I don't care what kind of lane they have, just get these people out of my way!!! And the first one who doesn't pay for their groceries within 15 seconds of hearing the total gets their food taken away.

How about having more than 2 lanes open for check-out? Why have 12-20 lanes installed if the stores aren't going to use them?

Grocery stores should have check-out lanes for working people that pay for their own groceries. We don't care where the money comes from : as long as WE get paid for the groceries all is good. We actually saw a significant drop in sales as a chain since they made cuts to the SNAP program

They get so intent on their conversation they take considerably more than 15 seconds.
Its the equivalent of the old lady counting out coins or not getting her checkbook out until the total is rung up.

Grocery stores should have check-out lanes for working people that pay for their own groceries. No way! I want my grocery store to add a lane where someone else pays for my groceries! That sounds way better! Never gonna happen but you are more than welcome to bring your sugar daddy with you: he will pay!

The only thing this does is cater to your feeling of superiority. It won't make it any quicker.

It is annoying when they totally forgot that they will need to pay for all the shit they just rang up and take an additional 10 minutes to look for the right card. They past like 10 credit cards but no... They need the right one that they cannot seem to find. I am right yet with you partner and screaming inside while smiling.

Or are you looking for a shaming check-out line? Writing a check takes far longer than swiping a card. You can swipe the card, enter your pin if debit, and be done within seconds after the cashier hits total. I can't stand being behind someone who acts surprised that (usually a woman) that she has to pay for the stuff, then spends a ridiculous amount of time digging in her handbag looking for the checkbook. Then it takes another 60 seconds to write the check, and more time for the cashier to process it.
Maybe a lane for cash/debit/credit card only and another for people who write checks. Yes, that's the ticket...

When it comes to cards versus EBT it depends sometimes on the cashier and how they set up EBT on their system.
Recently at ShopRite I witnessed perhaps the longest debit transaction ever. Apparently the couple must have changed cards recently and she couldn't remember the new number or PIN. Unfortunately instead of being in the checkout with her, hubby was back in the store about 20 ft from the register, 30 ft. from her. Took several minutes as she went to him and came back. *Sigh*

Not in our stores... All you need to do is sign the Check and hand it over to the cashier. We process it and give it right back to you. Take as same time as if you were paying with cash or card. Just have a signed check ready to go!

I usually have my card swiped long before the cashier finishes ringing me up. I hate waiting around and am not going to be the one slowing things down.

Blonde Granny -I agree with you. My worst experience was being behind a woman who did not even reach for the checkbook out of her handbag until her goods had been rung up. After she had written her check and the cashier had given her her recipt, she decided to balance her checkbook while still standing in front of the cashier. Then her friggin cell phone rang and she decided to take the call while still standing in front of the cashier. She kept on friggin talking on the cell phone not getting out of the way. So I lightly bumped her cart with mine and she gave me the stink eye. I gave her a smellier stink eye back.

I got behind her sister a couple of weeks ago, she wasn't on the phone, she was trying to make up all kinds of sales at other stores. (Yeah, I was shopping at Walmart) I think she had a month's worth of old sales fliers printed out. The cashier went with the first couple then started asking for proof and looking every one of them up in her own fliers. Funny how many things the lady ended up not getting.

I think if the line is 3 deep or more, they need to open another register.
Another pet peeve is when there's a line, & they're pushing the store credit card. Last time I was in the store, the woman in front of me decided to sign up for it, & I got a nice long wait while they processed her new card. Would've ditched to a different register, if the lines had been shorter.

I got stuck behind a couple at Sam's once that used FIVE different credit cards to pay for their stuff. Three ended up freezing the computer. How bad are your finances that you have to swipe five different cards to pay for your groceries?

In defense of the cashier though, I had one store manage at Belk Dept. store berate my sales lady for the dress she had on while helping me. I promptly came home and contacted Belk and complained.

There are no self-serve lines in my one-grocery store hick town. (When I do journey to a metropolitan area, those self serve lines do not cooperate with me either.)

Wal-mart had self check-outs for awhile. I didn't mind them if they were used as intended but I ALWAYS got stuck behind someone with three carts of food, half of which did not have bar codes. Then they couldn't figure out how to ring their crap up so the red light would start spinning and a clerk would have to come over and scan everything. Which totally defeats the purpose of self check-out. I ended up using regular lanes and got out faster because everyone else was stuck at the self check lanes.

Are there any other reasons you feel entitled to more than other shoppers beside the fact you have places to be?

Then my only other "helpful" suggestion is to shop really early, as I assume your one-grocery store hick town is like my two-grocery store hick town and they close fairly early or are stocking during the final hour open.

I always swipe my credit card and my MVP card before the total even comes up. All I have to do is click yes with the total comes up. Stores in my area don't even require a signature anymore. I don't know how anything can be faster than that.

That's most people, although how soon and quickly depends on when they shop. Just an FYI, a good portion of people on SNAP work. I'm doing some quick grocery shopping soon and work a short shift tonight. Until I get a full time job from one of my interviews, I'll be on SNAP since I qualify. One former volunteer I know will be down to $16/mo. on SNAP as he barely qualifies with his 35-37 hours a week average in the job he has now.
