Well, that's probably amount her reason it would all be frozen foods. I've known people who are 'different levels' of kosher though. I have friends who won't eat a certain Mark. But will others. So I don't think all kosher is created equal. Maybe. Someone mentioned vegan... Can prisoners request vegan/ vegetarian? Yes, they can. But that's not just removing animal protein. That's making sure no animal products are used in any preparation, if you are looking at a vegan diet. And even with separate kitchens in jails and prisons, there is no way to ensure that the kosher kitchen is kept that way, unless you lock it up securely when not in use, and pay for a rabbi to supervise it when it is in use. Plus have cooks trained in the art/science of kosher cooking. Since most correctional facilities employ inmates in the kitchen, I'm thinking the likelihood of in-house kosher kitchens actually working is almost none, though a few prisons in NY, TX and IN have started operating them. They use on-site and video monitoring, and train long-term inmates in how to prepare and cook kosher food. It's not cheap, but the correctional administration probably figures it's cheaper than fighting court lawsuits over the meals.

Let me tell you all a little "secret". For that guy to keep kosher, the prison would need to have an entirely different kitchen. The laws of Kashrut are VERY strict. To have a truly Kosher food - the food, the plates, the pots and pans and utensils can not come into ANY contact with regular food, plates, pots and pans and utensils bc if they do - it won't be Kosher. So, even if all he ate were produce and bread, which will NEVER happen as I am sure there will be a whole other discussion on the proper nutrition - there are still issues with other things. So, let's have a show of hands - who would like to start paying for separate kitchens in prison? And an entirely different menu? Anyone ?? Oh and one more thing - people who only eat Kosher food take it very seriously. If this guy has been in prison for more than a day and only now is voicing his desires....well, "we" don't even have to judge his "religiousness", he already showed that it's not that important It's hilarious that some of you are taking it much more seriously than he is. What is NOT hilarious is the fact how easily people can get away with all kinds of things bc there are always some bleeding hearts who take them seriously. A separate pile of paper plates, plastic forks and spoons (no knives of course), along with a dedicated $50 microwave from Walmart to heat up the kosher hot dogs. Fixed.

So I am guessing you will put him on a strict diet of produce and bread, correct? Bc otherwise you will need two more separate refrigerators for meat and dairy. I am also assuming that during certain times of year you will be providing very specific foods. And of course, changing that microwave as well, bc again, there are very specific rules on what you are allowed to do during Passover, for example I am also assuming that there will be a Rabbi coming and inspecting it all, bc again, otherwise it will not be considered Kosher.

The point I was trying to make is that sure, we can certainly be all humane and provide dear prisoners with the diets they want and ensure all kinds of personal freedoms for them, but it's going to cost extra. And unlike some people think, it will cost a lot extra.
So, how much extra are people willing to pay for someone who broke our laws and hurt other people?
I guess based on this thread, people are willing to go great lengths to satisfy freedoms of those who disregard our laws.
I certainly wouldn't do any of that and I certainly wouldn't want to pay for any of that. But I am very often in the minority, so I am used to it.

. Well, he should have thought of that before committing murder. The majority of inmates aren't being granted special meals or privileges.
He should have thought of his sudden devout religious practices before committing murder. He'd been there a while before making these demands. So my belief that he's a strict follower of his faith, is very slim.
I have no sympathy with him having to make certain adjustments due to his current living accommodations. That's part of the price you pay when you commit a felony such as murder and wind up in the slammer.
He could always convert.

How about just tap water or will you find a way to include a rabbi to bless the water pipes too. The reality is, I do not care what he eats.

Actually many prisons don't use anything but paper or styrofoam plates and plastic "sporks". Since they're new, they're acceptable for Kosher. He could have his Kosher hot dogs warmed in a separate microwave. As long as he's not served food that the others prisoners get from the boxes labeled "Not Intended for Human Consumption", he'll be ok.

“Inmates have a lot of paranoia about what they are being fed,” said Gary Friedman, a chaplain who is chairman of Jewish Prisoner Services International and has dealt with the issue of kosher prison meals for more than two decades. “About how the food could be adulterated, how the prison uses out-of-date products, how they use things that don’t meet U.S.D.A. standards, how sex offenders may be handling their food.” “If they are using prepackaged, sealed meals, the inmates believe they are safer,” he said. The article that excerpt was taken from talks about some of the pros and cons. www.nytimes.com/2014/01/21/us/you-dont-have-to-be-jewish-to-love-a-kosher-prison-meal.html?_r=0

I saw your post and her response after I posted. Well, the prison that DH and I volunteer does not have a Rabbi on staff or on the volunteer chaplain roster. So no, there won't be any Rabbi supervision. Serving frozen dinners made in a Kosher off-site facility and warmed in a separate microwave should satisfy the inmate. Don't expect the prison to buy another microwave and reserve it for Passover. Different people have different ideas of what is acceptable and what isn't. I lived in a dorm with a Rabbi's wife who refused to use the oven but used the communal microwave after wiping it with a paper towel.

Your previous post indicated that you found a great solution for this issue, so I simply responded that yes, it might be a solution, but it will cost more money and will have various logistical issues. When a person tries to come up with a solution it usually indicates at least some minor form of care.

OK, I have no idea who is arguing what, so I'll say this and then I am out
I never said it can't be done, there are various way of providing Kosher meals to prisoners.
But it will be more expensive bc anytime you make anything "individual" when a large group of people is involved, it is more expensive. How much more expensive will depend on his requirements. And he can ramp up his requirements to the highest level.
I, personally, wouldn't want to pay for any kind of increased prisoners' cost, but that's just me.
