not payback. It just was coincidence and normally I wouldn't have thought much about it, but the screaming kid thread had me thinking of the way other people act, so I thought I'd start a thread.

I'm back in the hospital with DF. They have a salad bar. Flies all over the food. I pointed that out to the employee in back quite a few times because he didnt acknowledge what I was saying. It's a HOSPITAL CAFETERIA for Pete's sake. Hand sanitizers everywhere but flies on your food? He pretended to either not understand English or that he couldn't hear me. But several others did. I asked to speak to manager who seemed to not be able to be found. I happen to know who she is though so I will catch her next time.

I asked my mother the other day exactly what age one reaches where it's acceptable to be rude. She says the most rude things sometimes to just whomever will listen. She's not getting dementia or anything. She just doesn't give a crap what anybody thinks anymore. She gave me the "I'm going to smack the crap out of you" look so I didn't pursue it further.

That is so gross!
Another thing I hate is when people put their bare feet in the shoes at the shoe store! I don't wanna take anyone else's foot fungus home! Use one of those sock thingys they have next to the damn shoes!

I am more disgusted with kids. Went to the buffet one time a few years back and there was a mutant grade schooler, unaccompanied, eating pudding right out of the serving container. Several workers passed her and did nothing. I have not gone back there.
Hey, if they provided tooth picks, I would have used one for the olive and the cucumber. When confronted, I play the senile card.

I've seen more than just old people do it. Teenages, homeless adults. I stopped eating from salad bars years ago when I witnessed a guy going up and using the spoons in the containers to eat with. Then dropping the spoon back in the container. The restaurant staff came out and replaced the spoons.

Every time I hear somebody hock a loogie and blow their nose at the dinner table, it's an old person. Every.single.time....disgusting.

Has anyone else noticed how mean to one another an old couple can be? The only reason I'm asking is because there have been two incidents lately where I was stunned at how they treated one another. The first was at a restaurant - not an upscale one but not McD's either. She LOUDLY told him she wasn't in the mood to repeat "every damn thing" to him. He was obviously very hard of hearing and was asking her to repeat what the waitress said. I was sitting in a booth right next to their table and I was stunned.
The other incident was in the grocery store. He was trying to help sort through the coupons and she was impatient with him because he couldn't find what she wanted and told him quite loudly to "get out of my way" and "I'll get it myself". She then pushed into him with her shopping cart.
I felt like crying. I gotta get tough.

Any buffets are subject to people, usually kids, eating directly out of the bowl. Even with the sneeze guards, I don't like buffets.
They are set up too early to keep the salad dressings cold all day. Usually the hot foods do look hot.
That is one food source to avoid.
Those self-serve cookie bins with the tongs, ick.
On hearing. The older people who can't hear even with hearing aids are usually embarrassed to keep asking what. If you know they cannot hear, get close so they can.
I was disgusted with some relatives on how they talked to their late elderly Dad sitting right there. It was down right verbal abuse. I told him I'd stand up for him but he said it's okay. It didn't bother him.
I posted on this board one of their loud mouthed sessions, which they read; and it came back to me a few years later. Target hit the first time.

You, and you, and you, and you too (Archie) will someday be one of those disgusting old people if nature has its say.
In the mean time, stop those budding bad habits you currently have which polite people have simply yet to point out to you.

Add old age to that and you now have an old person taking care of an old person. It's physically, mentally, and emotionally exhausting. When me or anyone I know get tired, we get cranky. Just like little kids do. I empathize more now than I ever did. Her life is probably hell. Never ending hell.

Just like little kids do. I empathize more now than I ever did. Her life is probably hell. Never ending hell. I understand. My mother took care of my father for a long time before he died. Still....doesn't make it ok to make his life a living hell, too. He didn't ask to be sick. And that poor man didn't ask to be hard of hearing. It's mean and if I ever get that way, I hope someone speaks up. Chances are, in a relationship, one of the two is going to end up looking after the other one at some point. It's part of the deal. I absolutely adore seniors. It hurts my heart to see them mistreated - especially by the person they should be able to count on more than anyone. I might eat my words someday - and that's already happened plenty of times - but I sure hope not.

I know. I'm able to scream inside my car or inside the house. I'm able, so far, to keep smiley face on in public. But in private, I lose it. Nazgul knows how tenuous the line is caregivers walk.

As an old person, when I hock a loogie, I let her fly. Hope you are not in the way. Yes, I do the senile thing if called on it. There are great advantages to age. When I started going gray in my late 40's, I would always go to the youngest clerk in the super market to check out. Of course, I shopped on senile citizen's day, and Bingo! He would give me the discount.

My grandpa used to hold one finger to one nostril, blow, then do the other the same way. Then he'd use his hanky to wipe it. If grandma had caught him, he'd have been toast!

I can't wait to be old and crotchety.
Right now, I'm only half of that combo.
