So DH and I have two multi-unit rental properties. Six weeks ago we had a plumbing issue in one of the units (main sewer clogged) and the plumber (whom I trust) told me the tenants couldn't use ANY water, no showers, flushing, doing dishes etc for 24 hours to give the water a chance to drain so they could get in and rod/route out the line. So - we can't very well expect them to hold it. The units were uninhabitable. We contacted a local motel and arranged for a discounted rate and paid for a hotel room for the tenants for two nights (two families). Fast forward to 5 weeks later. We get a charge on our credit card for the same hotel. No, we did not send any more tenants there. Call the hotel and are told by the manager that someone walked in with our charge number written on a piece of paper and told them he was authorized to use our card. I'm calling bullshit on the story, we never gave the number to the tennants, only to the hotel manager. AND what kind of manager would run through a charge under circumstances like that? In the meantime, we've had to call the credit card and report a fradulent charge. Which means the card is cancelled. Again. Now I have to transfer all the autopay items and reset everything in Quicken, again. I'm going to the hotel in person tomorrow to open up a can of *bitch* all over the manager. I'd call the police but am pretty sure they won't bother with a petty crime like this. GRRRR! Anything else I can do?

I had a fraud charge this weekend. Citi let the $850 plane ticket go through, but declined the $11 internet charge...go figure. Both charges were made in Belgium.
This is the 3rd time we've had a card # stolen. I have one card I use for all my auto pays and a list of them on my computer. I don't use it for anything else.
They overnighted me the new card. It seems like the stolen numbers come from me swiping the card (home depot) than the auto pays. I use a different card for all my day to day expenses.

I am surprised that the motel didn't credit the charges card back. Must be a shady motel. (is there any other kind?)

DH call and spoke/left message with them three times. No call back. He finally didn't give his name when he called and the clerk got the manager on the line. We think the manager is doing something shady and want to call him out to the owner.

Get a different card. For as much as I hate B of A, I have their credit card. They have a safeshop feature that allows you to create a fake card number to give out. I use it for online purchases and if I have to give a number over the phone. It's only good for one vendor and only for the amount you set it up for.
I would call the manager and ask for the record of who used it. They should still have registration information, even if the charge was on your card. If they used your name, then I would be trying to get them for fraud/ id theft.

The CaptainI think it was nice of you to put them up in another location over night. I've lived places that wouldn't have. I hope things go well for you. (Get the bum! )

.
Like probably housing some of his deadbeat friends or family on yours (and other people's) dime.
I'd be raising major sh*t if that happened to me. The only way I can see your CC # being compromised and used this way, is by a motel employee who had access to that number.

The Captain, I'm really sorry you're going through this. We had the same scenario happen earlier this year, right down to the fraudulent hotel charge. We had been in Florida for (only) a week, had four credit cards compromised with charges all the way to England and Kazakhstan ( I can't remember the last time we visited Kazakhstan ! ), plus Texas and Florida. We still had all of our cc's with us. The charges rolled in for 4 months.
The fakey room charge was a local motel. DH had stayed there for a week the prior year because we had spotted the crazy former attorney who used to sue him all of the time near our neighborhood. That was damned scary. She never sent anybody over to serve him and never turned up at our house, so that blew over. Over a year later, we got a room charge on the same card from the same motel. However, he hadn't stayed there that night. A desk clerk must have used it for a buddy.
We spent a lot of time straightening it all out with various cc companies. This year, we're going to use cash most of the time in FL. Doing this should prevent a lot of security breaches.

Aren't there card readers or something out there now, that can get your card number, while it's still in your wallet or purse? I know I've seen ads for special wallets or inserts to protect you from others being able to do it. Were these people not taught to be honest, when they were young? Jeez!

Many moons ago, I worked as a cashier in a hardware store. A customer had several hundreds of dollars worth of merchandise and wanted to charge it to a credit card number that was printed on a receipt he handed me (back then, the entire # was printed on receipts instead of just the last 4 digits as is common today). I told him I couldn't do that, he had to have the actual card, but the customer insisted. I called a manager over and was shocked when he told me to type the number off the receipt and run the transaction. I refused to do it and told him to do it. I was only working PT to get out of the house since I was a SAHM, so I didn't care if he fired me over refusing to do what he told me. That could've been a receipt that I or anyone else had dropped.
Sorry that happened to you Captain. I would report it, in the the hopes that if the motel manager is doing this to customers, he gets caught.

The way people treat you, is a statement about who they are as a human being. It is not a statement about you. ~♥~
Thank you for your quote, tmr.

Lol, thought you were screaming at me! you will need a police report for your credit card company if the amount is over $1000.00 sorry to hear that captain. I'm not sure this is necessarily true in all cases anymore. Stolen card numbers is quite common now. My credit card number was stolen. Someone tried to spend $1500 in Frye's. Amex/BA declined the charge sent me some paper work. They issued me a new card. I don't know if it's because there is no Frye's anywhere near me and I was at home spending at the same time. I don't think I'm part of the Home Depot fiasco, but if I am, that means another new card. Sheesh. One benefit for me, is I don't do autopay. Whew.

Some credit cards have identity theft protection .... As well as some people. since loss has to exceed $1000.00 or more to be consider identity theft I suggested the police report. At least the last time I had to look , damages had to be above 1000.00.
I notified the bank who notified the FBI . Interesting story.

If you have time, file reports with BBB (Better Business Bureau) and Yelp.com
