Are teachers more hesitant to teach at a private high school? Is that why he thinks there is a shortage?
Could be- compensation is a lot lower, from what they told me at my son's private school. That was also my understanding at my Roman Catholic HS. Teachers go to those places to get experience, our out of a sense of commitment to the central purpose of the school (many have higher-earning spouses), or to escape some of the public school BS. (Private schools may be much less hesitant to throw someone out if they don't want to be there. Why let a kid with disciplinary issues disrupt things and maybe motivate the parents of the other kids to take them elsewhere?) It's a tradeoff of money vs. the benefits of teaching in a different environment.

It's a tradeoff of money vs. the benefits of teaching in a different environment. I taught at the private school that my own kids attended. I earned half of what I made when I switched to a public school job and received zero benefits (except for half-tuition). I was on the Personnel Committee before I began teaching there because DH was chairperson of the board, and we struggled to get even mediocre teachers in fields like math. The math teacher got much closer to the public school salary.
The good teachers in the school had kids in the school. The rest were just gaining experience and would leave in mid-year if they could get a public school teaching position. No one blamed them. How could anyone live on $18,000 a year even in 1999 with no benefits? You couldn't.

I know people who did work for private schools at low salaries but they had a spouse that made a decent salary and they got free tuition for their children which at that point in time added up to 21k a year on top of her 14k salary.

I will mention this to my friend next time I see him. I honestly have no idea what the difference in compensation is in our city between the teachers at the Catholic HS and the teachers across town at the public HS. I will definitely ask him and mention that if there is a large pay difference that that could be contributing to his "shortage" perception.

I think that depends on who is accrediting the private school. The one I taught at required you have current certification.

In my city, private school teachers get paid far less than public school teachers which kills any argument that state employees make lower salaries than private employees with the same or similar job. 5 years in, but friend is only making 23K/year as a teacher at a private school. She has a masters from Chapel Hill and will start another masters program in the fall. Teachers in the public system make at least 40k starting out in my city, which is MCOL. My friend also teaches 12 months and gets only 3 weeks vacation because that's how the school is set up since it's not tied to the 180 classroom days rule. I was a corporate trainer (again similar job, but 12 months and 8 hour/5-day week class time, plus preping lectures, plus grading, plus meetings after class, plus no overtime and only 3 weeks vacation, plus travel= 60+ hour work weeks). I made 23K/year and it was my first job out of college. After 5 years, I made 45K. I don't want to teach school, so no need to tell me to go be a teacher if it's so good, but I was tempted when I was working those hours for that salary. Regardless, I moved on from corporate training and have a better salary these days.

Ok.... MPL they've all said it better than I can but I'll say it again... DON'T let him scare you with court threats. My ex did the same to me, but he was too busy drinking to be bothered. I still have custody and about 5 months until the kid is 18, he was 4ish when we split. You will never be able to control what happens when your child is outside your presence, whether he's with his father, at school or with friends when he's older. Start getting used to it and over it. Can we back up, though? Which cousin of Carl's went to any early grave?? One we hear about regularly? Did I miss something? Chocolate cheesecake lover, did you accidentally post that here? It seems more like a response to the Intervention thread. If you posted it in the wrong thread, you might ask a moderator to move it for you. Yep, wrong thread. Sheesh, I can't get anything right lately. And it's all goofy little crap like this. <<sigh>> Yes, would a mod please move this to MPL's thread which I thought I was in. Please and thank you. ETA: Never mind, I just copied and pasted it.

I know a woman with an English teaching degree and she can't land a job for anything! I decided she must be a terrible interviewer. She has been looking for five years now!

That could be it. Seriously interviewing in eduction can be complicated both by some really weird questions and the need to 'teach a model lesson' which is almost like acting...

I had to teach a model lesson to those interviewing me (ie a panel of teachers/admin) at two different interviews. I was offered both jobs. It wasn't a part of every interview I've been on though.
However, I don't know any other professional, besides a teacher, who has been asked things like what Disney character they identify with...

There are kooks everywhere. I remember a conversation with a bunch of sys admins at my previous job about the weirdest interview question we'd ever been asked. There were some pretty weird things that came up. The only one I remember was a guy that got asked which Lords of the Rings character was his favorite.
